Kent State University protest 9/29/18
This #walkupnotout stuff is honestly so stupid. Yes, it's good to be there so the lonely kid and for the kids struggling with mental health. But suggesting being there for people magically will fix their mental illness is extremely ableist and ignorant.
I have PTSD. Despite having people there for me both during and after the truamaic event that caused this, I still got PTSD. Some of my friends were extremely bad for my recovery in fact, because guess what, we weren't medical professional. We didn't know how to handle that type of stituation. That ain't our fault, we were a bunch of 14 year olds it's no surprise that none of us knew how to deal with domestic abuse and the PTSD that followed.
But if we didn't even know how to prevent domestic abuse and aid in the recovery of that and PTSD, what the hell makes you guys think we could handle someone with homicidal (or other violent) thoughts/urges on our own, especially just by talking to them. That's not our job, that's the job of a medical professional.
If you think mental health is the problem then you should be advocating for better mental health treatment and easier access to treatment. Not blaming a bunch of minors for not having a deep enough understanding of mental health to prevent mass murder.
It's kinda sad how many people are sharing post about how teens are too young to understand gun control but also sharing posts about how teens need to talk to the "weird" and bullied kids to prevent these shooters. So we're not smart enough to protest for laws to protect us, but we're smart enough to understand the complex issues of mental health and how to handle someone who is having violent thoughts/urges???
