In the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, Seville, Spain, is this venerable specimen of Phytolacca dioica (ombú) which according to the tradition was planted five hundred years ago by the son of Christopher Columbus, Hernando. This large evergreen tree is native to the pampa of South America. In the U.K. we tend to know the garden cultivated, herbaceous perennial relative Phytolacca americana (American pokeweed).

This week’s puzzle is a less frequently seen back view of the house.
