Only that thought lingered within Gurthang. It was caught between veils of time and place, and it did not know whither its soul had gone nor whither it would go. It did not know even if it had a soul to speak of. Such a thing was rather important to have when deciding what would happen after death.

Hmm for the ask game, how about Anglachel/Gurthang? One of my favorite Legendarium characters, well arguably a character. I think about Maeglin and the swords a lot.

First impression- probably when I read about Eöl forging both the swords. I always get excited when Tolkien names weapons.

Impression now- very cool!

Favorite moment- it's forging probably. It's so shrouded in mystery, I find it fascinating.

Idea for a story- I think its sentience being explored is fascinating. Like, can it actually think? Or simply react? Does Eöl have any control over it?

Unpopular opinion- I don't think I really have one lol

Favorite relationship- hmmm maybe with Beleg. He went out of his way to retrieve Gurthang, only to be slain by it.

Favorite headcanon- I think that Anguirel is just as sentient as Gurthang.

Urdolwen, a Qenya cognate of an early name for Gurthang

I thought the similarity between Urwen and Urdolwen was cute (despite the difference in language of course), so I made a little something with them.

Gurthang says “Ah, a lady after my own name!” in case it’s hard to see.

Yes, I have a favorite evil sword out of the two in the Silmarillion.

The two being: Anglachel<3, also know as Gurthang and… Anguirel.

Guess which one is the favorite.

Melian warning Beleg about Anglachel.. look at those stylish 19th century sideburns!!! (which is mostly inspired by Tolkien’s painting of Beleg finding Gwindor, where it almost looks like Beleg has a beard??!)
