I have like 9 things on my to-do list and Heathcliff fucking CLAWED his way to the top as if I don't have actual urgent business to tend do. What the hell. Kill me
Insert good description here that's supposed to make this hot—you're both toxic to each other and he really likes your legs, and that's… kind of it. Also: you're a bit of an ass.

"Down. Roll over. Paw. Ah… good. You've improved so much, Heathcliff."
I don't have time to waste, so let's put this bluntly: Heathcliff needs you to live. This doesn't just mean "he would strongly prefer you not die", but also "he relies on you to give him stability and will mentally, emotionally, and financially shatter at your disappearance, whether real or imagined". Is this hot to you? Maybe. Who knows. Sometimes it's kind of annoying—anyone would expect a grown man like him to know how to provide for himself, but whatever. You find yourself benefiting from this admittedly perverse power imbalance at times, so you tolerate it.
"Haa…" he sighs, nuzzling into your hand when you pat him. "Cheer— a-ahem. I mean… thank you…"
Clap!
Strictly speaking, you're his roommate; his name is also on the lease of this apartment, and not as a pet. Worst decision ever. EVER. EVER!!! NEVER AGAIN. At the time, you were just grateful to learn that a dirty creature like him from the streets knows how to read and lift up a pen in the first place, and some might be wondering, how could be afford to pay the security deposit despite coming from a poor background? Well, he didn't. You covered that for him. You also cover the electricity, water, A/C, grocery, and internet bills too, since most jobs aren't very keen on hiring someone so… Heathcliff. If that wasn't enough, when you come home tired and worn out from a busy day at work, you also have to be the one to sate all of his temper tantrums that he'd often throw one way or another. If he's sulking and brooding in a corner somewhere, you have to be the one to console him lest someone wants to pay a fee for damaged property. If he wants to play games, you play games with him. If he's acting needy and wants attention, you give him attention. Then, since he despises being kept in such an enclosed environment for long periods of time, you have to let him out to go on walks. Ah, but who would trust someone like him to be well-mannered when even the mildest threat (and trust me, there are plenty of that for wolves like him) is enough to set him off? He'd probably murder someone who breathed at him wrong if his mood was foul enough. No, he has to be supervised, so you end up being dragged along for this too. Guess who can't rest then. Guess who can't rest ever. It's a miracle you haven't overdosed on cortisol considering how unexpectedly high-maintenance he is.
So mentally, emotionally, and financially speaking, you are his owner, and dogs need their owners to look after them. It probably won't take that much effort nor time to make this physical, either. Now, is this unethical? Sure. Will this cause internal tensions and long-term conflict? Yeah. It has been. And have you had to scold him numerous times for overstepping your boundaries: eating too much of the food YOU bought for yourself, making a mess of YOUR living space, giving you cheek despite sleeping on YOUR couch? Definitely. In fact, most of the times, his unruly behavior is at your expense. How ungrateful is he?
Yet the reward for this risky venture can be pleasant if you know how to make use of it. As you can see in front of you, with the way he doesn't bite back at your hand, he's gotten much better at regulating himself over time. It took about a year of training—you had to be patient with him, since it's expected for a ruffian with a sour attitude to have: a sour attitude, duh—though you didn't frame it in such an obvious way for a while unless you wanted to get your head smashed in. Quietly, you established a routine that is actually quite simple: if he does something you like, you'll clap your hands together and get him food. Hot, fresh, meaty, oily, just how he likes it.
"Oh!" You proclaimed upon feeling the unexpectedly clean floor underneath your feet as you stepped into your home one day. You've been meaning to organize the place, but it seems like he's gotten to that way before you—when you stay away for long durations, he rarely gets bored enough to start helping you around the house. Besides that… you're not too sure what he's up to, but as long as he's not causing any problems, you don't really have it in you to care. Oh, but you did make a rule to never let him outside unattended, so he's mostly indoors by himself. Sure, he can go on his phone or the computer, but his claws make it very difficult to do so without scratching any hardware, nor is he any good at navigating them—you've also shown him enough horror stories on the internet to make him wary of it.
Wolves are social animals. They require connections to live. They need to communicate with others, exchange ideas, form close bonds, experience intimacy, and all sorts of other things that one cannot to with a single person. So what happens to someone whose brain is overflowing with thoughts and feelings built up from years of isolation? They release it in outstanding bursts the moment an opportunity to express them presents itself, otherwise they collapse under the weight of their own mind.
So to Heathcliff, sweeping tiles or wiping down shelves or washing clothes might be the closest thing he has to a healthy coping mechanism besides regular exercise and his journal (those two are quite obvious anyway). He needs something to quiet his blaring thoughts. He needs to be too tired to think. It's quite useful to you, so you make sure to encourage it even more when it happens.
"Spick an' span, innit?" He huffed with pride at his admittedly exceptional handiwork. He can be very thorough when he wants to be. "Ain't a single clump of fur left!"
Out of spite towards his arrogance, you leaned down to pick up… a single clump of fur. It's short, and of a deep purple color—my, who could it possibly belong to? His ears flatten; tail puffs up in irritation at your silent argument, and the proud smirk he had on his face quickly fades away when he realizes that his work is mediocre. "Huh?! That blasted thing wasn't there when I—!"
"Calm down," you gently chided as the hairs slowly flutter down the trash bin. "It's not that much. Besides, your work is otherwise stellar. Thank you, Heathcliff. I'm really happy to see this. How about we go out for sandwiches? I know you really like the place downtown."
Clap!
That reward was enough to get him to behave for the rest of the night. Positive reinforcement really works wonders on puppies like him.
