You know what *hunches down close, whispers in your ear* I think the light fury design, while containing obvious sexist elements, is fun and cute and something I would buy merch of
*guns are immediately trained on me. I am shot. A light fury plushie falls from my hands in slow motion. I am grasping a light fury pendant in my hand. No one mourns the wicked*
Venting about HTTYD 3 stuff I’ve seen recently
What’s with this sudden rise of thinking people who criticize certain aspects of HTTYD 3 or have different opinions when it comes to certain parts of the franchise have “missed the entire point of the franchise” or “didn’t understand HTTYD 3″?
Like I’ve seen some people say that others shouldn’t treat their opinions about HTTYD 3 as fact (I agree) and say their own opinions about HTTYD 3 aren’t fact but then they say crap like the stuff mentioned above and just??? So your interpretations and thoughts about HTTYD 3 are opinions, and their interpretations and thoughts about HTTYD 3 are opinions, but their opinions are so wrong they missed the entire point of the franchise and didn’t understand the movie at all?
Like sorry that I don’t think Toothless was portrayed as just an animal throughout most of the franchise. Yes, I think the bond between an animal and a human can be deep and meaningful and you can certainly have an animal as a friend, even a best friend, and yes animals can certainly be more intelligent than a lot of people think. I just don’t think that was how Hiccup and Toothless’ friendship was meant to be portrayed originally, and personally I find the idea of a friendship between a boy and a creature that doesn’t quite think the same way, but has human-like intelligence more compelling and fitting within the franchise and also more interesting considering there’s already so many “boy befriends animal” movies out there. I don’t think I’m missing a major point of the franchise or crapping on animal-human bonds for thinking this way. I don’t think others are missing a major point of the franchise for having a different opinion. Please people, stop acting like you’re smarter than others for thinking Toothless was just an animal all along or whatever.
No, I don’t dislike HTTYD 3 just because the ending isn’t happy. If any HTTYD 3 fans are reading this...please don’t say things like this. Please. It’s so annoying to read things like that.
Whoops this is longer than I intended and is kinda disjointed and I probably didn’t word some things very well but man behavior like this really annoys me and I just had to rant and share my thoughts on certain things.
(As a sort of endnote, yes I have seen similar behavior from people that criticize HTTYD 3. No, I don’t think it’s correct and I try to avoid saying things like that in my own posts. I can understand why some people like HTTYD 3 and disagree with me on certain things.)
Dreamworks gave Toothless a Female counterpart because he is the last of his kind and he needs to mate in order to save his specie that is close to extinction
Thank you for coming to my TED talk
How to Train Your Dragon discourse:
I think it's more about "we gotta make an obviously girly dragon" that has some people irked. Like me. But it could have been pink & I think it's cute that she looks to be blue eyed leucistic like my pet snake! From a design standpoint I personally would like more spikes but sexual dimorphism IS a THING in nature so ppl gotta chill. Of course not always & of course less so in reptiles but it's a family movie.
Not everything has to be progressive af.
At least we'll always have Stormfly, the angriest & pointiest lady. Ya'll angry about The Straights getting dragons. My ace ass over here sighing like "cool, gotta sit through completely unnecessary romance in my favourite things some more, it's fine."
It's not fine they're dragons can I just have a dragon
Rant on the HTTYD discourse
I usually don’t rant much, or talk about my own opinion on this site, mostly because it would probably end in a big explosion, but now, I really need to speak about something: the HTTYD discourse. Y’all didn’t know I was in that fandom? Yeah, well I am, and let me say that I am EXCITED for the third movie (still can’t believe we have to wait almost a whole year smh) and if it’s as good as the second one, we’re in for a threat. But I’ve noticed that there was a lot of different reactions on Tumblr; a lot of people were as excited as I am but others seemed to say that they were disappointed in Dreamworks because they wanted to give Toothless a female counterpart and forced ‘heteronormativity’ on him or something.
sighs
Alright, first of all, let’s be clear: just because you’re gay, doesn’t mean every character ever is? Okay? Okay.
Second of all, why are y’all making a big deal about something that really isn’t? Just because they gave him a female mate doesn’t mean that it’s ‘heteronormativity’. There’s a reason behind all of it. You’re all complaining about the movies, but may I remind you that those movies were based off of actual books? And that they try to keep it consistent? I haven’t read the books, but I saw something that in the books, there is also a female Light Fury that Toothless falls for, so stop blaming Dreamworks. If you want to put the blame on someone, put it on the books. Another important point is that you all seem to forget that Toothless’ kind is almost non-existent. He is the last of his freaking kind. So what would giving him a male mate bring him? Oh yay, representation, that’s absolutely great! I agree, it is, but what will happen when Toothless dies? Homosexuality is great and all but you can’t mate. They may have sex all they want but they will make no babies. Toothless will die and- oh no! NO MORE NIGHT FURIES. Toothless needs a female mate to assure the survival of his kind. It’s not ‘heteronormativity’, it’s SURVIVAL. Yes, a gay mate for him would have been great for representation, and I’m not saying that it’s bad, not at all, but it also wouldn’t have been practical. Gay relationships are great but sometimes you have to look at the bigger problem.
