thank you to @elumish for their post discussing this thread, because i only open threads every few weeks and definitely wouldn’t have seen these otherwise.

this is a thread made by ao3 author gurlsrool, whose heated rivalry fanfics you’ve honestly probably already read, because they’re both lovely and well-loved.

i think it’s important to share these words everywhere that the heated rivalry fandom exists, even if i’m hopeful that most of the people making these sorts of comments aren’t the same people who are making the silly little tumblr posts i love so much.

just - from someone who’s been in fandom spaces for damn near two decades now, knowing that heated rivalry definitely is acting as Baby’s First Fandom for a lot of people: please please remember to treat fic writers (and fan artists and gif makers and everyone else who creates such beautiful fan work!) with RESPECT first and foremost! remember that you do NOT know these people and that treating your fellow fans like content machines is the exact opposite of what fandom is all about.

here are some old school fandom rules that i guess should make the rounds again:

DON’T ask an author for updates. you can tell them you look forward to reading more, but do not ask for schedules, tell them you’re gonna die waiting for more, or make any demands of them. it is damn near universally received as pressuring, and makes people want to write and share LESS.

DON’T sexualize an author or start trying to roleplay sexually with someone without their explicit consent. the comments of a fic are not the place for you shoot your shot with an author. even if you’re joking - don’t make jokes like that to strangers!

DLDR: don’t like, don’t read, and if you DID read, certainly don’t comment. get a journal! rant to your best friend about it! tell ur therapist! do not ever make it an author’s problem that you didn’t like their writing! if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything. seriously.

remember that not all authors are open to constructive criticism or even minor editing corrections - so pay attention to what sorts of feedback an author says they’re comfortable receiving. if you can’t tell/they don’t explicitly state they’re open to corrections or constructive feedback??? circle back to rule 3, and keep it to yourself.

fandom is supposed to be fun. writing fics is something people do for FUN. publishing those fics is something they do for FUN. they’re not doing this to entertain you and they are not here to serve or cater to you and your personal tastes and whims. when you do things that make fandom not fun, then the authors and the artists and the gifmakers and the people making funny little posts on whatever website you love the most? they’re gonna stop posting. they’re gonna stop sharing. they’re gonna move on. don’t be the person who makes someone else give up on a hobby that used to bring them joy.

all that said… for the love of all that is holy, please, yall, try to be normal 🫶🫶🫶 remember that everyone on here is another human being just trying to have a little fun. don’t be that guy!!!

What I've been reading in the second quarter of 2026:

Fic wordcount sure is up there xD though, not as crazy as I thought at first - had to subtract a Lot of fics bookmarked 'to read' (or 'didn't reread', bc my browser updated itself or sth and now all the Ao3 works in the Hollanov tag are blue titles again even the ones I've read before and I had gotten So used to just seeing grey titles as indicator of I've been here before lmao), but 3-4mil is pretty normal monthly wordcount for me

679 fics in April, 774 fics in May, only 316 in June, I think it's because I was super single focused onto Hollanov in the first months and read mainly shortfics, then branched out a bit and read a bunch of longfics in mainly Witcher and Star Wars fandoms? Wait, I have the fandom stats in my excel table somewhere lemme check :D

This is out of the 2270 fics I have clicked on without subtracting the To Reads so the numbers are off but I think the percentages are probably on par:

April is just Heated Rivalry. And More Heated Rivalry. five h50 fics in a row So Much More Heated Rivalry xD also very obvious when looking at my fic recs of the month, it's literally just 200+ Hollanov fics <3

May has even less diversity, Heated Rivalry with 1 Star Wars, 1 Merlin and 1 Challengers fic thrown in and I know the latter two are just bc I listened to epf podfics I was part of when they got posted o.o ~170 May recs (which show a couple more fandoms that get counted into June in my excel bc while I started reading them end of May the last visited is June)

And then in June I'm finally branching out and Heated Rivalry has gone down to 68% - not that I've abandoned Hollanov or anything, the obsession is still very much around xD but I spent a couple days here and there reading mainly other fandoms, and by now I've got multiple fandom tabs open that I switch between, as I usually do :) I especially got back into the Accidental Warlord Witcher 'verse by @inexplicifics, catching up on the new releases in the series and reading some really good inspired-by works, especially Jagoda of the Path by @kikanawj about a travelling lycanthrope healer! 40 June recs: Heated Rivalry, Witcher, & more :)

And in all three months 2093 fics (94%(!!!!!))Heated Rivalry, 70 fics (3%) Witcher, 28 fics (1%) Star Wars, 25 (1%) MCU / Captain America (Stucky), 7 (0,%) Hawaii Five-0, and 5 or less in Person of Interest, Holby City, The Old Guard, Gunpowder Milkshake, Good Omens, BtVS, Star Trek, Matilda, Warehouse 13, Challengers, Merlin, and Rizzoli and Isles.

There are a bunch of ao3 authors that show up again and again in my stats these past months, thank you so much for the good work, keeping me supplied with more fic food :D I read 17 fics by goldengalaxies, 12 by gurlsrool @gurlsrool, 11 by jockles @multishipperpirateking, 10 by barbidoo, 9 by uglygreenjacket @uglygreenjacket, 8 fics each by ghosttotheparty @ghosttotheparty and justhockey @everything-i-am and 7 by itsallfine (all of the above Heated Rivalry xD) and many many Holby City drabbles by @absedarian here on tumblr :D (I do my stats by doing an automated to excel thing from Ao3 so only fics I read there or bookmark- external-work saved there, which definitely covers the main chunk of what I read, but the Berena drabble challenge deserves a special mention because of just how many of them I read on tumblr!)

I haven't finished or started any new physical books, but I've made good progress on three of the books I've started in past months :) almost done with the twilight analysis for example!

Apropos twilight - what I didn't count into the wordcount because it's not a full fic and I didn't want to figure out chapter wordcounts, but definitely another big thing for the month: my podfic of Spilt Ink, Spilt Blood by @occams-painting-knife , an original character rework of the twilight series! Some of the chapters are several hours long xD so it's definitely a big part of what I've been reading. I'm mainly recording in the evenings after work (and sometimes just. during homeoffice when I've got nothing better to do and/or colleagues just expect me to be way slower bc my coworker who is doing the same tasks is just So fucking slow at them lmao. I could not be half as slow if I tried) and it's a nice evening ritual for me instead of watching TV! The story is super good I can definitely recommend reading (or listening of course :D) even if you're not a fan of twilight or don't know it at all.