If he does something you don't like, or if he's throwing another one of those tantrums where you know you can't reach him, you don't talk to him for a while and instead choose to sleep over at a friend's place. It's better not to lash out at him—you'd dare argue that this is actually a way of protecting him from you going to any extreme measures from an emotional outburst. Truth be told, the much more convenient route is to just move in with them and leave him behind, but since you are so kind and caring, you willingly put up with him. Aren't you the best pet owner ever?
"Heathcliff, why is the door broken… again?"
You stare in admonishment at the busted up wood barely held together by a few flimsy metal hinges, and the mess of chips and dried paint and shattered planks and whatever other rubble lying in the middle of the door(less)way. He has this really weird habit of breaking things he doesn't own that's just a little bit irritating. This is the 3rd time it has happened—it's incredible that you both managed to never get evicted.
"Ain't my fault this shite's just a wall of rubbish with a lock and key," he snorted. "It fell to pieces with a huff and puff!"
Clearly, he's exaggerating. He was just growling out curses not that long ago, does he think you're that stupid to believe him?
You sigh. "Talk to management and let them know, then. If you can, volunteer to fix it for them."
"The hell? You think me some labouring sod now?"
"…You know we'll both be kicked out if you don't."
It was tempting to actually let it happen if it wouldn't leave a nasty mark on your record. Living with him is kind of insufferable. Unfortunately, it does indeed have consequences, so you'll just have to tolerate it.
He paused, and suddenly, he looks very uncomfortable. "…We?"
Now, obviously Heathcliff is pretty used to living in less than habitable conditions. You found him in one, after all. But the thought of having to go back to that shitty wasteland of a spot, and the thought of being separated from the one person that made living easy, and the thought of accidentally trapping you in the same depravity he had to suffer for a majority of his life just because of his incompetence…
That's not a thought he likes very much.
"Yes, we. Haa… well, I'll be working overtime tomorrow then. And it's not exactly the safest for me to sleep here anymore, so I'll be at my friend's house in the meantime."
That was enough to make him fumble over his words. You're leaving him? You're walking away to someone else? You're replacing him?! No, no, he swears the whole door accident was exactly that: an accident. He didn't mean it this time. Actually, he didn't mean it ever. It was just a really unlucky series of events that brought him down this path, and this doesn't reflect anything about his character at all! He tries to argue with you on this—you don't need to worry about any intruders coming in if you have him! Do you have that little faith in his combat abilities? Oh, he'll show you what he can do. Ah, wait… actually, that'll only drive you away further. Goddamnit!!
…Wolves are social animals. They require connections to live. They need to communicate with others, exchange ideas, form close bonds, experience intimacy, and all sorts of other things that one cannot to with a single person. So what happens to someone who finally meets a person who treats them with the bare minimum level of respect and decency when no one else does? They're going to get attached to them. They're going to crave subpar affection. They're going to praise and beg for and worship mediocrity, because mediocrity is a divine blessing in comparison to their longstanding abuse. And what happens when they're told that they're too worthless to receive it? Naturally, this rabid, hungry beast is going to dig his claws into anything he can still grasp from the rock bottom where he belongs; aggressively mark his possessions should they choose to abandon him next; and stalk the streets hunt down his prey, only to release it from his fangs when he remembers that he's not good enough to be fed.
You don't come home for the next week. When he dials you with the slightest waver in his voice to tell you that he put the door back together and surprisingly paid the fee himself, you tell him that you won't see him for another week. Why? None of his business. You hang up the phone right after.
…He knows what you're planning. What's worse is that he can't even be angry at you because you are the backbone of… everything. Yes, he'll act all bratty and rude and yell at you when you make him mad, but the undeniable truth is that Heathcliff needs you to live.
With this pattern set firmly in place, he loses much of his resistance over time. He becomes malleable. Tame. Submissive, if you really wanna look at it in that light. Thankfully, this means less money goes out of your wallet in trying to pay for damages, but that doesn't mean that you're any better than you were before economically speaking. Inflation is a bitch, and so is Heathcliff during the days he slips up. And even if you notice his demeanor becoming softer, quieter, that's not going to make you let up on this regimen. Who knows if he'll regress to how he once was the moment you loosen your grip on this leash? No, that's not allowed to happen. You didn't put in that much time and trouble and money and literal tears just to watch your efforts undo itself. You need your compensation! Your investment returns! You're doing your community the biggest service by controlling his usually wayward temperament, so you're going to get what you deserve.
What you don't realize is that the tighter your hold on him is, the more erratic he grows.
Once you come home from another two weeks of distancing yourself from him, you were unexpectedly tackled to the door with a loud SLAM! Wind flees your lungs as your back meets the hard surface; a dull, rising pain emanates from the base of your skull to the sides, then the front, at the impact; and instinctively, you had to ask yourself: is this thing going to break again? God, it better not. When you open your eyes again, you are met with the sight of… guess who! Heathcliff! A very pissed, anxious, and—eh, why is his shoulder bleeding?—Heathcliff!
"Oi, don't look so gobsmacked!" He barked. "You think I'm too bloody soft in the head to know what you're doing?!"
"Huh…?"
You stare back, confused, hair disheveled from work, your uniform being pulled in all sorts of direction from god-knows-what form of corporate slavery you mill yourself into for his sake. Why is he angry at you? Shouldn't YOU be the one who's upset? He was just behaving so well, too. What shame!
"I fucking know your kind. You're just one of them cocky sods who think they can make others fit their mould? I ain't yours to toy with when you're feelin' mardy just to ditch me when I'm not useful anymore. Sorry to disappoint, but I don't care a whit for rotters like you! So piss off, and quit with the trainin' bullshite, or I'll bloody pummel you!!"
Despite his bravado, you didn't miss the subtle way his lips quivered, or how his tail hides in between his legs. After all, who's brave enough to threaten their caretaker?
