When I was in high school in the early 2000s, some of my acquaintances were goths. And they enjoyed a very distinctive style of media (either comics or cartoons) - white skinned characters drawn in a cute/cartoony style, mostly black and white, but with spot colours in either red or pastels. There were a lot of striped socks. The characters never smiled. The vibes were horror-themed, but nobody would do anything active enough for there to actually BE any horror. Everyone just snarked in deadpan and fatalistic ways.
The only name I can remember from what I saw was Emily the Strange, but I think they were far more into something else.
Most of the Death/Sandman stuff was drawn more adult and scratchy. Things like Lenore and Squee! were much more ugly-cute, and also WAY more actively horrific. (Though I might just not have been shown anything gory.) And there weren’t enough frills or Japanese influence for it to be gothic lolita. This was a more conventional artstyle, but everyone was wearing skulls and romanticizing suicide.
Does anyone know of other examples of this style of media? I didn’t actually enjoy what I saw (though I remember the art being striking and pretty) but it HAS stuck with me for over 20 years. Fatalism and depression were much more beguiling to 14 year old me than they are to me as an adult, and I’d like to see it with an adult’s perspective.
