Summary: 

When Marinette turns 21 and is finally of age to pick up her soulmate journal, she expects to immediately be put in contact with a certain blond crush of hers like she’s always dreamed of. However, when she opens up the journal to find it already half-filled with entries from a soulmate who had long given up on ever getting a reply, she wonders what cruel joke the universe must be playing on her.  When Gabriel hears the tell-tale sound of pencil against paper coming from a long-forgotten leather-bound journal, he nearly thinks he’s imagining things. After all, he’d long given up on believing in the soulmate system and had moved on to find love elsewhere. However, he finds himself presented with an opportunity he can’t pass up: a chance to get closer to his leading suspect for Ladybug’s civilian identity and possibly a new opportunity to get the earrings he so desperately needs to bring back his long-lost wife.  All best-laid plans are bound to have complications, though. Actually beginning to harbor feelings for his enemy, however, was not one Gabriel expected.

Opinion: Oh my god! This fic is the whole reason I got into Gabrinette in the first place. It’s so good! It has a realistic development of the relationship from a canon timeline and a nuanced take on Soulmates and that relationships aren’t Happily Ever After but take work. It’s also surprisingly cute in some places. Like it feels accurate to how these two would act and react. I really do love this fic and it’s my go-to rec for Gabrinette.

“Are you for real? Really, for real?”

“No idea what you mean,” Hawks yawned, flipping himself more comfortably in the pillow of goose-down pillows. His bare feet kicked back and forth in the air absently, boredly.

Yu stood peering into the series of large mirrors tat made up the entirety of the closet wall, turning back and forth as she inspected herself. She’d been preening, previously, until she noticed a large darkening mark just under her chin. She turned to him, blonde hair flipping over her shoulder, and scowled. 

“My costume covers like, all of me, except for my head and the top of my neck- so please tell me why you decided it was okay to leave a hickey there?” she whined, voice increasing in both volume and pitch until Hawks pulled a pillow right over his head.

“Aesthetic,” he called back, voice muffled in the fabric.

“My PR is gonna go batshit on me! They’re still not over me trying to tie your stupid feathers in my hair!” Even with nobody looking she posed carefully, hands on bare hips, fingers delicately manicured with glittering jewels of red.

Hawks peeked from under the pillow, eyes blank. “Cover it with make-up.”

“Okay, until I’ve got to actually work and then the make-ups gone.”

He sighed, letting it flutter long and drawn out before shoving the pillow from his head. Hawks stretched on the bed, wings shivering as the extended and pulled back in. “Fine, just… come here and make one to match, then.”

“Fuck off.”

“What d’you want, then? Jewelry?”

Oh, there was a thought. Not jewelry, though. “You’re posing for the cover of Quirksie next month?”

He shrugged. “I dunno. Could be.”

“You are,” she informed him, grinning. She turned back into the mirror and tilted her head up, looking at the bruise. “Get me on it with you and I won’t be mad anymore.”

“I don’t think you’re even that mad,” he accused. “It’ll be gone by tomorrow.”

Yeah, it probably would. She’d had a lot of hickeys in her time. Ugh. She pressed a finger into the mark, watching it light up and fade again. Well then. Still smiling brightly, she turned back and ran quick steps to the bed, jumping on the giant mattress and sending pillows toppling everywhere. 

Hawks moved out of the way with a half-hearted grunt, his wings dodging pitifully. She crawled over and hovered above him, wrapping her arms around his chest (and wings, as best she could) teasingly. He didn’t fight her, long used to it, long tired of trying to feign carelessness with just her around. She leaned close, hair falling into his face. An absent feather twitched by, lifting her bangs out of his mouth and eyes.

“Make it bigger then,” she teased, voice dropping swiftly. “I wanna see it for days.”

He laughed. Well.

They hadn’t been in the tabloids for a couple days, anyway. 

Might as well make it a little more fun.

Eternally a WIP. I get so excited by new projects that I often forget about old ones. They get carefully put away and gather dust until I stumble across them again. This drawing was started over a year ago and has been languishing out of sight and out of mind. There are so many new things that I want to get started on but simultaneously haven’t had the motivation to do - and I think it’s because of these old projects cluttering up my workspace and my little head. So I’m endeavouring to finally finish what I started before trundling into bigger and better projects.