"Oh, Heathcliff…" you frown, reaching out to gently clasp his cheek in your palm. His breath stills at your touch, and he sharply glares at it with an intensity that could electrocute an innocent bystander to death. "Poor thing. I didn't know you felt that way. If you hate me so much, I'm okay with you leaving me. It's nearly time to renew the lease, so… I won't stop you if you choose to run."
"That's… that's not what I was trying to say!"
He trembles against your hold, urgently grabbing your wrist to keep you steady, like he doesn't know if he wants to bite your hand or nuzzle into it. Could be both. He doesn't remember the last time anyone has touched him, nor does he remember how he should be reacting when they do. Why do you torture him in this way? Why do you talk about him leaving you like so, as if YOU'RE not always the one walking out that door with your bags packed whenever he makes a minor mistake? And why… why do you say it like you're not going to bother putting in any effort to make sure he sticks beside you at all? You're not the one scratching at the walls to make sure you have someone to talk to. You're not the one rocking yourself back and forth in a corner, constantly replaying the past week on loop to see if you'd even glanced at them wrong, while tearing apart your body just to keep your head steady. You're not the who suffers in silence every waking moment, desperate for a mere peep to reassure you that you're not alone!
"Why…" he began, "do you never yell at me?"
"Hm?"
"You don't yell. You don't scream. Shout. Bawl. Squawk. No, no, you only stow me away in this right hellhole of a playpen while you're out with your mate,"—he spits this word quite disdainfully; its double meaning isn't lost on you—"and for what? If I'm narkin' ya, tell me proper like normal folk! Smack me around if you need it! Just… goddamnit, stop treatin' me like I ain't even real…"
…Eh…? Doesn't he think he's being too greedy in asking for you to change for him? You've been nothing but kindhearted and patient, and this is how he acts? Wow… you're nowhere near as close to finishing him up as you'd originally thought. That's honestly kind of embarrassing.
"You prefer I insult you?"
"Blimey, if it'll get you to just look at me, bloody well yes!"
But there's no denying your significant progress, though. You don't think you've ever seen him in this desperate state before. He's never been so vulnerable, nor has the air between you felt so charged to where it's shocking you both physically and emotionally. So this is what he's been hiding, huh…?
…Cute. You like this side of him. You should coax him to show it more.
Gently, your thumb caresses his face, tenderly running over his scars with your fingertips. You remember that it has been about 274 days since anyone has made physical contact with him under your supervision, and that time was an accidental bump he had with a stranger on the road. He doesn't do a very good job at shutting out the massive emotional impact that your little rubs have on him either—quite satisfying.
"Thanks for trusting me with this information," you whispered. "It makes me so happy."
Happy that you manage to wrench his weakness into your arms? Eh, wouldn't put it past you. That is quite the achievement.
"Uuurrgh… gaaah…"
Due to the sensory overload, he returns to making animalistic growls and grunts, not even knowing what kind of message he wants to communicate. He just wants you go back off, but keep your hand on his face still, and to keep speaking, but not too much otherwise he'll snap, and… and…
To keep the conversation going and snap him from his daze, you added, "Also, Heathcliff… I ask that you don't call it 'training'. That's not what's happening—I'm just reciprocating behavior. If you act badly, I'm gonna act badly. And if you act good, I'm gonna act good too. If I put it like that, doesn't that sound like any standard relationship?"
Finally, he regains his voice at your audaciousness and scoffs bitterly. "There ain't a damn thing that's standard 'bout us."
"…No, there isn't. People don't usually let freeloaders into their home without expecting them to pay their half of the rent."
The fur on his body abruptly shoots up at your blunt statement. Freeloader?! He wants to deny it, but… ah, he HAS been doing that, hasn't he? No, no, he repays you. Somehow. Someway. His existence is enough to make you pleased… right? Truthfully, there's not really a way for him to excuse it. Ugh… just how expensive is he? How much has he eaten out of your bank account? How many hours of your life did you waste for his sake while he's lounging at home, whining over the smallest inconveniences like a spoiled brat? Nobody did that for him before, not even Catherine. Yet he treats you so subpar! No, you don't deserve mediocrity from him. And it's possible you said that with the intent to guilt-trip him—he wouldn't doubt it if that's the case—but… is it really guilt-tripping if it's true?
Maybe all he needed was someone to point out just how much of a burden he is to others.
"I—" he chokes out, habitually digging his claws into his waist in an attempt to ground himself. He doesn't even notice the way he's puncturing his skin, nor does he care to do anything about the blood seeping into his clothes when you're here, slapping him right across the face with the reality of your relationship. It cuts a lot deeper than any scratch of his claws.
There is no other option for him to take. This is the only way forward.

"Don't go on another bloody WARP Train."
Heathcliff was pissed.
After he had rushed you home from the station despite the majority of his work being unfinished, he couldn't stop himself from going on a long tirade about how stupid you were, how you shouldn't have gone out of the Nest, how it was a big mistake to even let you consider taking a vacation.
Granted, you two didn't have the most stable relationship nowadays. These kinds of verbal blowups weren't uncommon at all. In fact, it's much rarer to have any kind of dealings where neither of you feel like you're being held gunpoint just to breathe next to each other, and you both are very painfully aware of that fact. He asks himself why he even stays here, knowing it'll only further drain the already-waning life out of him. It would be so easy to just rip the bandaid clean, tell you to piss off, and never meet you at your apartment ever again.
Yet he doesn't have it in him to fully leave you. After your last interaction, where you tried to ask him what went wrong before he lashed out at you, where you tried to be mature and reasonable and far too good to him… well. Suffice to say that he couldn't really get that out of his mind for a while. Just the shortest glimpse of the hurt look on your face before he slammed the door behind him, the one that you always made before you were about to cry, before you schooled it back to a disdainful expression made him want to reconsider things.
