HR Wells (Flash) - Chapter 4
The heart to heart with HR has given you confidence you need to do something you should have from the moment you’d gotten away from Eobard. Confide in your friends. Now with them all standing in the cortex, you take a seat.
“I asked you guys to come because I..” You need to gather your thoughts.
“I want to tell you what happened. “ They all seem to know exactly what it is you mean.
“Dr. We…Eoabrd.” You correct yourself.
“He took me because he was…he..he said that he’d gained feelings for me.” Barry doesn’t see that coming.
“Before it all happened, I did care about him. Well I guess I cared about the man I thought he was. He thought that if I was away from you all that he could influence me, persuade me to switch sides. He wanted me to betray you all and be with him.” You’re messing with your fingers, it’s the only distraction you have.
“I refused and so he drove his hand into my gut.”
You press a hand to your stomach. Barry takes a step, but you raise your head, shaking it. You need to get this out. Because there’s a chance you’d never have the courage to do this again.
"He thought I was dead, and I pretended to be. Held on for as long as I could. We weren’t that far from a town, so the second I realized he wasn’t coming back, I dragged myself to the window and left a message there. I couldn’t make it outside. I was lucky enough that the building I was in was somewhere high schoolers like to mess around in. Someone found me. I survived, but even if I didn’t I just…I wanted you guys to know…” You sob, and it pulls at Barry’s heart. Caitlin puts a hand over her lips to stop them from quivering.
“I-I wanted you to know that I would never..would never…” Barry rushed forward, pulling you into his arms and you cried. Harry and the others watch as you practically bawl your eyes out.
“We know.” Barry responds.
“We know.” You bury your face in his chest, for once not worried about how strong you looked.
The events of that day have laid heavy on everyone’s heart.
“Knock knock.” You smile as HR enters the speed lab. You’re sitting at the stairs.
“You know if you knock you don’t have to say the words. “
“Where’s the fun in that?” He starts strumming his drum sticks against the railing. You lean forward, enjoying the crazy personality that is HR Wells.
“So I was thinking, since you’re super swift and fighty, how about you teach me a couple moves.” He swings the sticks in his hand, right before he tucks it into his pocket.
“You want to learn to fight?”
“Sure. The lab is always under attack. What’s one more warrior am I right?” He does little air punches, and you chuckle.
“I guess I could start training you, but you need to be focused HR. No messing around. “
“When have I ever messed around?” You quirk an eyebrow.
“Point taken, see you bright and early tomorrow!” He’s dashing off, and you laugh.
“He's such a child.”
It’s a refreshing change, especially now. Maybe HR is what you need to trust again. Not just your friends, but yourself. Harry is the one that strolls through the entrance.
“Why was that moron in such a hurry?”
“He wants to learn how to fight.” You reply.
“Great, now we’ll have to HR proof everything. He’s like a walking bomb.” Harry’s annoyance is fun to watch sometimes. You lean back, letting out a breath. Harry’s eyes settle on you.
“I know why you became a bounty hunter.” You tune back in, eyes shifting to him.
“It made sense. Eobard took that power from you.” Now, you can’t seem to look at him. Leave it to Harry to figure it out.
“Barry's never told me what you were like before, nor has Cisco, but I saw a video. One with the four of you. I saw a side of you I’d never seen before. When he took you that day you changed, and it made you tough. You picked that job because you wanted to catch criminals and help people, the way you had hoped someone would have helped you when he took you. “
Harry sees the tears that are now running down your cheeks, and you don’t wipe them away. You’d spent too many days keeping it all inside. Pretending that you were okay. That he hadn’t left something broken inside you all those years ago.
“He took away the innocence and faith I had. I couldn’t see the good in anyone for so long. I couldn’t date or bond with anyone because I kept waiting for that other shoe to drop. I’ve been trapped in that time. “
“You aren’t anymore.”
You want to believe it, you really do. When Harry takes a seat next to you, he pulls you into his side.
“You’re one of the few people I can tolerate on this earth. Hell will freeze over before I let something happen to you.” You lean your head on his shoulder with a smile.
“Thank you Harry.”
“Of course.”
The silence settles, and you begin to relax, but the rumbling of a stomach catches your attention.
“Big belly burger?” You suggest with a laugh. Harry tries to play off his embarrassment.
“Thought you’d never ask, let's go.” You’re laughing the entire way out.
