Even though we are in the winter months, the setting of this experience took place during the summer. I suppose the subconscious does not distinguish what season to display. Well, the full setting looked like a typical summer’s day on the block from the eyes of how I saw it during my teens. I was in a car, it looked like the first car that I owned, but instead of being a Ford, it was a Honda. It…

Happy Birthday to sweet, kind, handsome and talented Mr Peter Lawford, shown here with the always amazing and unflappable Jimmy Durante, who took Peter under his wing when he needed it most.
Here the gentlemen vie for best place, (second from the right), via a dance competition. Because, after all, ‘all the girls like the boy second from the right’.
Happy Birthday Peter 🌼

BJJ Class
Early Tuesday morning class with Keith. After warm-ups we partnered up and drilled a hip throw:
Start facing your opponent with your right hand on his lapel, left on his elbow.
Step your right foot in towards his right, your left foot in toward his left so that your feet are pretty close together and your back is to him. As you step in, lift the left a little as you snake your right hand under his arm and around his back.
Bend down and stick your hip out so you pick your opponent up, resting on your back.
Pull his left arm over as your turn your right arm across his body, dumping him on the ground in front of you, making sure to keep a hold of the left arm.
Keeping his right arm wrapped up, place your right knee on his ribs to pin him in place.
Slide your right palm over his extended shoulder, rolling it toward the same direction his head is facing, as you hook the left arm around his triceps, then grab your right wrist with your left hand to lock in the figure four.
Simply rotate your wrists forward to apply the pressure and get the tap.
There’s a slight variation where you can fall back into a lying arm bar if you don’t get opp’s arm wrapped up in your left. All you’d do differently is lie back and throw your left leg over opp’s face to lock it in.
Then we did some really helpful flow drills to practice sweeps and moving between different positions:
Start standing in front of opponent on his back, grab knees and do a bullfighter pass to knee-on-belly.
Slide your knee over to a mount.
Let opp oompa you over so he’s in your guard, then let him stand up.
Grab both opp’s ankles, and push both feet against his hips to sweep.
Stand up and repeat steps 1–3.
Grab both opp’s ankles again, but this time he grabs your lapels to counter the sweep. Move your grips to his sleeves and pick him up with your feet. Bring him over your head and sweep back so you’re mounted on opp again.
Repeat steps 3–5.
Grab both opp’s ankles again, but this time he steps back with one foot to counter.
Roll to your right hip and place your left foot on opp’s left hip crease as right knee bends so you can push his rear foot with your right. Push down to sickle sweep.
After that we modified the over-the-head sweep to practice the helicopter arm bar:
Start with your feet on opp’s hips, gripping both sleeves by the triceps.
Like you’re turning a bus wheel to the left, rotate your opp so his head is at 10:00.
As you’re turning pull out your left leg so opp tumbles down and keep a grip on his right sleeve as you place your left leg over his head for the lying arm bar finish.
Lots of great stuff here - those flow drills are so helpful in understanding the transitions between positions and reinforcing some basic sweeps. The helicopter arm bar was much simpler than it seemed and gave us this kernel of advice from Keith: “Drive the bus, don’t milk the cow.” Sage advice for that specific technique and for life in general, I think.
