One of the things that bothers me the most about Bones is how little they mention the children!! Like Christine comes up and shows up pretty often, but what about Michael Vincent! Or Hank! Or Daisy’s kid for heaven’s sake! Like when Hodgins ended up in the wheelchair I don’t remember them mentioning how it affects Michael Vincent at all, whilst going into how Hodgins is struggling and how it’s affecting Angela. What the heck, guys. You’re sorta talking about separating and not once do you bring up the fact that you HAVE A KID. What’s with that?

Seeley Booth Character Analysis

Facts:

Abandoned by his mother & had a physically abusive and alcoholic father

Was raised majority by his grandfather. Admits to His grandfather is the reason he didn’t kill himself as a child/teen.

Fiercely protective of his brother throughout both of their lives.

Was mostly popular growing up in school passable academically and extremely successful in sports. He struggled to maintain long-term relationships romantic or otherwise. 

Deeply religious specifically Roman Catholic

Was a sniper in the army. While serving he experienced torture, lost soldiers, and was deeply upset when he killed a target in front of his child.

Struggles with gambling addiction he handles fairly well till a relapse near the end of the show.

Has a son called Parker with his ex-girlfriend. He proposed to her and she turned him down. Parker had a good relationship when Parker was young but the relationship was more distant when Parker moved away. He was named after a fallen soldier booth felt responsible for.

 Becomes infatuated with Bones from day one, though their own past emotional damage stood in the way of their relationship for years.  Does end up with Bones after her turning him down before and many fights. They have two children a daughter Christine and a son Hank.

Starts as a friend (with benefits) with Cam even when the relationship is no longer sexual he stays close to her. Over the years he becomes closer to Angela, some of the squinterns and learns to work with Hodgins and will protect each other.

Becomes friends with his therapist Gordon Gordon who helps him locate the bottom of his anger after he shots an ice cream truck clown. 

Has an operation on his brain after suffering from hallucination stimming from his brain tumour. 

Of the team, besides Bones, his closet relationship is with Sweets, resistant to him at first. Gordon Gordon & Bones decide Sweets is like "a duck who imprinted" of Booth and Bones. H

Struggles to form a relationship with Aubrey (who replaced sweets as his FBI partner) though they do become partners but never family.

Experiences many injuries, torture and death of friends in his FBI career. Often in a self-sacrificing. Some of the most impactful relate to murders who become attached to them personally. Notably, Palant who effects hi and Bones relationship multiple times as well as threatening his children and Angela and Hodgins.

Spent many years as an FBI agent feeling a sense of loyalty even wethering their false causal of Bones.  he was imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit booth and Bones even try and break from their profession though this doesn’t stick and they rejoin the team.

Analysis:

Booth shoots from the hip and follows his instinct. He his deeply driven by his emotions, though he struggles to understand how to process or share what he feels. He often falls short of the things he wants tending to end up not addressing the deeper problems they are facing. He will protect those he considers "his" to his own or the aggressors' end. Booth considers the Jeffersonian team, his imidate family, his FBI partner (sweets then Aubrey) and Caroline as "his".

Booth expects himself to meet a highly on traditional ideas of a Christian American male identity. He is usually okay at not pressing it on others, especially as the show continues but never really stops holding himself to this ideal. Throughout his life he falls into stereotypically masculine roles; American football player, a leader and “hero” in the army, law enforcement, wanting to marry and have kids, attempts to be protector and leader in his family.

His life however in multiple ways constantly challenged his schemas he grew with a broken family, struggled with his mental health, deeply conflicted over his army service (though he rarely admits this), had a non-traditional family himself and was betrayed by the FBI. In positive ways as well Bones challenged him to rethink American ideas, was the higher provider to his family, ended up being the one to propose had two of his three children out of wedlock. He ended up with a family of squints who he respected even when they didn’t agree. His belief in being a protector and Catholicism never came into doubt but some of the more prejudicial and blind loyalty to the power structure aspects of his belief system dropped.

Booth was deeply shaped by the violence he saw as a kid. His unflinching ability to act as a protector and tendency to get himself almost dead came from how he acted as a hero to his brother as kids. His macho persona acts as a protective shell the same way the intellectual facade protects Bones. Booth would and does often almost throw himself into the fire if he thought it could save someone else, his admittance to having destructive nearly suicidal thoughts as a child seems to have never quite left him. Though as an adult they are more oriented to overzealous need to protect his loved ones.

