Endless Herb Boxes

My entry for Spoonflower’s Vegetable & Herb Gardens contest! This is my first time entering a Spoonflower contest, and I’m amazed at how much attention I’m already getting as a first-time entrant. Thank you, Spoonflower community, for being so welcoming!

I was inspired by the many, many box gardens I see around my neighborhood. My city used to be full of ranches, orchards, and farms- and many of them still exist- so we have a strong culture of growing our own food. I wanted to pay a little tribute to that. Also, I didn’t see a lot of patterns with herb boxes! That surprised me, given how common they are in both rural and urban homes.

Herb Kit In The Shop!

This lovely little herb kit comes with a metal spoon, an information card, and 15 useful herbs:

a progression of my herb box! (also sunny day vs cloudy day, so do take that into account)

you could barely see the basil in the first pic and look how much it’s grown! it used to be even taller but i clipped a little off to make a salad (which was delicious) i am a little concerned about the mint? but the leaves seem strong? are the stems supposed to darken like that?

also check out how big the thyme has gotten (far left) and how tall the rosemary is now

also, no pics, but the little rose plant opened another bud today so?? i think that’s a good sign??? it’s so cute and i love it a lot so i hope it survives.

And it was in this moment that I knew that the Oregano was here to take over, it was only just a matter of Thyme.

But omg seriously, look at the Thyme!

I didn’t start this 2013 season with much in the herb box. The Oregano and Thyme survived the winter, above ground, in the box, as well as the chives. This was my first year planting Chamomile (close left corner hugging the aloe’s pot). And boy, do I miss walking out into the garden and smelling this Chamomile plant, absolutely amazing. Later on, in the summer I relocated the aloe vera, and Agnes (my dog) made a nice little treat out of it. I also relocated the lemon balm (middle) to a front yard flower bed where it flourished. The venus flytrap (front center) hung out in the herb box for the stretch of the summer.

This was my first-year herb box. My dad had crafted this standing box for me, above ground back in 2012, it still stands today. Thyme, Basil, Garlic Chives, and Regular Chives (back, left to right). Hot Oregano, Oregano, Moss Curled Parsley, Italian Flat Leaf Parsley (front, left to right). I used a mixture of peat moss and compost for the soil. The chives are still going strong today in the same corner (I’m thinking about removing it and splitting the plant up to put in various areas of the garden.)
