Which Alpha Flight character(s) do you think had the most wasted potential and how would you fix it?
Oh dear this has been languishing in my inbox for a while. Sorry
And if I say all of them?
Ok not *all* per se but Alpha Flight is uniquely good at fumbling interesting characters (not quite as good as the X-Men tho). However, if I had to twist my own arm and say who has the most wasted potential… in no particular order:
1. Witchfire. I maintain Witchfire is the coolest name for anything I have ever heard ever, and so I think she deserved the chance to be cool as well. Her real name, Ananym, is also very cool. Idk Alpha Flight never really got around to properly developing her and I feel like she was wasted as a one time x-men villain. However, with Limbo under new leadership (Madelyne Pryor my beloved), it would be interesting for her to appear again, either as an antagonist (for context, Witchfire is Belasco’s daughter and has made claims on Limbo’s throne before) or in another role. I’d like to know what circumstances led to her switch from hero to villain, why she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps, is this something she’s doing by choice or does he have some influence over her etc. I think her and Maddie could get on well as allies. I also need her to get another redesign bc the last one they gave her was doing to much (marvel let me do it)
2. All the new characters from Alpha Flight 1997 (Jared & Adrian Corbo, Arlette Truffaut, Lilli Stephens, Manbot). Lumping them all together because I did make a very lengthy post about them recently but like. They’re so interesting, their origins are so intriguing and fucked up, I want to see their story finished and done justice.
3. Pathway (Laura Dean) and Goblyn. In terms of mutation and ‘the mutant metaphor’ I think these twins are really interesting- they’re both mutants but Laura’s mutation manifests later while Goblyn is very visibly a mutant from birth. Their parents keep Laura and reject Goblyn, they don’t even give her a name, but that’s not to say Laura got away free. She grew up knowing her parents hated mutants and then turned out to be one herself and lost her home. And they’re tiny, like they’re clearly so young and they wind up as superheroes because there’s nothing else. Bottom line they deserve better. Also they’re both really sweet and Laura’s powers are cool, so I’d like to see marvel at least remember they exist
But like…all of them. Alpha Flight has rarely once realised the true potential of a character, and even if they do that progress will be reversed after that run is cancelled and rebooted in 5 years.
Sorting the moldering bones in the goblyn Caverns of the Dead (Ravenloft supplement Castles Forlorn, TSR, 1993; interior art is credited broadly to Stephen Fabian, Arnie Swekel, and Robert Klasnich -- I think this one looks like Swekel's)
Persuasion, Cat Elves, Riding Cats, and Demon were introduced in Alpha Flight 81, cover date Febuary, 1990. They were created by James Hudnall and John Calimee. The issue retcons Northstar and Aurora's origins. ("The Quest for Northstar Pt 1" Alpha Flight 81, Marvel Comic Event)
Laura Dean is such a funny character. 8 year old mutant high support needs autistic child and her demon twin sister have gotten adopted by the world's worst group of Canadians, and she gets really close with a purple teenager who is the Purple Man's daughter and a transgender woman who turns into big furry beast because her parents are mutantphobic and hate her demon twin sister and also she can open portals to other dimensions but this is never really explained. Don't worry about it.
Do you know these twins? (Laura Dean and Goblyn)
Yes, I know them well
I know where they're from, but not much else about them
I don't know, but they seem familiar
Never heard of them
Cover art still so much better than the inside art... sigh...