His relationship with Cam is often helpful as she is one of the only people who had a plain understanding of Booth and is not going to take Bones’ side over his by default. Her knowledge of a younger booth allows her to help Bones and the others have some perspective on his life before he opens up. Their romantic relationship is mostly over even when they do carry on a short sexual relationship when she first moves to DC, however, Cam can tell he is not in love with her and they admit they were never going to be each other's forever person. This is solidified in a kind of mean way when Booth tells her the other Squints and himself will leave with Bones if she tries to pick a power struggle.  

His relationship with Angela is generally quite friendly. Early on Angela is slightly flirty though this quickly becomes purely platonic as she (and everyone else)  is deeply aware that Booth and Bones are in love. They would both would protect the other from harm, and Angela often acts as an emotion filter for bones helping their relationship. Hodgins and he never have a particularly deep personal relationship, their worldviews often conflict causing them to not really be friends. But it becomes clear through the years they are family in the end. Even though he doesn't become particularly close with the "Squinterns" he is willing to help Arastoo protect his family, support Wendel when he is ill and Daisy names her child after him.  Within the FBI he is continuously close with Caroline who he is friends with, Caroline is generally willing to push to protect and help Booth's team and booth, in turn, helps her out as well.

Booth was close to his grandfather as a child, Booth deeply respects him and loves him greatly. Later on, though they spend less time with each other as he is ageing and booth's life is always hectic, booth his deeply saddened by his loss. Booth's father  Edwin Booth, was a consistent source of shame and hurt in his life, though is death did send booth for a loop. Booth consistently tries to be the person his dad is not. His mother Marianne Booth was distant when Booth was a child and he attempted to act as some kind of protector from the violence she experienced at the hand of Edwin, she disappeared for twenty-four years after booth reached early adulthood. His relationship with his brother Jared is continuously strained, they spend very little time together later on though Booth ends up trying to still protect him in a violent aftershock which injures Booth and kills Jared.

Booth values his relationships with his children greatly and consistently wants to give them the best life he can.  Parker and his connection wa especially strong with Parker is a young child and is more distant when he is older and moves with his mom overseas. Booth's relationship with Christine ends up being turbulent in her infancy she and her father are separated for months due to Bones being targeted, later Booth spends months in jail again away from Christine and then after he slips into his gambling addiction Bones has him leave until he is able to get into recovery.

Bones and his relationship was a relationship that started as a spark that they didn't take. Their relationship grew extremely close through working together for so long, it was strained periodically but they were able to always whether it. Booth tells bones once that he always knew they were meant to be together, bones wouldn't take him yet as she wasn't sure she could let him in, or stand to lose him. They eventually got together around a painful loss but were able to stay together through Christine forcing them to stop being dumb and be together. Their relationship was continuously rocked by the circumstances as attempting to be crime-fighting heroes and their serious lack of ability to communicate. Their relationship was strong through the way they mutually pushed each other to be better and were always willing to try and understand and help each other even when they were mad. 

Booth's other most important relation from the main crew is the one he had with Sweets. Booth fills an older brother/father figure for Sweets he even lives with them after his break up with Daisy.  Booth was constantly outwardly resistant to the closeness but rarely put up an actual fight. Sweets actively seek a connection with Booth and want to please and impress him. Booth hated Sweet's overly emotional view but still ends up seeking Sweet's advice and ends up always helping Sweets. Sweets finds a family with Booth and Bones he latches on to their shared experiences with child abuse and lack of strong families. Booth is resistant at first but can't help but love him anyway. Sweets loss devastates booth opening up Booth to sliding back into his addiction.

Booth overall is a deeply damaged man who uses a strong belief system to be able to keep it together (mostly). Throughout the show, we see an interesting shift in a lot of the edges of his worldview allowing his primary drive to love and protect his own family, blood or not, as much as he can. He is self-sacrificing and gruff but again his love for his family is able to drive through and allow the best parts of him to shine through like his childish love of socks or his ability to dance and bowl.  There is a disagreeable tendency to defend America in an over attached way but his growth is an interesting depiction of masculinity. Overall he is a good man has suffered a large amount of pain who wants to do good and generally does but he ended up feeling driven to do some horrible things.

Chronic Pain:

He has injuries that still bother him starting with bone damage they can still see on x-rays from childhood and time at war. Those injuries and continuous attacks and general strenuous activity seem to have left him chronic pain issues. Throughout the show, he mentions pain in mostly his back but other things as well. Bones mentions on more than one occasion that he can't really always run himself ragged, but he really doesn't listen to this. He is the kind of person who pushes past pain though it does bother him.
