The Hand of Glory
(Graphitint pencils on paper, 2024)
🕯🪙 HAND OF GLORY 🪙🕯
Personal art from tonight, I have a list of fun medieval oddities I want to draw and this is one of them ✨️
I made a couple of bone rings from the hand that was used for the pendulums. These bones are the carpals or wrist bones of the left had of an antique medical display. Ethically and legally obtained. Blessed and consecrated under the dark moon. Not available in all areas. Hand of Glory
In Medieval Europe, thieves were punished by having their hand cut off in a public setting or cut off after they were hung. People believed a thief's amputated hand was a relic, often making it into a candle and calling it a "Hand of Glory." It was said to have the power to open any locked door.
Today's #drawlloween prompt was for a candelabra, but I decided to do a Hand of Glory instead. A HoG was supposed to be the dried and pickled hand of a hanged man, specifically the left hand (or in the case of a murderer, the 'hand that did the deed'). Old European beliefs attributed great power to such an artifact when combined with a candle (or candles) made from the fat of the corpse it came from. Creepy, huh? #mabsdrawlloweenclub #mabsdrawlloweenclub2019 #handofglory #candelabra #penandink #blackandwhite #sketchbook #sketches https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Loh7Njat7/?igshid=erg07snsvrwf
Hand of Glory. . The Hand of Glory is the dried and pickled hand of a man who has been hanged, often specified as being the left (Latin: sinister) hand, or, if the man were hanged for murder, the hand that "did the deed." Old European beliefs attribute great powers to a Hand of Glory combined with a candle made from fat from the corpse of the same malefactor who died on the gallows. The candle so made, lighted, and placed (as if in a candlestick) in the Hand of Glory, would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented. . #art #artist #artwork #illustration #design #drawing #draw #sketch #sketchbook #blackbook #moleskine #copic #copicmultiliner #micron #penandink #blackandwhite #blackwork #skull #fire #handofglory #sinister #lowbrow #lowbrowart #philly #phillyart #deathchamps https://www.instagram.com/p/BsgZHSDDhbe/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1roxbf9d5td0q