Third of all, why are y’all talking sexuality when it’s literally about dragons? Do y’all expect Toothless to see a make Dragon and be like ‘oh my god I’m gay’? It’s a Dragon, for Christ’s sake. Animals, unlike humans, do not have a sense of sexuality. Most of the time, when the pair up, yes it’s for love, but it’s also for mating purposes. They don’t know what sexualities. Could Toothless have been gay? Yes, he could have but that’s not the important thing here. Just because you headcanon him as gay doesn’t mean that he really is. It’s a thing I see a lot on Tumblr. The character you saw as gay isn’t actually gay? ‘HETERONORMATIVITY!1!1!1’
‘I WILL SUE THE COMPANY’
Like CHILL. I’ve seen that in the Descendants fandom as well.
“CARLOS IS GAY AND DISNEY IS A COWARD!1!1!1 WHY FORCE A HETERO RELATIONSHIP ON HIM”
Haven’t y’all heard of bisexuality? (Also, Descendants is also based off a book... just sayin’)
Back to HTTYD. The fandom is being ridiculous. You are all making this movie about Toothless’ sexuality when this is not what the movie is about. Why is nobody talking about the ‘There were dragons when I was a boy’
GUYS. DRAGONS MIGHT DISAPPEAR. DISAPPEAR. WHY IS THE GENDER A FRICKEN DRAGON SO IMPORTANT?
Let’s take for a second that Toothless was actually straight and that Dreamworks gave him a gay relationship. No one would have complained right? No, of course not, because it’s a gay relationship, of course it’s okay. But why is it so controversial to give an animal a heterosexual relationship, especially when that animal hasn’t been confirmed to be gay, and ESPECIALLY when the said animal is the last of his kind?
Also, one last thing: Pride month. Why are y’all making it a big deal just because it’s pride month. ‘OH MY GOD, GIVING AN HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP TO A DRAGON DURING PRIDE MONTH???? THAT’S DISRESPECTING THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY!1!1!1!1!1’
Like honestly, this is getting ridiculous. Do you think that Dreamworks did it on purpose just to piss of the gays? NO. Just- stop. Not everything is about sexualities. Not everything is about gays (even tho Tumblr makes it seem like it). Not everything has to be political.
Can y’all just enjoy the movie like everyone else and stop trying to find every flaw in everything? Stop watching it in your normal eyes, and watch it in your child eyes instead. At least children know how to enjoy a good movie.
Rewatching Httyd and noticing how many plot holes the final movie has;
Race to the edge is cannon to the storyline so it messes with the ending so much
Did they just ignore an island that needs a dragon to not burn up in lava ??
What about the razorwhips?? Wouldn't they just go extinct if both genders were co-existing in the hidden world? They also have an entire island to live on,,
And at the end of Race to the Edge, Valka gets the Wilderbeast's egg. If that's the same dragon in the second movie, and only a few years have past, that dragon grows incredibly quickly 😭 But Valka says her Wilderbeast has protected them for years in an ice cove covered in lush plants. Two different Wilderbeasts?? What happened to the Wilderbeast on Beserker island??
Why didn't they include Heather and that lot in the movies ☹️💔
Disclaimer: This is based on the first HTTYD 3 trailer and associated promo material, and comes from a place of love for the series. I desperately want to be pleasantly surprised when I actually see the film.
In all seriousness, I do think that HTTYD 3 is asking an important question that continues the narrative nicely from the first two movies: what impact does the relationship between the humans and dragons actually have on the dragons? The villagers use the dragons for manual labour, for entertainment, and no longer have to expend resources keeping their livestock safe. While the dragons are arguably not being hunted anymore (by this group of people), it has made a significant change to their natural behaviour and way of life that might very well be detrimental.
As humans, we like to anthropomorphise things, and assume that because something is ‘healthy’ and ‘comfortable’ that it is living its life to the fullest. But when you take a highly intelligent animal out of its natural habitat you really can’t make the call on what things they would be missing out on as a result. Especially when you as humans benefit in multiple convenient ways from the relationship, it’s easy to become complacent.
Finding a hidden dragon world that makes Hiccup question the impact their gentling of the dragons is having on them? Awesome, heart-wrenching plot conflict. Having a villain that exemplifies the worst of the human impact on these creatures by having him hunt nightfuries for rarity and sport, in the guise of ‘protecting’ life? Fucking fantastic, what a brilliant cohesive and poignant narrative. The parallels between it and the exotic pet trade, as well as the exotic hunting industry are super topical.
Having the climax where Hiccup realises they need to let the dragons be dragons and that human interaction with them is putting them in harm’s way even with the best of intentions? What amazing growth. And then having to face the horrible reality where the rest of the dragons can go and be with their kind, Toothless would be safer but lonely? Heartbreaking.
None of that requires a fucking romantic subplot with a smooth and pretty white girl dragon, which ultimately is only there to comfort that final consequence of the central conflict. It’s okay guys! Toothless won’t be alone! He has a girlfriend now! And she’s SPARKLY!!! It’s so disappointing to see what is potentially a really good and thoughtful conclusion to a great series end like... this.
