FLORENCE + THE MACHINE. It’s 10 years since the release of ‘Lungs’, the debut album from @florenceandthemachine — a masterpiece. I feel proud to have been part of this era. Florence was the very first music artist I was commissioned to create work for in 2009 + the long term collaboration has shaped my career as a Creative Director. Florence is an extraordinary artist. I’ve always been drawn to the physical and visceral nature of her performance and how she embodies the duality of dark and light; the contrast of she moves across the stage like a bird in flight, casting spells on the crowd — to the thunderous and reckless punk attitude that commands attention. My role was to emphasise and enhance Florence’s movements, an extension of the essence of her spirit + songs. This was my gateway into the music world — where the power of poetry meets performance. The experience still runs through my veins and continues to influence the space I now inhabit with my multi-disciplinary practice. The intention behind all my collaborative work with performers is about empowering the artist, to empower their audience. I’m so grateful to be trusted by artists to visualise their music, not just Florence, but everyone I’ve collaborated with over the years + continue to — it’s a real privilege and honour.
