Literary & Literal Translations: HSR edition

(i do not know nearly enough classical literature to do this post properly)

note: if a chinese name doesn't seem to make any sense, it is often safe to assume that the name is a literary reference (typically to classical poetry or a religious text).

The Xiānzhoū Alliance (in general)

仙舟 (xiān zhōu) = an immortal + ship = "fleet of the immortals"

元帅 (yuán shuài ) = supreme commander/marshal

marshal [符]华 (fú huá) of the XZ Alliance:

literal: [tally issued by a sovereign to their generals or envoys] + corona/magnificent/flowery/chinese

literary: "regal flower"/"ruler of china"/"sovereign crown"/etc

meta: name of a major character in Hi3 & the likeliest identity of the Xianzhou's "Marshal Hua".

general 飞霄 (fēi xiāo) of the XZ Yaoqing:

literal: to flit or fly/to move swiftly/unexpected + clouds/sky/heaven

literary: "swift-flying cloud"/"she who flies to heaven"

椒丘 (jiāo qiū) = [spicy plant] + hill/elder/empty/grave = "death by spice"/"spicy elder"

貊泽 (mò zé) = silent + pool/pond/lustre/favour

general 怀炎 (huái yán) of the XZ Zhuming:

literal: to keep in mind/cherish/to yearn/to conceive a child + inflammation/power/influence

literary: "cherishing flame"/"father of the flames" (ref to his role guarding his ship's captive forge & to his role as team [grand]dad)

云璃 (yún lí) = cloud + coloured glaze/glass = "she who glazes the clouds"

general 爻光 (yáo guāng) of the XZ Yuque:

literal: [the whole symbols that make up the Eight Trigrams in the Book of Changes] + light/glory/only

literary: "[mystical/holy] lustre"

general 有无 (yǒu wú) of the XZ Xuling:

literal: to have/is/own + negative/nothing/to lack

literary: an idiom meaning "to have or have not"/"surplus and shortfall"/"tangible and intangible"/[etc]

Ships of the Xianzhou Alliance

仙舟「罗浮」 (luó fú) = net used to catch birds/to collect/gauze + floating/transient/superficial = "[the ship that] catches those who drift" (possible double meaning of "refugee ship" AND "moving prison")

仙舟「联盟」 (lián méng) = CN term for an alliance/league/union (to ally + alliance/oath/covenant) = "sworn alliance"/"allied by oath"

仙舟「曜青」 (yào qīng) = sunlight/luminary/to shine + green grass/youth/green/blue/black = "shining youth"/"sunlit field"/"green|blue|black sun"

仙舟「朱明」 (zhū míng) = vermillion + sight/to understand/brilliance/justice = "red righteousness" (potential darker meaning of "bloody judgement"?)

仙舟「玉阙」 (yù què) = jade + watchtower/palace/error = "jade palace" (i.e. mythological seat of the ruler of the heavenly court)

仙舟「虚陵」 (xū líng) = void/emptiness + mountain/imperial tomb/mausoleum = "empty tomb"/"mausoleum of the void"

仙舟「方壶」 (fāng hú) = square (mathematics)/honest/method + kettle/pot/flask = "upright pot"? (probs a description of the ship's appearance)

仙舟「玄全」 (xuán quán) = black/dark/obscure + whole/to complete/every = "complete obscurity"/"the great darkness"?

丹恒 (Dān Héng¹)

literal: cinnabar/vermillion red + perseverence/lasting/constant

literary: "lasting cinnabar"/"enduring [mysticism]²"

note1: "héng" is one of the 64 hexagrams from the book of changes (an ancient chinese manual on divination)

note2: in xianxia novels, cultivators use ink made from ground cinnabar to write talismans and alchemical circles (i presume it's used as a substitute for human blood).

雨别 (yŭ bié) = rain/fall [of rain or snow] + departure/to distinguish/do not = "he who left the rain"/"departure of rain"/"do not fall"

丹枫 (dān fēng) = cinnabar/vermillion red + maple = "flaming maple"/"[mystic] maple"

pun1: 丹凤 (dān fèng) = red phoenix

pun2: 单风 (dān fēng) = solitary + wind = "lonely wind"

饮月君 (yǐnyuè-jūn) = to drink + moon + lord/sovereign/chief = "the lord who drank the moon"³ -> "imbibitor lunae" (latin-ish for "moondrinker")

note3: ref. to the legend of the lunar goddess cháng'é who ascended to the moon after drinking an elixir of immortality. diff versions of the legend give "moondrinker" different interpretations, a prominent one being "an immortal who betrayed (or was betrayed by) a mortal husband".

腾荒 (téng huāng) = soaring [from] wilderness/to rise from regrets/to clear out famine -> "permansor terrae" (latin-ish for "the eternal earth")

The High-Cloud Quintet

刃 (rèn) = blade's edge/sword/to kill with a blade = "blade"

note: only animals or objects are given one-character names (the dehumanization is the point).

应星 (yīng xīng) = echo/answer + star/celestial body/celebrity = "star's echo"/"answering star"/"he who answered the heavens"

note: this name is intended to complement dan feng's title of "moondrinker".

