Lore - Aeons

The Aeons are eldritch, incomprehensible forces of chaos, destruction, repression, and artificiality. Aeons are the Anti-Nature, and the frequent enemies of the Fae.

Morphology

Aeons come in all shapes and sizes, but most fall on a spectrum between "mostly human looking" to "completely incomprehensible to the human mind". The more powerful an Aeon, the more larger and more incomprehensible their form is. Their genders are just as incomprehensible and diverse as their forms, with some identifiying with human genders, and some having strange and alien Aeon genders that one could only begin to imagine.

Aeons cannot die, and when "killed" they become nothing but frothing, tormented concousness buried deep within Eden. A dead Aeon may come back from this, although it is a long and agonzing process and they are never the same afterwards.

It is in the nature of an Aeon to find its way to earth and cause as much chaos and misfortune as possible. Most Aeons that you would find in the world are smaller, weaker ones that managed to wriggle out of small places in Eden. Once on earth, some willingly return to Eden to rest, and others must be banished back.

They are not patrons of any sort of concept, they simply exist and have small power over whatever domain or gimmick they may have, and those may overlap with other Aeons as well. Two Aeons with the exact same domain or gimmick is increadibly rare but not unheard of.

Not all Aeons are evil, and in fact most of them cannot be considered of any human morality at all. There are of course, some Aeons who take knowing delight in the suffering of others, and other Aeons who love deeply and care for others, but they are rare and difficult to find.

Butterflies and Metamorphosis

A Butterfly is a human who has become an Aeon through a process called Metamorphosis. A human can only experience Metamorphosis during a time where they are experiencing extreme emotion, and have previously encountered another Aeon, knowingly or not.

Most Butterflies appear in a humanoid form at first, although the integrity of this form tends to deteriorate over time, starting as a warped physical form and slowly transitioning to a metaphysical one, alongside the Butterfly's sense of humanity. This loss of their former life is part of growing as an Aeon, and some Butterflies are so old that even they do not remember their former lives. Only once the transition to a metaphysical form is complete can a Butterfly take a host.

Most Butterflies succumb to the distructive instincts of an Aeon upon Metamorphosis, and usually only those that know in advance what Aeons are can avoid becoming agents of chaos.

No human can Metamorphosize into a Demiurge.

Demiurges

A Demiurge is a godlike Aeon, with significantly more power and influence over the world. There are very few of them in existence and when killed, a Demiurge is more likely than not to transform into the form of a human, where it will attempt to grow in power again.

These humans that were formed from a dying Demiurge have no knowledge of their former glory, and are frequently targets of smaller Aeons, trying to prevent the Demiurge from regaining its original power. These dead Demiurges will infinitely reincarnate in human form until they can regain their glory.

It is incredibly difficult for most Demiurges to leave Eden, and many require elaborate rituals performed by loyal followers to be drawn into the human world. Some of them whisper to small groups of humans and control cults to themseves in order to be summoned to earth, and some place parts of themselves in human hosts to wreck havoc by proxy.

Eden

Eden is the strange and alien otherworld in which the Aeons reside. It an ever shifiting and changing and twisting place, at one moment steely bloodstained halls reminiscent of Silent Hill, the next an eerie empty soft play. There are places that do not change, small pockets of tranquility among the writhing ruckus. That is of course if you can ignore the smell.

It is the deep drive of most Aeons to get out of Eden to Earth, although some are prefectly happy to stay in Eden and simply influence others through the veil between worlds.

If one were to enter Eden as a human, one could theoretically survive, although its likely one would die to an environmental hazard or be eaten by a stray Aeon. If a Fae were to enter Eden, it would be drained of power until it either left Eden or was subsumed into the landscape of Eden itself.

Hosts and Possession

Aeons can take human hosts, and usually these hosts are powerful people, billionares or members of government, or any other high ranking person who could cause a lot of problems under the right circumstances.

A host may or may not be aware of their possession, maybe they believe they're doing everything of their own free will, or perhaps they are a prisoner in their own body, helplessly watching the Aeon puppet their body. A strong enough host can take back control and imprision the Aeon inside their mind, although the Aeon is freed when the host dies. An Aeon may even kill the mind of the host and become the sole resident of the body. It is believed that a particularly powerful host could kill or subsume the Aeon in their mind and take its place, although this has never happened before, and its unknown if its truly possible

When an Aeon leaves a host, the host's form is usually altered in some way, due to the lingering power of the Aeon. The longer the Aeon was there, the more dramatic the alterations. From strange scars to being fully transformed into a monster, anything can happen. Many other hosts are killed upon the exit of the Aeon from their body, or die soon afterwards.

Aeons can possess both humans and Fae, but prefer humans. An Aeon would never knowingly possess a Fae, and the only documented instances of this happening have been due to subterfuge on the part of the Fae.

Mother Cosmos

Mother Cosmos is the legendary creator god of the Aeons. She is said to have created the world alongside her counterpart, Mother Nature. As Mother Nature made creation, order, life, and the Fae, Mother Cosmos made destruction, chaos, death and the Aeons. The two of them made worlds for their creations to exist in, Eden and Fairyland, and when the two worlds bled together, they created Earth.

It is unkown if she truly exists, and if she does she has been dormant for a very, very long time. It seems more than likely she would be incomprehensible even to the Aeons themselves. Many invoke her name as a blessing or a curse, and those who believe in her are deathly afraid of invoking her wrath.

Transformation Tuesday #59

Yesterday, I ran a presentation for my college’s Science Fiction/Fantasy Literature Club on the topic of magical girls. Click here to be taken to the presentation in Google Slides (it has been slightly edited for my own anonymity).