He told himself that when you came back, he would sit down and talk to you proper. He will act like the adult—the man of quality—that he knows he is, and not let his emotions and stress from work get in the way of trying to figure things out, and make it up to you somehow. In hindsight, he's been giving you a lot of shit recently, hasn't he? You didn't deserve that. Sure, you were annoying a lot of the times, but if you were trying to put aside your differences for once and settle something, that must've meant you had some sliver of trust in him to reciprocate it with you. So, as much as he can't bear to hear your voice for longer than a few seconds, he decided that he will. He'll do it. He'll be there for you, just like how you tried to be there for him too.
Except that never happened.
On the day of your return, as he was trying to build up the courage and piece together the words he's always wanted to say to you during cleanup, he found your dead body. He saw how chunks of your flesh—pieces of your muscles, your bones, your intestines, your brain, your heart, your everything—splattered across the same blue-painted-red interior as he punched a gaping hole through your then-monstrous form, not realizing it was his very own love he was doing that to. He saw the pained look on your expression as he was putting your face back together again, how your eyeballs looked like they were bloodshot and swollen from panic-induced tears, and the way you just… lied there. Stilly, peacefully in contrast to the rest of your surroundings and the condition of your carcass, unaware of his presence beside you, just like how you might've always wanted it to be whenever he made you angry. What's funniest is that he can't utter a single word of this to you, even if he wanted to, because of the contract he'd signed when he began working here years ago.
How is he supposed to stay sane after that?
"Why?" Your much-more-alive voice huffed at his insistent, borderline controlling behavior, as he backed you up against the door to your bedroom. By now, you've already reached your home, with him stubbornly behind you, seething. "And how else would I get to U Corp?"
It's amazing, he thinks. You don't even remember any of it. He's jealous of your obliviousness.
"Bloody— just don't go!" He barked, "Goddamnit, you know I can't tell you why, but just… just listen to me! Don't go anywhere near a tram. Hell, don't even look at one. If ya fancied blowin' off some steam for a week, alright, but what the fuck was going through that thick skull when you bought that scrap of a ticket?!"
"I just wanted to head off somewhere—I needed a break! Why are you yelling at me? I did nothing wrong!"
"So what?! I… god! First Class too—were you off your rocker?! Are you just soddin' mental?! You don't need to go to U Corp. You don't need to go anywhere. Why'd you go on your little 'vacation' anyway?! It's all bullshite! It ain't like that place is any classier than District 23—"
"Fine! Because I wanted to get away from you! There, is that what you wanted to hear? Are you fucking happy now?!"
Finally, you said it.
Yes, he knew you were slowly beginning to hate him. The thought of that had been lingering, creeping up on him from the back of his mind, convincing him that the value of your relationship was never going to be the same as it used to be when you first met each other. He could say the same for the other way around as well. But hearing you saying—shouting—it outright kind of…
Hurt. Just a little. Not that he'd show it, but the pang in his chest he felt at your words wasn't going to be hidden by that gruff face he puts on.
"YOU—!"
Stop it. No, he had to stop. He can't degrade himself into being like the filth back at accursed manor who beat anyone who just simply looked at them wrong. He promised to himself he wouldn't lay a hand on you, no matter how much you pissed him off. Before he could do anything stupid, he let go of the doorframe beside you and pounded the wall with his fist instead. You're not fazed by it at all—he's done that in front of you multiple times when he was straining against his self-control. It only seems to make you angrier, honestly, because if he breaks it then it becomes YOUR problem.
God, he knows you're sick of him. It's been seared into his mind. It's a miracle you hadn't decided to ditch him for another man yet. But you're just so insufferable sometimes, he can't stand being around you, and it's amazing how this dysfunctional relationship has lasted as long as it has. But if he just takes a few minutes to go outside and calm down, and maybe let the cool breeze of air wash away the tension in his body from work, he could try to explain things. He just needs a breather. Yeah, he should… go do that right now. That sounds good.
"Haaah… what a headache…" he hissed, and refused to elaborate any further.
It's okay. He'll come back for you. If you could wait for him for just a little bit longer, then…!
As he abruptly turns his back to you to storm off, a scoff of yours cuts through the sounds of his labored breathing and mumbled curses. "You know what? Since you're already here, I might as well just say it. I'm breaking up with you."
Oh.
What incredible timing.
"Huh…?"
"We're breaking up."
Silence. All cognitive function in his brain stops as the words pollute the already charged air between you two.
You're leaving him? As in, like… he's not your boyfriend anymore? You're actually doing this? You're SERIOUSLY going to shut him out of your life like that? After everything? Oh god, after all of the shit you two went through together, after the WARP Train, after piecing back together your mutilated corpse with his own hands, you're just gonna…
…Alright, fine. It was bound to happen. You're the stronger one here.
"I wanted to have a proper conversation with you about this," you continued, "I truly did. But we're not going anywhere with you screaming at me every day over the most insignificant things ever! If you just told me, like any normal person would, that you were in a bad mood from work, then I would've just listened and left you alone. I tried to be patient, and I tried to be understanding, but you kept pushing me to my limit and then get surprised when I'm genuinely upset! This isn't working out, and I know that you know it too, so we're done. Get out."
He grits his teeth, so much so that he swears he could hear them beginning to chip under the force of his jaw. It's better this way. It's better this way. It really is. God, you're so infuriating! But at the same time, it's honestly his fault for not properly communicating to you… ever. So he had this coming towards him, and he's not allowed to say that he's shocked when he knew it was an inevitability, and what he should muster with the tiniest scrap of human decency he has remaining is to just simply accept it and move on.
