Lords of the Fallen by Fred Rambaud #1
In his travels through this strange new world, Geralt has met many a number of interesting individuals.
The follower of Adyr, Damarose, warns him against the lamp. She says her god offers freedom... But Geralt already knows that what gods consider freedom is often far from the real deal.
Andreas of Ebb, a rather pompous douche. Geralt has only just met the man and he already cannot stand him. Not in the way he cannot stand Jaskier, nah, moreso the way he cannot stand the stench of a zeugl. He chuckled to himself that if Yennefer were here she would have simply pushed him off the cliff's edge and been done with it. But alas Geralt has to eat and this man seems to have coin. Perhaps in the future the two can work out a loathsome deal.
And most recently he has met Kukajin. After freeing the swordstress-for-hire from a cursed pendant Geralt found himself feeling strong nostalgia for his beloved Ciri. This young, strapping lass has offered her aid to Geralt, for a price, but of course he is all too used to the trade of coin for service. Typically more of a loner he would normally reject any helping hand, but he can't help be drawn to her aura and how much she reminds him of his daughter. In such a foreign land, any light in the dim darkness of Umbral is worth a little trouble.
The head of Hexworks (Saul) and the Lords of the Fallen art director (Alex) did a livestream on Discord where they took community suggestions for a new armor set and talked about the art/design process for the game! I took some notes on interesting stuff they talked about:
An important aspect of the Rhogar enemies is how they derive pleasure through pain, and that’s part of the inspiration for the twisted smile motif and how some of them wear clothes made of human flesh
The smile aspect was also inspired by the Joker from the Batman comics, specifically the Batman who Laughs, if I recall correctly
The Dark Crusader design was also inspired by Batman himself, in contrast
The Umbral realm was inspired by HP Lovecraft-style cosmic horror. Paraphrased quote about their thought process while designing Umbral: “what are gonna be the nightmares of people who already live in a nightmarish world?”
Other inspirations behind Umbral include the art of HR Giger, Zdzisław Beksiński, and Olivier de Sazagan
Under the cut (for the sake of those who don’t want spoilers) is Alex Chaudret’s work-in-progress design we ended up with during the stream!
