It was like you were holding the world when you held her

“What do you mean gone?” The way his heart pounded in his chest, was almost painful as Wylan tried to make sense of the words he’d just heard. Gripping the strap of his lyre tighter, he listened intently to what Nina was saying next.
“I mean gone gone. Six feet below the ground.” There was sympathy in Nina’s eyes, which hurt him even more. She’d always believed in them, had paved the way for them when Wylan had been too shy to approach Jesper, unsure whether he was worthy enough to be in his presence or not. And now, Nina was the one giving him this devastating news. “He’s in the underworld. Gone while you were busy with your masterpiece.”
It felt like someone had stabbed him right then and there. The knowledge that he’d been too preoccupied to realise what had been happening nearly made him fall to his knees. Sweet Jesper, who had always supported him, had cheered him on, had tried his best to be there for Wylan, had been abandoned by him when he’d needed him the most. His heart was shattering into a million pieces, and he could hear the echoes of every shard hitting the ground, sending waves and waves of regret and sadness through him. Sadness that slowly turned into anger, because he wanted to shake the person responsible for all of this: himself.
Jesper had been his whole world, and now, there was a hole where his world used to be. He wasn’t complete without him.
“I have to get him back.” The determination in his voice stunned him a little bit, but he’d never been more convinced. Yes, he’d been distracted by writing the song that would bring the world back into tune, that would bring spring back again, the song they all needed, but in wanting to not let Jesper down and finish the song, he’d left him all alone to fight the cold and the hunger. He’d never forgive himself, if he couldn’t get Jesper back. He wouldn’t be able to live without him.
“You got a ticket?” Nina’s voice snapped him back to the moment, his eyes widening as he realised that he in fact didn’t have a ticket. “Didn’t think so.”
“There has to be another way!” There simply had to be!
“There is, but I shouldn’t tell you.” Tilting her head to the side, Nina watched Wylan closely for a moment, before she caved. “It won’t be easy walking and it ain’t for the sensitive of soul, so… do you really wanna go?”
“With all my heart!” There wasn’t a second of hesitation, just complete determination to bring the man he loved back home. He’d do anything, and so Nina pulled him aside and told him that he had to watch out, stay out of sight and try to stay in the darkness of the night. There wasn’t a map she could give him, but if he kept on walking, he’d reach his destination. Your heart knows the way, she told him, and deep down he knew that she was right. They’d always been like two magnets, drawn to each other.
It was with a racing heart that he started his journey, his lyre on his back, his loyal companion, because he knew what he was capable of with the lyre in hand and his voice accompanying the music. The lyre was the only thing he had, the only thing he needed, because there was nobody who could come with him, not even Nina. It was his own mission with one clear goal. His singing paved his way into the underworld, slipping through the cracks in the wall that opened up wide for him, but that had been the easy part.
Fear gripped him tight the first time he heard voices, as he slipped back into the shadows, back pressed against the wall so nobody would hear him. The moment the voices died down again, he kept going.
And going.
And going.
Wylan had no idea how long he’d been walking, because everything blurred into one, until he heard someone call out. Not just one person, there were more voices, asking who he was, what he thought he was doing, but he ignored them, kept on walking till he couldn’t feel his feet anymore. Nobody saw him, but they knew that he was there, that someone was there.
If it weren’t for Jesper, he would have given up or turned around, but he knew what he was fighting for. Jesper was somewhere here and he needed to find him. His own life was worthless without him anyway, so he was not going back without him by his side.
Even when he thought he was getting lost, he kept on walking, stayed focused so they wouldn’t catch him. He got so close to being caught multiple times, but managed to slip away and stay undetected at the last minute.
How long he’d been walking - weeks? Months? Years? - he had no clue, but he’d made it. The first glimpse he caught of Jesper made his heart nearly stop inside his chest, before it started beating so hard and fast that he was sure that someone would hear it. Jesper was unaware of Wylan as it seemed, at least at first, but then he lifted his head, as if he was sensing something, even if he wasn’t seeing him yet. But how should he see him when Wylan was still shrouded in darkness?
Now that Wylan had reached him, he didn’t have to hide anymore. Now that he’d reached his destination and had Jesper right in front of him, he sprinted up to him and said the first thing that came to his mind, the first thing he’d ever said to him when they’d met: “Come home with me!”
Jesper turned to look at him, a look of shock crossing his face, but only for a second until he realised just who it was. “It’s you!” he whispered in disbelief, hands reaching out to Wylan, who couldn’t believe his luck.
“It’s me!” he reassured him, his own hand reaching out to cup Jesper’s cheek, who immediately turned his face into it, pulling him closer with the other hand to make sure that Wylan wasn’t going anywhere.
“Wylan.” Another whisper as the tears fell. Tears that Wylan swiped away with his thumb, but it was no use. Especially not when his own tears started falling.
“Jesper.”
And for a moment, it was just the two of them, as they sank into each other’s arms and kissed. A moment when Wylan held his world in his arms again, when they both felt whole and swore that nothing would ever break them apart again.
- I used to see the way the world could be. But now the way it is, is all I see
