Okay, I'm about to get really pissed, so you've been warned. I've noticed that the Gotham fandom is really hard on one character in specific: Lee Thompkins. Now, here's the thing... Lee is played by a veteran actress of the big and small screen, Morena Baccarin, and her performance on Gotham is excellent. I don't think anyone can deny this. Lee is one of the only female characters on the show to hold a college degree (along with Valerie Vale and most likely, Kristin Kringle), and not just any degree, but a doctorate. She's one of the best educated characters on the show, male or female. She's up there with Lucius Fox and Hugo Strange. She has a wide variety of skills, from administering treatment to lab work to counseling. She has meaningful and dynamic relationships with other characters on the show, like Kristen (while she was alive), Bruce and Alfred, Harvey, Ed (while he worked at the GCPD) and of course, Jim. She's a woman of color who kicks ass. She has shown tremendous courage, tenacity, and intelligence throughout the course of the show, all while looking pretty darn good doing it. Hell, she's a character from the comics, and her very presence on the show has allowed Gotham to make a number of easter egg moments. But people choose to ignore ALL of this because they don't like her romantic relationship with Jim. I'm not asking you to ship them, but I am asking everyone to GET OVER IT. I've heard "But Lee and Jim are so on-and-off/dysfunctional/hetero/whatever." Okay, that's your opinion. There may be some merit to that, even if I don't see it. You may find her subplot annoying-that's okay, there are other specific subplots that I don't like on Gotham. BUT TO DISMISS AN IMPRESSIVE FEMALE CHARACTER, ONE OF THE VARIETY THAT IS SORELY LACKING IN TELEVISION TODAY, SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE HER ROMANTIC PAIRING IS NARROW-MINDED. There are flaws and holes in Lee's story... But there are flaws and holes in every character's story. Gotham is not a perfect show. Hell, at least they didn't bring Lee BACK FROM THE DEAD. You're pissed because Lee is still in love with Jim? Well, I'm pissed that characters can suddenly come back from the beyond. If Gotham gets cancelled, it will be because of crazy moves like that, not because Leslie Thompkins isn't over Jim Gordon. The Batman mythos has a history of on-again, off-again romances. Bruce and Selina (which we've already seen on the show... If you hate pairings that are inconsistent, you'd better hate them, too), Joker and Harley, and now, Jim and Lee. It's not anything new that we're seeing here. To summarize, the dismissal of the highly-impressive Dr. Leslie Thompkins based purely on her relationship with Jim is both narrow-minded and offensive, and you're wasting your energy hating on a small subplot when you could be worried about the far more ridiculous direction that Gotham is heading. After all, in the real world, people fall in love with their exes again, but people sure as hell don't come back from the dead.