"…Sure."
Not another noise leaves his lips as he walks out the door, and this time, he puts in a great effort to not slam it like before.
It truly is better this way. In fact, he should be happy that you decided to take the burden of announcing it from him. At least he didn't have to deal with that, and he won't have to deal with being pestered by you either, ever again.
God, he needs a pint.
Sometime later—weeks? Months? Maybe years? He doesn't know how long it was, as the events of life afterwards turned into a nonsensical blur of drinking, fighting, crying, and more drinking—he found you alive again…

Just got back from a vacation and you already need another one. Well, who's stopping you? Heathcliff, apparently.

There is something warm in bed next to you.
Very warm. Soft. Fluffy, too, but also a distinct weight and roughness that immediately gives away who it is. Heathcliff smells faintly like apples from last night's shower—ever since you taught him how to properly groom himself, he's been doing an exquisite job at it. He doesn't want you to think of him as some pitiful, dirty dog, and he makes sure of it each day. Some part of him secretly hopes you notice it too, so you will acknowledge and praise his efforts in being so good for you, and shower him with the love he'd slowly begun to crave.
A night prior, he felt lonely while trying to sleep. He doesn't like being alone very much; wolves are social animals, and it doesn't seem right to have to defy his nature for such an extensive period of time. So what did he do to solve his problem? Simple: he got out of his bed, snuck into your room after you'd already passed out, and curled up next to your form without you being awake to learn of it. You're warm, and soft, and you look very welcoming. You wouldn't mind him lying down next to you, would you? He promises he'll play nice and listen to you, so you won't be angry. That's the bare minimum he can do for you after everything you've given him, and he hopes you'll give him more opportunities like this in the future where he'll prove how well-behaved he is.
Except now is not one of those times.
Don't get him wrong, he'll still be nice, but it's been hard to control himself around you. He really doesn't like sleeping alone, but because he wasn't sure if you'd like to be with him for that, he decided it was best to lock himself in his room each night and never come bother you. Yet that's been going on for months, and he hopes you think you two are close enough to cuddle, because he couldn't wait any longer and wanted them immediately.
When your eyes shoot open at the surprise of him next to you this morning, not only did you get to see the unexpected sight of HIM of all people in bed, but also the way his torso is pressed against yours, arms—and claws, ow—tightly embracing you, legs draped over your own, and tail brushing up against your waist. He's like a leech that had finally found his food and refuses to let go! Does he realize the deathgrip he has on you even while he's asleep…?
You don't particularly mind it, but you have to go work. You gently tap his face to let him know you'd like to be freed.
"Nnnh?"
His sleep-filled grumbles are cute. When he's fully processed that yes, you two are sleeping together and you hadn't moved from your spot on bed (not that you could), a pleased little thump of his tail against you ensues, and he nuzzles further into the crook of your neck.
"Heathcliff," you began, trying to carefully remove yourself from him, "I have to go."
You're not really sure where he got this boldness from, and you wouldn't mind it if he wasn't actively stopping you from doing your daily routine. He doesn't take that very well and only tightens his hold (which should be an impossible task since he's borderline crushing you, but whatever) further.
"The hell…? Oi, quit squirming. It ain't time to go yet."
"It actually is. I need to go—"
"No. You're stayin'. Call in sick, say you've got the sniffles."
"I—"
"No."
Any will to scold him melted away when you saw the little pout forming on his face, and the way he pulled you tighter against him afterwards. He's cute when he gets clingy.
Ah, but wait. You have to reinforce to him that you're the one in charge, otherwise he will make a habit of this and never let you leave these sheets, so you put on a firm tone of voice and tried to reason with him.
"I do have to go. We can continue this later when I'm home, but not right now."
He scoffed. "No."
"I can't skip just for your sake. We're more mature than that."
"I don't give a toss. You're not going anywhere."
Your eyes narrow.
"No ear scritches, then."
This immediately caught his attention.
"Blimey—what?"
"No ear scritches."
"Bloody… y-you can't—!"
"Yes, I can. I'm not giving you rewards like that unless you're good. I'm saying just to be patient and wait—we can continue this when I get home, just not now."
His ears flatten. A low rumbling leaves his chest at your insistence; he reluctantly accepts your statement and rolls over. Finally, you can breathe! What relief!
However, now you have a very petulant and sulky Heathcliff to deal with. Leaving him be and letting him get over it on his own would be a more efficient use of your time, but… well, if he's so desperate for attention this morning, it wouldn't hurt to give him just a sliver.
You then climb on top of him—a great surprise, but it's not like he'd ever resist—and press a tiny peck on his forehead. Your little display of affection evokes a whine from him, and his ears to jump back up once more. And, seeing how much he needs this, you decided to scratch behind his ears.
His response had no delay. His tail starts happily wagging behind him, hitting the mattress at rapid intervals, and the whines and other sounds of satisfaction—ones that sound much more akin to a little puppy than a man—spill from his mouth without hesitation. It's like it's his own way of begging. He thought for a moment how easy it would be to pull you back in, but what if you stop rewarding him? That thought makes him pause, and he gets all nervous.
Ultimately, he's going to be good, and obey. It is the most surfire way of pleasing you.
For the next few minutes, he lets himself lie down wordlessly and accept the moment of bliss. He hopes you'll be on top of him like this more often, and give him your affections. When was the last time you spoiled him like this? Far too long, he daresay! He wants to make you the happiest ever, and when you're happy, you give him treats like this more often. But he can't be greedy, because when he asks for too much, you'll get mad at him, and that makes him very scared.
Not long after, you let go to prepare for the day, and he returns to missing the feeling of your body against his.
