something in aot i don't see anyone ever talking about (and something i noticed while rewatching season 3and 4) is that the eldian restorationists are operating off of completely fabricated/propagandized evidence of what the eldian empire actually was. stick with me come into my mind palace read my thoughts
the scene in question that made me look at their whole operation sideways was the scene in grisha's memories where he's giving a speech on the "true" nature of the eldian empire and how what marley says about the empire is all lies. he points to a page in a book of titans holding wooden beams and ymir stepping over a newly constructed bridge and says "look! they weren't killing people! they were helping and building infrastructure for the entire empire to enjoy!" (nevermind that the "entire empire" doesn't include the people they supposedly subjugated we're just skipping over that one) and grice asks him how he knows that because the book he's holding is untranslated, and grisha says that he doesnt!! he can't fucking read any of it! he just sees the pictures and has faith in the eldian empire and blindly assumes that the passage is about the benevolence of the nine, which not only says a lot about his ideology but the ideology of the eldian restorationists - an ideology that eventually morphs into jägerism.
the scene for reference bc it's kinda glossed over ^
from the beginning, it's clear that we're supposed to see not only grisha but also anyone who wishes for the return of the eldian empire (eren, floch, the jägerists) as misguided and/or willfully ignorant. it makes it really fucking hard to root for any of the main cast in season 4 until the rumbling is already in progress because only then do they realize what the cost of an eldian empire according to the jäger's philosophy would actually be.
and marley's fucked up!! the whole world treats eldians like shit and it's awful do not get me wrong but by the time the main story takes place they're only a century or so out from total eldian subjugation. are we disregarding the general global narrative that "hey being under the control of people who can weaponize superhuman cannibalistic giants for 2000 years really sucked" just because grisha jäger said it's all a lie? is that where we're at? we have infinitely more evidence to support the idea of a ruthless eldian empire (global sentiment towards eldians, the story of the empire's origin in from you 2000 years ago, the tybur family's influence pre-titan war) than we do to support the idea that they were super chill and not expansionist or malicious at all. the rumbling is a final extension of the eldian imperialist project, and clearly, obviously, no matter how horribly a people are treated, that doesn't justify genocide.
and this along with a lot of other stuff is why i really really hate the "eldians are jews" parallels because obviously aesthetically it's there and it's very intentional and i'm not gonna beat the dead horse everyone's already beat but know that it's not going over my head. i dunno i think i really didn't get it when i first watched this show (i was 14 and thought all the geopolitics scenes were boring) but looking back it's very clear what people were uncomfortable with when season 4 was first dropping.
this series is so good and so fucking bad at worldbuilding it blows my mind. this shit contains Multitudes. but i've strayed away from my main point which is that the jägerists don't know jack! they're a fascist offshoot of a monarchist and imperialist ideology that sought to restore a brutal empire rather than progressive revolution. "but what were the eldians gonna do without the hope of an eldian empire" idk man! figure it out! go find this universe's equivalent to marx or something! the restorationists' stated goal was to free eldians by flipping racial division in their favor, not by creating a new society where everyone was equal regardless. joining the war on racism on the side of racism! there's a million and one reasons not to like jägerists (the real people walking among us that genuinely believe that eren eliminating 80% of humanity was a chill and justified thing) but rewatching season 4 with a significantly more developed brain really puts it into perspective.
also. very off topic but speaking of stuff being put into perspective. gabi could've slimed that entire airship and i'd still defend her to my last breath. she genuinely deserved to kill. she deserved nuclear weaponry for the shit the scouts did at liberio
me when i make no fucking sense
