I sometimes think about how Barry's mom being dead and his dad being in jail (or dead) is a fairly recent retcon that took place just before the N52 relaunch. Before the retcon, they both were very much alive and well. They appeared on a regular basis throughout the silver and bronze age, and even post-crisis they were shown to be alive.

They also knew that Barry was The Flash.

Anyway where I am getting with this is that during the entirety of the time that Bart Allen was living with Max, then Jay and Joan, he never once met them, and there was no indication that anyone even revealed to him that he had other family in the 20th century. They were not unknown characters either, they did however not know that Iris was alive (which when she published her book under her own name probably would have gotten a lot of questions).

It is an interesting detail that I haven't seen too many people bring up in the Flash fandom - that Barry's parents could have feasibly had a relationship with Bart but they never did. They also could have possibly taken him in as they were not decrepit in age, they were about Jay and Joan's age.

I feel like the whole in-universe conversation about them in regards to Iris coming back to life with Bart in tow was a missed opportunity. I realize that the main explanation why this never happened is entirely because the writers at the time simply had no desire to bring them into the picture, but it's still worth talking about.

In a more realistic setting Nora and Henry Allen would be fully entitled to feeling alienated that they were left out of the conversation entirely and were prevented from having a relationship with their great-grandson. They also would have the ability to sue for visitation rights, or even custody, if they wanted to.

It just compels me more and adds yet another layer of tragedy to Bart's sense of family and home, and his inability to live with blood family even while they were present.

imagine barry growing up as a (oh-so-obviously) neurodivergent kid who's a massive nerd, and the kinds of bullying and teasing he got not only from jerks at school but his own friends, iris included

imagine how his interests, from science to the supernatural, or dismissed or ignored unless they somehow benefit the people around him, today

imagine him spending his entire adolescence and young adulthood apologizing for everything. for being late, for not being neurotypical enough, for not begin "properly professional" (which is the same issue as the previous one but no one likes to talk about it), for being too fast, too needy, to nerdy, too passionate, too driven. for caring too much

imagine henry allen seeing how his son is developing from the other side of the glass. imagine the grief he feels for the parts of himself his son is starting to lose due to the judgement of others

imagine henry, being out of prison, and seeing barry and leonard snart interacting for the first time. joe and iris are extremely disapproving of their relationship. but henry is not. and barry can Tell that he isn't. that he supports this. he just doesn't know why

the reason why is simple: the entire time leonard snart was in the room, barry didn't feel the need to apologize to anyone for existing the way he is

Iris haters in 2025 really do come up with the most bizarre things to hate her for (while also pretending the show is forcing them to hate her or something. No, it’s not)

“She stole Henry’s moment! He was going to hug Barry when they saved him from the Speed Force!” Oh I’m sorry, I forgot Henry was the only one broken up about Barry going into the Speed Force! I’m sure you would’ve hated Joe if he’d been the one hugging Barry in Iris’s exact situation, right?

Also like…Henry could’ve still hugged Barry right afterwards. Or right before, when he turns Barry around and just stares at him for a few moments. The scene doesn’t let him, but that isn't Iris’s fault. That’s on the writers (and I do in fact hate that they didn’t let Henry hug Barry in that scene, that was wild af. But the difference is, I know who to actually blame!).

“Henry was gonna die later that season! Iris is so selfish!” So first of all, Iris does not have the power to read the script. She doesn’t know Henry is going to die. In fact, none of the characters do (except, one could argue, Zoom)! SECOND of all, Henry would not even be back at all if not for Iris, so put some mf respect on her name. If not for her, Zoom would’ve still killed Henry, but Barry's last memory of him would be Henry leaving. But sure, Iris “stole” Henry’s moment with Barry and is sooo selfish for it. Sure.

(“Oh but Lavi! Iris only brought Henry back temporarily in 2x07, then Barry brought Henry back later in 2x20!” Right, but Iris bringing Henry back in the first place is significant. Look at the sequence of events: Henry convinced Barry to let him leave in 2x01. Then Iris brought him back in 2x07 when Barry was at his lowest after being paralyzed (she knew that he needed his dad, because she loves him and understands the importance of the bond Barry & Henry have). You can’t tell me that Barry didn't remember that in 2x20, when he was at his lowest again, and think “I need my dad again.” Iris did that for him the first time, and that’s part of what inspired Barry to try again to convince his dad to come back/stay. The parallels are clear—in both cases, Henry was brought back to help Barry, and Iris did that first. You can see it in his gratitude and love for her in 2x07…you can see it in his decision to ask Henry to come back in 2x20)

Like...be so fr. Using this to make a “Westallen is forced” argument (because apparently the hug “had no meaning behind it”?? What?? She is his CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND and LONGTIME CRUSH, wdym??) is even worse, like...what are y’all on.

this is almost a welcome distraction. if the world weren't at stake, i'd be recording and studying everything. we could be rewriting every history book. instead, i'm fighting for a way to sign my own death certificate. and yet, weirdly… i don't feel so bad. one life… my life… against millions. i can live with that. it almost feels like… i was destined to make this choice. somehow. someday. like i was meant to be here for a crisis like this, somehow. i'm okay with it. i'm ready. i'm going to miss iris, though. and ice cream. and polar bears.

the only control we have in life is in the choices we make. however small, each action has a consequence. and while we can't steer the outcome of every possibility… we can nudge the world in the right direction. at least, that's what i'm going to keep trying to do.