"…Be back same time, yeah?" He calls out to you, already anxious at the prospect of you leaving again. He doesn't want to be alone, not after you taught him what it means to have companionship after years of isolation.
"Maybe. I could be taking on extra hours tonight, so I'm not sure."
That large bushy tail of his puffs up at your ambiguous answer. So you don't even know? Well… it's probably not your fault, he thinks. He doesn't know what happens to you when you're away from him. So you're gonna go for some indefinite amount of hours, letting him stew in his thoughts, and not tell him what happens while you're away?
The only thing keeping his sanity together is the possibility of cuddles when you return. Oh, you'd better come home quick…!

You're alone.
The room is cold. To compensate, you wrap a heavy worn blanket around your shoulder. In any regular world obeying regular laws of physics that would've been effective, but in this one it only makes you feel colder, and that makes you a little disappointed.
This is a small bedroom. It fits: a bed. And more, but the bed is most relevant. Y'know, BEDroom. You sat on that bed, huddling underneath your pillows for warmth, hoping to simulate the feeling of a pair of arms around your body with some of your sheets. Maybe the material of that blanket was better for conducting and insulating the cold than it was for heat, so you threw it aside for now. The pillows don't work to replicate the sturdiness of muscle and bone, but it does well to reduce the shivering that would otherwise come your way.
The frigid temperatures don't bother you as much now. You like that. Oh, and you should probably put away your blankets if it's not summertime.
Somewhere next to you is Heathcliff. He also sits on that same bed, an vague and innumerable yet measurable distance away from you, with an incomprehensible expression on his face.
This is not the Heathcliff you know, but it is the one that you are most comfortable with.
He looks about the same as the man always displayed on your screen—tall, muscular, dark skin, messy hair, and scars littered everywhere on his body. Except, with one major difference: his face is unrecognizable. That is not to say that he is visually deformed, or whatever image your mind may have conjured from the connotations of this description; you just cannot make out the feelings behind the features that would be present on him. He has the same sharp pair of eyes, a nose, and a mouth fixed to a crooked sneer, like the original—it has simply now become a redundant task to decipher the meaning that they carry.
What does this mean? How can this observable phenomenon be observed in practice? To answer that question: we don't know. That is not the answer we want, but it is the most realistic one we have. If we don't even get why a blanket can transfer the cold, we're probably not going to get something much more complex like holes in human facial recognition. Assuming he's human. We also don't know about that. Oops.
But there's nothing wrong with that—you don't discriminate. You can't see the look of… what is it, repulsion? Disgust, maybe? Some emotion that would surely express a distaste towards your unruly behavior that the others wear. You won't be able to see that on him as long as you cannot register the narrowing of those eyes, or the scrunch of this nose, or the grimace of that mouth. It's quite nice, actually. You like not having to know whether or not he's judging you—if he had come to your presence of his own will, then you are surely doing something correct.
"Welcome back," you whispered. He doesn't respond—he has no comprehensible voice to speak with. You are okay with this, because it only means that you won't hear him shame you if he does so.
Sounds that you cannot begin to understand spill from his mouth at a rapid, unnatural pace. "QWxsIHJpZ2h0LCBtYXRlPyBIb3cncyBpdCBnb2luJyB3aXRoIHlvdT8gTGFzdCB0aW1lIHdlIG1ldCwgSSBhaW4ndCBzZWUgYSBmcm93biBsaWtlIHRoYXQgb24geW91ciBtdWcu"
"…Yes, it is nice to see you again."
You're used to this sort of dynamic. It is calm and familiar, much better than that of the others outside these confines. There is very little reason to change it when doing so could risk making everything worse. So you continued to question, "How have you been, Heathcliff?"
"QnVnZ2VyIGFsbCBoYXMgY2hhbmdlZCBzaW5jZSB3ZSBsYXN0IGhhZCBhIGNoaW53YWcuIEkgYWluJ3QgYXNraW4nIGFnYWluOiB5b3UgYWxsIHJpZ2h0Pw==" He spat.
"I've been… okay," you sighed. "I've seen better, but this isn't the worst it has gotten. I'm just tired."
Silence. You can't tell if he's thinking, or if he just decided to ignore you because your response wasn't interesting enough. Maybe he needs an extra nudge in the conversation to guide him? You really hope you're not being annoying. It kind of would be nice to know his expression, but if you did, then you might be met with a sort of face you really wouldn't like to see aimed at you. That wouldn't be good at all. Just keep talking…
"I've just been scared. I don't trust the people I love, nor do I trust the people who love me."
"Mmm… it's whatever, though. I don't think it's anything, like… malignant. I hope. It's just hard having to act like I don't secretly wonder if they all are going to leave me one day just because I'm not good enough for them, but if I show that too often, they'll get this idea that I'm paranoid and suddenly I have to be babied, or treated like I'm a bomb that could explode at any moment. Then, if they didn't already think so, that'll REALLY prove I'm not good enough for them. I tell myself, 'well, if they really hated me, they'd have already left me,' to make it all better, but you know how people are when they don't care enough to even try to talk to you properly. Or maybe they're one of those people who can't handle anything they think is confrontation out of fear of a fight, even if it really does help both parties grow closer at the end. I don't know. Too tiring. Trying to learn how to people is hard."
…
"You'll definitely rant to me about her," TGlsb3U= said, pointing to a woman on the front cover of a novel that they didn't know you liked. "She's so annoying. I threw the book when I first read it."
"I think you're too calm about TGF1cmVu leaving," RXVuYWNl said, referring to a person who you were close with, that you felt—and have been feeling—nothing towards when they disappeared. "Maybe it just hadn't processed in your mind yet. I'll start seeing the tears later."