镜流 (jìng liú) = mirror/lens + stream/flow (of liquid)/drift/degenerate/banish = "river's reflection"/"drifting mirror"/"lens to degeneration"

pun: 精馏 (jīng liú) = "to distil energy" (i.e. to cultivate)

景元 (jǐng yuán) = setting/circumstance/to respect + key element/leading/fundamental/[currency used in mainland china] = "key setting"/"respecting circumstance"/"he who leads the scene"

pun1: 警员 (jǐng yuán) = a police constable

pun2: 经援 (jīng yuán) = financial aid (this may be a "sugar daddy" joke?)

白珩 (bái héng) = white/clear/pure + "top gem of a girdle-pendant (as worn by aristocrats and high officials)" = pure gem

Residents of the Xianzhou Luofu

驭空 (yù kōng) = drive (a carriage)/control/command + sky/void/emptiness = "[she who] commands the sky"

停云 (tíng yún) = stop/cease/settle + cloud/s = "she who halts the clouds"/"she who settled the sky

pun1: 停匀 (tíng yún) = well-proportioned (of a body)/rhythmic

pun2: 忘归人 (wàng guī rén) = forget + return + person = "she who returns to forget"/"she who has forgetten how to return"

彦卿 (yàn qīng) = elegant/accomplished/man of virtue + minister/high official/[term of endearment between a couple] = "elegant scholar" (this name + the number of lucky accessories he wears are meant to convey that he is a very treasured child)

pun1: 言情 (yán qíng) = romantic/sentimental

pun2: 艳情 (yàn qíng) = erotica

符玄 (fú xuán) = [an official tally]/symbol/a magic figure (as drawn by daoist practioners) + black/dark/profound = "to tally from darkness"/"regal depths"/"profound symbol"

青雀 (qīng què) = green grass/youth/blue/green/black + sparrow = "young sparrow"

李素裳 (lǐ sù shang) = plum + plain/basic + skirt -> this is a literary reference (something something "a mother's love for her daughter [is passed down in cloth]"?)

pun: 俗尚 (sú shàng) = prevailing customs

桂乃芬 (guì năi fēn) = cinnamon/laurel + be/therefore/so + sweet smell/fragrance = "cinnamon sweet" & a transliteration of "guinevere"

藿藿 (huò huò) = flashing (of light)/sound of sharpening a knife

寒鸦 (hán yā) = winter + crow = the eurasian jackdaw

雪衣 (xuĕ yī) = "snow's dress"/"clean afterbirth"/"wearing snow" (this is probs a reference to something)

pun1: 血衣 (xuè yī) = bloodstained garments

pun2: 学艺 (xué yì) = knowledge & skills

白露 (bái lù) = "white dew" -> term for the solar period lasting from the 8th to the 22nd of September

pun: 败露 (bài lù) = a plot or scheme that has been uncovered and exposed

灵砂 (líng shā) = soul/intelligence/fairy/clever/effective + grit/sand/powder = "effective medicine"/"soul of grit"/"intelligence [borne from] sand"

丹朱 (dān zhū) = cinnabar/medicinal pellet/vermillion pigment + vermillion/cinnabar = "medicinal cinnabar"

pun1: 弹珠 (dàn zhū) = a marble

pun2: 淡竹 (dàn zhú) = henon bamboo

黄泉 (Huáng Quán) | "Acheron"

雷電忘川守芽衣 = léidiàn wàngchuān shǒu yáyī (CN) = raiden bosenmori mei (JP)

part1: 雷電 (léi diàn) = "thunder & lightning"

part2: 忘川 (wàng chuān) = forget + river (ref to the soup of forgetfulness fed to the dead before reincarnation in chinese mythology AND to the memory-erasing river lethe from greek mythology)

part3: 守 (shǒu) = guard

part4: 芽衣 ( yá yī) = bud/sprout + dress/covering/afterbirth

literary: "the storm that guards the river of death and rebirth"

黄泉 (huáng quán) = "yellow springs" (CN name for the underworld) -> "acheron" (...the river of woe in the greek underworld)

Misc Characters

开拓者 (kāi tuò zhě) = pioneer/path-breaker/"trailblazer"

三月七 (sān yuè qī) = third/three + month/moon + seven/[memorial service] = "march 7th"

长夜月 (cháng yè yuè) = eternal night's moon/month -> "evernight"

星期日 (xīng qī rì) = weekday (star + period) + sun/day = CN word for "sunday"

知更鸟 (zhī gēng niǎo) = "bird who knows change" = CN name for robins

银狼 (yín láng) = "silver wolf"

流萤 (liú yíng) = to drift + glow-worm = CN word for "firefly"

罗刹 (luó chà) = CN word for "raksha" (a type of demon in buddhism)

阮•梅* (ruăn méi) = plucked string instrument + plum

note*: the dot between the characters indicates that these are two separate names (her surnames of her mother & father) rather than a typical one.

银枝 (yín zhī) = silver + a flower with its stem intact -> "argenti" (argentum is the latin word for silver)

黑天鹅 (hēi tiān é) = black/secret + swan (heaven/sky/divine + goose) -> "black swan"

托帕 (tuō pà) = transliteration of "topaz"

砂金 (shā jīn) = sand + gold = "alluvial gold" (gold that has been panned from a river) -> "aventurine"

翡翠 (fĕi cuì) = jadeite -> "jade"

花火 (CN: huā huǒ | JP: hanabi) = firework/s -> "sparkle"

火花 (huǒ huā) = fire + flower -> "sparxie"

Qingque: If someone tried making me dig my own grave, I would say no.

Qingque: They're going to kill me anyway and I'd love to die doing the way I lived: avoiding manual labor.
