Building structure in an essay
Essays are usually parts of examinations in particular subjects in high school and undergraduate classes. To write an essay is to discuss concepts or relate lessons in a meaningful way through “written words.” Instructors (or readers in general) expect students (or writers) to show their own understanding and appreciation of the subject matter using their “own” words. The challenge in writing essays is to connect not only the words but also the ideas that comprise the output. Here, I want to give some preliminary points in writing essays with a special focus on building structure. This is just a guideline and does not suggest comprehensiveness.
1. Introduction. In writing essay, creativity and brevity must be balanced. You have to introduce what you are writing and why it is relevant to the question at hand. Introduction must not be too colorful (with your own experiences or anecdotal references) but must not be boring or dry either (with technical words) as to intimidate potential readers. The goal of the introduction is to “introduce” your topic, argument, or problem. It must be stated as simple as possible for clarity.
(Example of introductory sentence: This essay will discuss the relationship of family values to the formation of political attitudes).
2. Body. The body contains the supporting details, reasoning, and main concepts of your main argument. One can say that an ideal body of an essay proceeds from one idea to another. The body is where you expand your discussion. The key to writing a good body is to arrange your ideas from general to specific (or vice versa). If your discussing your main argument in your body, it will be helpful to include even the counter-argument to your main position to avoid being one-sided. Make sure that you are using proper transition words and phrases. These words ensure the structure of your sentences. These phrases direct your readers’ attention to your general story (whether you are supporting, adding, or challenging an idea). In the body, clarify the meaning of your concepts and be explicit about your source of definitions.
3. Conclusion. Concluding your essay means “going back home.” Your concluding paragraph must respond to your main idea (or question) from your introduction. After reasoning with your readers, you can conclude your essay by restating your introduction using a different wording. You must briefly restate the purpose of your essay. You can also highlight the most important ideas that they can take away from your output.
(Example of concluding sentence: To end, this essay argues that specific family values affect particular political attitudes). In writing essays, they key is to be explicit and direct. Use words wisely and express your ideas clearly.
