Change.org.is coming to the UK. Does that tick your box?

To celebrate it's 10 millionth member to it's online petitioning site, change.org put together this info-graphic. Does Change.org tick the right boxes for you?

Change.org the online petitioning site that now has 14 million users, 500,000 of which are in the UK is just about to open a UK branch as part of it's global roll out. Change.org states that it is a US certified B Corporation 'using the power of business for social good'. It makes money by charging organisations such as Oxfam and The Humane Society a fee to target their campaigns at what it believes will be sympathetic users who are not already on their list of supporters.

Change.org gives those who want to start a petition a free and easy way to start a petition and make their voice heard by governments and business leaders all over the world. As well as providing a petition widget which can be posted on your blog or web site, Change.org also allows you to harness social media such as Twitter or use email to gain supporters for what you are trying to achieve and to stay in touch with them as the campaign develops. 

Change.org cites a number of high profile campaigns where they believe their petition made those in power take note and take action. While some are skeptical about Change.org and it's likely impact, they are not alone in trying to make the voice of individuals and groups more effective in holding those in positions of power to account. Others include Avaaz.org ,Sumofus.org , care2.com and 38degrees.org.uk

Have you heard about buzzbnk?  Crowdfunding for Charities and Social Entrepreneurs

Buzzbnk, a UK online crowd-funding platform supporting charities and social enterprises was awarded a £50,000 investment from the £10million Innovation in Giving Fund in February 2012. Created by the Cabinet Office and NESTA, the fund aims to find and back innovative ideas for increasing volunteering and charitable giving.

Buzzbnk is an on-line crowd-funding platform that brings social ventures looking for start-up or growth capital together with like minded people keen to fund them with small amounts of money. Social enterprises or charities can raise funding for a wide range of projects in a variety of ways, from offering fun and engaging benefits, in return for goods or services, or as a loan. It’s a whole new way to do good.

Buzzbnk is a social enterprise owned 63% by leading charities and foundations in the UK and has a social purpose mandate to support the social enterprise, social investment and charitable sector.

Buzzbnk was one of the first crowdfunding platforms to go live in the UK, there are others but Buzzbank state that it’s unique in that it specifically supports projects and organisations that have a ‘more-than-profit’ motive, be they social enterprises, cooperatives or charities. It is also unique because it is the only UK crowdfunding platform that can provide loans as well as straightforward donations.

Three quarters of the world’s poor do not have a bank account, not only because of poverty, but also because of the cost, travel distance, and amount of paper work involved in opening one, says the World Bank.

Those without access to formal banking often have to rely on money lenders who often charge high fees. The “unbanked” are also less likely to start their own business or insure themselves against unexpected events.

Democratising Education? - Free University Courses for those with internet access

Two Stanford University professors and a dream to educate the world, that’s what started Coursera. The service offers university-level courses to anyone with internet access for free and just raised $16 million from venture capitals to enable them to expand.

During a pilot run last year, one of the 3 courses offered at the time enrolled over 100,000 students from around the world. Coursera has now partnered with Stanford, Princeton, University of California at Berkeley, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania to bring professor-created classes online. The number of courses has now expanded to 30 with more to follow.

The internet continues to expand and sometimes dismantle the way education at all levels is currently delivered and shared. Coursera is a great example of  how those who don't have access to traditional university courses or find the costs of taking them unacceptably high can now get access to some of the world's leading educators in their field.

With increased internet access in the developing world and a growing thirst for education, such courses have the potential to be a lifeline to those who seek to educate themselves and then use their skills to help their communities. While the subject areas of those courses currently offered are still limited, having proved the model works, the scope to expand the courses available and have a hugely positive impact upon many peoples lives is great.