"Isn't U29sYWNl so hot?" RW1yeXM= said, showing you an image of a video game character that you secretly thought was repulsive. "You'd love him. He's for sure your type. Tell me, tell me; you'll scream and cry for him like you do for that other man, won't you?"
These people were talking to nothing more than the mirror that they painted their own reflection over. What brand new connection is there to make between one single person? What sorry excuse of a bridge did you and these people build when it only loops back to where it came from? It's an insult to relationships, and an insult to intimacy.
"Oh. Um… thanks for the encouragement, Heathcliff. I hadn't thought of it in that way."
At least you hoped whatever he was saying was encouragement. It's pretty hard to tell with the, uh… thing going on.
Anyway, the moon is beginning to set. You worry that this will be your last time speaking with him in any casual(?) manner in the foreseeable future, so you want to be able to wrap up this conversation(??) as nicely as you could so that it ends on a smooth and neat note.
"Before you go," you paused, taking a second to mull over your words, before hesitantly adding, "and in case I needed to say this, I don't hate you. Genuinely—you're a good person. I'm sorry if I ever treated you badly."
You reach out for him. Just when you think you'd be able to miraculously meet the tips of his fingers with your own, he dissipates into thin air, and you're left sitting there wondering if you did nothing but make yourself look like some idiot, with the grand audience too being nobody more than your own self. Everyone must think you're crazy if they knew you were openly indulging such ridiculous fantasies. They're going to shame you, just like before. They will never listen to you—they must already think you're stupid, and insane, and worthless. But to what basis do they have to judge when anyone would naturally go insane in a world that is inherently absurd? Why do we condemn others for their irrationalities—but only the ones that we did not cherrypick into thinking were socially acceptable—when humans were never rational creatures?
It hurts. Everything hurts. Please help me.
"…I wish I was brave enough to tell this to them, Heathcliff," you kept mumbling to yourself, "I wish I was who I pretended to be."
The room is so cold. So, so unbearably cold. No amount of blankets or pillows you throw on yourself will replicate the human warmth you wished you held, yet feared to reach for.
The ghost of Heathcliff, no matter how haunting, would always be safer than the impossibly fearsome and complex and real people that swarm your daily life.
To love... what does that mean? Can you tell me what you think?

"Heathcliff. Heathcliff, Heathcliff. Can you lift up your foot, please?"
The two of you sit alone, together; close, far; distance! Distance? Distance, distance. Such is an arbitary term to label a subjective concept. Surrounding—encircling, borderline embracing—your bodies are many little blades of grass, and the whirling wind of an autumn day, and the UV rays of the sun which slowly eats away at your DNA, and the atoms beneath that, and the little quarks beneath THAT, and whatever other strange matter composes you, and your person of interest, and the mysterious and infinitely expanding universe around you. Such is the beauty of breathing long enough to witness the world forming, building, living lives of our own despite being made of dead things.
Whatever could "you" possibly mean? To whom does that refer to—me? You? The vessels in which our minds were transported within without any of our will, forcibly given the capacity to suffer no matter what form of living we take? Should we be humans, or rabid dogs foaming at the mouth, or roaches, or fish in the sea, or the indestructible tardigrades, are we still ourselves now that we've had the taste of our current level of consciousness?
"Lift up your foot, Heathcliff."
You frown when he scoffs at your demand and petulantly crosses his arms in a very Heathcliff-like manner. Of course he would do that. That's very Heathcliff of him.
"[british equivalent of haha screw you]" He spat.
"Why would you say that? That's mean," you commented. "My girlfriend is underneath your foot. Please lift it."
He refuses. Instead, just to provoke you further, he rises to his feet and smushes the contents under his shoes against the ground. You hear the faint sound of bones being crushed and flesh twisting under his soles—surely nothing pleasant at all. Before you could scream, or yell, or mourn the loss of your beloved, a strong gust of air blows him up to the tree and knocks him right up to a branch that is three Don Quixotes tall. That's what he gets for being short.
"BLOODY HELL—!!" He shrieked, cursing at the unpredictable nature of the world despite having lived long enough to know that he should never expect things to always go his way. Loser. You tap dance and shake ass on his tombstone, automatically winning the dance battle against an inanimate object. That's a few worlds away from you, though, so you had to learn how to teleport first. Meow.
You look for your girlfriend that was under his foot. Where he formerly was, and what has now taken the positional space and time that he has once taken, appears to be five jelly beans. They are bubblegum flavored, except that bubblegum usually comes in a variety of flavors, so you don't know what they actually taste like besides a descriptor that you were given from a company that thinks it knows better about sensory input than you.
But that is very much your girlfriend. You smile knowing that it still exists, and that it has yet to be disintegrated to the inevitable erosion of our universe—so long as someone carries the memory of it, it will continue to live in the minds of others, even if it does not have a physical embodiment.
"OI!! DAMN THAT BASTARDLY GUST!!! THE HELL'D IT COME FROM?!" Continued Heathcliff, breaking you from your jelly bean-induced reverie.
"Stop cussing out the wind. That's rude. Have you ever considered that it has feelings too?"
You pluck a banana growing from the many blades of grass. Thankfully, those blades are too dull to cut you. It would be very bad if Heathcliff fell on them and broke his leg, because you need him to drive his car and give you passenger princess treatment.
"I ate 46 candles as a child," you stated as you peel open the banana. It is very yellow, and the insides are as white as wax. "This is my 47th."
"I don't give a toss about your bananas!!"
You raise an eyebrow at his strange choice of words. "It's not like you could anyway. It's physically impossible to give tosses in the context that you use it in."
"THAT WAS A FIGURE OF SPEECH!!!"
"Speech also does not have figures unless you are referring to the soundwaves that our voiceboxes create."
