Handoff initiated

I was reading System Collapse, and wondered about differences in communication styles/limitations between ART and MB, and between ART and Iris.

[At the beginning of System Collapse when ART-drone gets separate from main ART just before the blackout zone]

ART's drone rose up out of the back row behind me [...]. The handoff hadn't occurred yet, but we were almost to the blackout point, forty-two seconds to go.

[...]

On the team feed, ART said, Handoff initiated. Good luck.

"Acknowledged. Thanks, Peri," Iris said, smiling. "Be careful up there. See you soon."

On my private feed, ART said, Take care of them. And yourself. Before I could come up with a reply, my awareness of ART, its cameras, its feed and comm, the humans working and talking to each other on ART, or using the comm to talk to Mensah and the other humans on the Preservation responder, dropped away. I had expected it to be immediate, but the voices and signals gradually lost volume, fading into an echo, then into nothing.

[Then when they reconnect with ART, and ART retrieves everything from ART-drone and they become one again]

ART slid into the shared processing space with ART-drone. For a brief moment, there was two of it. [...]

I was monitoring ART-drone's systems and it was dropping toward catastrophic failure. I said, You need to hurry.

ART: handoff initiated.

ART-drone: handoff.

And ART-drone shut down. Suddenly, it was just a chunk of metal. Iris made a half-sob noise that startled me so badly I flinched. She [...] and said on our private channel, Did they have time for the upload?

Yes, I said.

It struck me that even though Iris is an augmented human, interacting with ART since they were both babies, and its favourite human, she does not seem to have the full awareness of ART in her feed unlike MB does. She needs to be told when hanoff is initiated. She also didn't know whether ART-drone had time to upload everything to ART before it shut down, which terrified her with the possibility of losing even a little piece of her beloved Peri.

MB, on the other hand, could feel ART's presence in its feed as soon as they are within range. It could also monitor ART-drone's systems, just like ART (and ART-drone) has been monitoring MB's internal status. I wonder ART chose to conduct the handoff in the shared processing space between ART-drone and MB for a brief catch-up, or MB could observe handoff because it has been given full access to ART-drone.

Somewhere, MB mentioned that humans with some special augment can interact with feed more directly, like Gurathin did, but even with augments humans are slow and cannot process multiple things simultaneously unlike SecUnits. Maybe that is why Iris does not have access to ART's system as she is incapable to handling multiple inputs and would get confused.

I really liked the scene following the handoff where MB and Iris share some emotions. And seems like ART loved its favourite two sharing a moment about itself!
