I am constantly astounded by how many events and small details that occur seemingly innocuously in season 1 come back to bear significance later in the series. It makes me appreciate season 1 so much more to think that the writers planted all these tiny seeds and nuggets of information so early on. I feel like I spot something new each time so sorry if this has already been done, I know I’m certainly no the first to spot these, I just felt like putting them all together in no particular order.

1. In 1.01, Billy claims that there are no kings in Nassau and is skeptical of the idea of a king. He goes on to crown Silver ‘King’ in 3.10.

2. Captain Hume has a long rambling speech about shame being the root of civilisation in 1.01. As we all know ‘knowing no shame’ becomes a huge theme later on and a plays a big part in James’ story and the formation of Captain Flint.

3. In 1.05/1.06 Mr. Scott betrays Eleanor’s trust in an attempt to save her from the danger presented by the pirates gaining the Andromache’s guns, going on to refuse to help the slaves at a chance at freedom - (when pressed he does go back on this decision). In 4.10 Silver makes a similar decision that he believes will keep Madi and Flint safe, regardless of their own wishes, the freedom of slaves or the principal of waging war against England. Both cite that they ‘don’t care’ that they would choose one person over many.

1. In 1.02 Mr. Gates correctly assumes Max and Silver will want to trade in jewels rather than gold because it is easier to keep safe and hidden. It’s never said if it was Max or Silver who thought of the idea, but later in 3.02 Max proposes the same method in order to keep the Urca gold safe and easy to move around in the event of an invasion.

2. In 1.08 Vane gets to the heart of what’s bothering Eleanor, that she’s being tired of being controlled by men (aside: in 1.07 Eleanor remarks that he life doesn’t belong to the men around her as well). In 4.05 after hearing about Mr. Scott’s double life she re-affirms this, tired of always feeling like men are trying to manipulate her will to their benefit.

3. Billy falls/is pushed by Flint off the side of the Walrus in 1.06. In an almost poetic fashion Flint outright pushes Billy off the Lion’s/the Eurydice’s rigging during their final confrontation in 4.10.

When Flint and I are of the same mind, there’s no obstacle yet encountered that we cannot surmount. I don’t know why that is, he doesn’t know why it is. But it is.
