This is gonna be a #hottake
Anyone who wants to go on hormones should be able to go on hormones.
No one should feel obligated to keep their natal hormones. No one should feel obligated to keep their natal anatomy either.
I wrote down some thoughts and realized that HRT and gender-confirming surgeries ought to be treated a little more like tattoos/piercings. A way of permanent self-expression, able to accessed by anyone willing to go through with it.
Of course there are differences in that a tattoos or piercings arenât going to literally save peopleâs lives. And Iâm not advocating for demedicalization of HRT and gender-confirming surgeries.
Iâm simply saying that, regardless of gender, if you feel like you want to pursue HRT or a surgery, look into it! Know the risks! Think about the benefits! If you think youâd benefit from an orchiectomy, hysterectomy, etc, research it. Learn the aftercare and life changes associated with them. Likewise for HRT. If you think youâd benefit from going on E or T, research it. Learn as much as you can about these things. Think about if itâs right for you. Gatekeeping, in the end, only hurts the community as a whole. Shuts doors on people who need help, and a sense of belonging.
Life is a choose-your-own-adventure. You donât have to feel stuck with the body you were born into.