Heathcliff's eye twitches, and you notice his grip on the branch tightening considerably. He looks like an angry can of sardines. Oh, that doesn't make sense? Neither does the rest of our reality. Have you ever woken up one day and flinched—gaped—at the sheer complexity of your own hand? I have. And the average human has two of them! How many years of evolution did it take to develop the musculature of a shoulder, and the structural bone mass underneath it, then the strands of flesh that extends towards your elbow, the intricate little nerves that activate movement for them, then your wrist, the meat of your palms, and each individual finger? Science never killed magic—it is the magic.
Everything will be okay one day. We don't need to define happiness to experience it.
Did you know Heathcliff is from the transatlantic slave trade? It was not explicitly stated in Wuthering Heights, but the novel takes place in the late 1700s and ends in around 1801. Heathcliff is a child found in Liverpool, speaking "some gibberish", and Liverpool was known for its involvement in the slave trade up until 1807. One of the derogatory names he is called also refer to a Spanish or American castaway. One of Nelly's dialogues to him also implies something very interesting—"You're fit for a prince in disguise. Who knows but your father was Emperor of China, and your mother an Indian queen, each of them able to buy up, with one week's income, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange together? And you were kidnapped by wicked sailors and brought to England." Notice how she brings up Asians specifically, and keeps the part where he was forcibly stripped of his prior nationality, much like actual slaves. This is also when trade between Britian and China for opium was growing, and Emily Bronte also published Wuthering Heights after the first opium war. I am curious to see if this use of historical context was intentional, since we know that the book already contains very political themes for its time.
"I like bananas," you commented as you chew on what others perceive to be a fruit. "They are good."
Heathcliff does not miss the way you focus on the banana more than him. Is the worth of any human being determined by their usefulness to others? He doesn't think so, but your nonchalance makes him a little bit sad, reflected on the intonation and marginal instability of his voice. "…Ya ain't gonna lend me a hand? Come on, mate…"
"I'm not responsible for your wellbeing."
…Yeah, that's right. You're not. It's pathetic of him to ask for help for a problem he could figure out on his own if he chose to put in the effort to do so. What a stupid thing to do. No wonder why you're sick of him.
"However!" You chimed in, before tossing up the peel of the banana. Springing from it is a long, sturdy rope, made from the fibers of grass where it originates from. "Even if it is not my responsibility, it is my pleasure. That is what truly makes any endeavor more valuable."
"Ah…! Cheers, mate."
You clear your throat as he climbs down.
"The acceleration vector of a particle moving in the xy-plane is given by a(t) = <2, 3>. When t = 0 the velocity vector is <3, 1> and the position vector is <1, 5>. Find the position when time t = 2."
"5 mangoes wide."
"Correct."
When Heathcliff plants his feet against the floor grass, the universe inverts itself and gravity spirals upwards (but is really still downwards), so you both fall to the underside of a branch just like before. His cussing of the natural elements returns. You are simply grateful the world didn't collapse into the sky, and then beyond that.
"We should stay until everything flips itself again," you suggested. He ignores you and continues angrily ranting about how stupid it all is. You lightly smack his arm to get his attention, and continued almost indignantly (but really you just wanted him to be quiet), "Don't expect things to act in a particular way just because you're used to them being in that way! Who are we to think the sun will rise again tomorrow, and why! Just because it's done that before? How can you trust that the rules of our galaxy will remain according to the way people decide them to? How can you trust that this tree will not disintegrate right here, and watch as invisible forces that define our lives, yet remain ungraspable despite their effects being tangible in everyone's perception of reality, drag us to our demise?! You can't! If you are going to put that much effort in complaining, how about you also try to do something to help yourself too?!"
Is there any point in trying to add logical reasoning to things that are inherently absurd? Can we take that same idea and apply it to humans, who are also fundamentally illogical beings?
"Hypocrite! Minging hypocrite!" He scowls, "You pull out those posh and fancy words from your arse as if you're gonna do anything for us either!"
"There is nothing posh nor fancy about trying to grasp for an inch of space in a world that constantly rearranges itself! You should know this better than anyone else! Now, lift your foot, Heathcliff. You are stepping on something very important."
He looks like he wants to insult you further, but reluctantly holds his tongue, and finally complies with your request. As he raises his leg to inspect whatever strange mass has decided to manifest itself, you sit down onto that branch and knock him over so that he's following suit.
"Tch—! Ya didn't have to do that! There wasn't anything 'neath me, anyway—"
"No, that's not true. There was nothing."
You and your cryptic speech! He's had about enough with you! But you already knew that, and he never had any amount of you anyway, for your time with him is constantly fleeting, surrendering to whatever defines the boundary between now and the past.
"Nothingness is important too," you continued, reaching for his hand to rub it reassuringly, "it gives an opportunity for the somethings in our lives to shine further. Let's focus on the present—it is all that we have."
Heathcliff frowns at your affectionate gesture, but does not retract himself from you. Does this physical closeness make up for the emotional distance? And if it doesn't, does he want that to tarnish this moment? Eventually the world will flip again, and you two will fall onto your heads, and he will cuss at nature once more, and you will laugh at—or maybe with—him.
Perhaps he doesn't mind it, as long as your voice lets him know you haven't disappeared to the mysterious functions of life yet. He lets out an exhausted sigh and begrudgingly leans a little bit closer to you. "If you're gonna babble on and on about the vitalness of the instant or some shite, at least don't bloody nick it away from me."
"Why would I? I share this time as much as you do."
You finish your banana and drop it into the sea of clouds under where you and him sit.
What a nonsensical thing! But does its lack of comprehensibility dismiss it when we live in an equally confusing realm ourselves? If it's going to keep being like this, then some part of Heathcliff hopes it never ends with you.
