Spoilers for Nightwing #50/69 and Joker War
I was reminded of this during my re-read of Tom Taylor's Nightwing. But anyone else just a little annoyed so many people seemingly forgot Dick's amnesia and Ric Grayson wasn't from KGBeast?
I mean, yes, the bullet in his head definitely didn't help and it was the catalyst for essentially everything that happened after, but it wasn't the actual cause for his prolonged memory issues-- it was Dr. Isabella Haas, the doctor who had been treating his brain injury since Day 1 who oops was actually a member of the Court of Owls with access to a magical crystal that could warp someone's sense of identity (Nightwing #69). Yeah that might be important.
"I built a new you inside your mind, Richard." I don't know about you, but with an admission like that, it seems pretty clear to me who's responsible here.
But then I see so many comments like "I'll never forgive KGBeast for Ric Grayson" and ??? Literally the moment Dick gets a hold of that crystal and uses it, his memories return to him. This was 100% a Court of Owls thing. And I thought this misconception was only fandom at first, but Tom Taylor totally glosses over this too in Nightwing #91.
Hello? I know Joker War didn't get the best reception, but we're ignoring some pretty significant context here! And if you know Nightwing, then you know just how important he is to the Court of Owls. Gray Son of Gotham anyone? There was a whole prophecy about him. The Court has been after him for years. But yeah sure, let's just throw that away and put all the blame on KGBeast.
Why is DC letting someone come up with an ancient history for the name Grayson when it’s only been in Dick’s family for two three generations? 🤔 His great grandfather William Cobb came up with the name when he took his son from the mother, Amelia Crowns, to deliver to the circus as prime Talon material, if you remember. And I haven't read any comic that indicates that the Court of Owls story, and Dick’s gramps wanting him as a Talon, has been de-canonized.
Nightwing vol 3 # 9
Nightwing vol 4 # 111
Beware the Court of Owls,
That watches all the time,
Ruling Gotham from a shadowy perch,
Behind granite and lime.
They watch you at your hearth,
They watch you in your bed,
Speak not a whispered word of them,
Or they'll send the Talon for your head.
Welcome home... Gray Son...
Here, have a Talon!Dick Grayson moodboard!
Day 18. Favourite Dick Grayson in non-canon comics.
It has to be HIM.
Everything about him is interesting. He has no relation to Bruce or the "family" and he seems to have been taken by the owls when he was really young, which makes him the ultimate version of the Gray Son, and given that we will never see that in canon comics I am really glad we got this single issue to explore that Dick Grayson Variant.
But that's not all, I also find interesting the relationships that he does seem to have with both Thomas Elliot and Jason Todd.
Jason uses the name Dick to refer to the Gray Son, and he is the only person to do so, and that grabbed my attention, they are on (secret?) first name basis but they also don't trust each other very much. In the end they seem to have a frenemies relationship that was extremely fun to see however short their interactions were.
Lastly but not less important is Gray Son's character design. Holy shit! What a way to make the Talon suit work for Dick Grayson!
Dick had the right to look that good in his murder suit and he is rocking it! You would never catch Dick Grayson wearing mediocre suits or clothing!
I think it is safe to say that Gray Son is that bitch and that's the reason as to why he is my favourite non-canon Dick Grayson variant.
Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Batman: Hush
Purple Hyacinth/Court Of Owls/ Recs
*Disclaimer whatever being said are just observations and I have no intention of discrediting the work of any writer/artist*
Ok ok ok I have never seen a post or like anything about the similarities between purple hyacinth and the court of owls so this is what THIS is.
So basically the plot of purple hyacinth revolves around this organisation called the Phantom Scythe which is feared by the entire country. This organisation is (as of what we have seen and speculated) mainly made up of those in high society (I’m talking abt the apostles, I’ll get into this further). Their entire goal is to take down powerful members of society, wanting to improve conditions in the south shore. ((My speculation is that the leader just wants power and uses this message to get others to support him))
Sound familiar?
Okay so this is essentially the plot of Batman and The Court of Owls.
I mean just look at them. They both wear fancy masks
Also both organisations have assassins FROM CIRCUSES. DICK GRAYSON WAS THE GREAT GRANDSON OF THE LITERAL BEST TALON. And Bella Davenport basically worked there ever since she was “saved” from her abusive household
My headcannon is that the court of owls is what the phantom scythe might become if they aren’t stopped. They fr gonna be running the city
Also one last thing, the writer for this WEBTOON purple hyacinth, is a big fan of DC and I wonder if she drew any inspiration from the comics cause she wrote in a few joker quotes as well which COULD be hinting
I may be thinking too far into this
All the best heart-to-hearts happen when fists are flying!
