Do you have any tactical RPG recommendations for someone who really liked Advance Wars and wants to play more games in that vein?

Based on my library, the Tiny Metal series isn’t a bad choice, though it has the issue of being so true to its inspirations that it fails to bring anything new to the table – you might not find much that grabs you here if you’ve already played the Advance Wars games extensively. Wargroove has more novelty (and a much better user interface), though it suffers from lacklustre enemy AI; the big draw here is the full-featured campaign editor. Into the Breach might also fit the bill if you don’t mind that it’s much more a roguelike than it is an RPG.

What genre is it where the trappings are typical of transhumanist sci-fi(one person has several robot-y bits that they're perfectly happy with, and another is just constantly swapping out their body for something new every week and right now they're a squid), but the majority of the story's structure and plot is, like, standard pulp adventure stuff?

It’s tempting to quibble about classifications there, but ultimately I think it still ends up in the “transhuman SF” bin, in much the same way that any story where the bad guys wear three-piece suits and the good guys go inside computers ends up in the “cyberpunk” bin even if it doesn’t address any actual cyberpunk themes. “X as a literary aesthetic” isn’t tidily separable from “X as a substantive theme”, especially when dealing with very broad categories.

You got any RPGs well-suited for, say, playing as sad lesbians dating and talking about their trauma, which happens to go well with a generic 90s-era superhero milieu that, presumably, the lesbians are active participants in, off-screen?

That’s an awfully specific brief -- is there a particular source you’re trying to emulate here?

In any event, if by “generic 90s era” you mean “grimdark”, you might have a look at Rose Bailey’s Die For You. Its really more of a “Friends meets Vampire: The Masquerade“ deal, but grimdark 90s supers isn’t really all that far off from V:tM’s idiom -- adapting it wouldn’t take much work.

You've mentioned Genius: The Transgression on your blog before, and having looked at it, I noticed you were credited in the book in the "Special Thanks To" section. Do you mind telling us what sort of contributions you made?

It’s been long enough that I don’t rightly recall. I was a member of the forum where most of the initial brainstorming happened, and I believe I may have offered some minor critiques of the rules for Orphaned Wonders, but beyond that I really couldn’t say.

Do you happen to know a system that's focused heavily on exploring a dungeon but with as little combat as possible, or, even better, no combat at all? Preferably with player abilities that mainly deal with movement and manipulating the environment? I know really old-school D&D is kinda close to what I'm asking for, but even that's way too combat-heavy for me.

To be 100% clear, when you say “no combat”, do you mean no fighting, or do you mean no physical peril whatsoever? (e.g., getting hurt by falling of a cliff, or whatever.)
