Five of the demon brothers stared in horror at the creme pie that was now staining the floor of the dining room in the House of Lamentation. The look of glee on Mammon’s face was shifting to one of confusion on seeing his brothers’ reactions. The words “food fight” seemed to echo in the sudden silence. It was in moments like these that the brain decided to show a perfect recollection of facts. Like how it had been 2,317 years since someone last tried to start a food fight in Beel’s presence, and that their screwball brother Mammon wasn’t there at the time.
A sudden bloodlust filled the air, causing the brothers to instinctually shift into their demon form. It was a simple fight or flight response, and for five of the brothers, the only thing on their mind was “flight”.
Everything was over in a matter of seconds. Beel spun to the side and latched on to the tail of the fleeing Levi, using his monstrous strength to swing his brother through the air like a weight and smash him down onto Mammon, the perpetrator of this most heinous crime. Asmo tried to bolt for the door to the kitchen, wishing he’d just let the pie hit him instead of automatically ducking when he saw something flying at him. A sturdy wooden chair crashed into his back, knocking him down before he made it ten feet and stunning him.
Lucifer attempted to leap straight up and break through the ceiling, making his own way out of the carnage. He was only at head level when a claw latched onto his leg like an iron band and flung him sideways, colliding with Satan who was running along the ground on all fours in an attempt to stay low and out of sight. The two slid along the floor and crashed into the downed Asmo, forming a pile of limbs.
Belphegor cowered under the thick table, hoping to be overlooked in the madness. A pair of giant clawed hands gripping the edge of the table dashed this hope. With a grunt, the table was flung straight up and became embedded in the ceiling. Looking up at his enraged twin, Belphie let out a resigned sigh as Beel grabbed him by the horns and flung him into the pile of demon limbs in the corner. All told, his was the most gentle chastisement, just a slight “oof” as Levi and Mammon were tossed on top of him. Enjoying the warmth of the pile, Belphie wiggled down a little to get more comfortable and settled in for a nap.
————-——————————————
MC hurried down the stairs, knowing that they were going to get lectured by Lucifer for being late to dinner. Opening the door to the dining room while trying to avoid looking at the head of the table, they stopped abruptly at the sight in front of them.
In the corner of the room, six of the brothers were piled up. Beel was sitting on top of the pile, a pan of blackberry cobbler in one hand, a fork in the other. Feeling the tension in the air, MC slowly took a step back, letting the door close in front of them. Tonight did not seem like a good night for dinner at all.

He smiles awkwardly and looks down at his lap. “Thanks, Mum…” He tightens his grip on the biscuit tin that’s resting on his knees. The two of them spent all of yesterday afternoon in the kitchen together baking batches upon batches of his favourite chocolate biscuits to take with him. The tin on his lap is filled to the brim but it’s barely half of what they made together, the rest are in a selection of reusable plastic containers, the idea being that once Aeon has eaten the biscuits he’ll be able to use the containers for storing things or bringing his own lunch to places instead of buying it. He takes the lid off of the tin on his lap and brings it to his nose, sniffing deeply. Chocolate. He’s sure over the next few weeks, he’ll come to associate the smell and taste of these biscuits with home and his mum but he doesn’t mind, there are much worse scents to associate with home, he reasons. He picks one of the biscuits up and silently offers it to his mum without looking away from the tin.
He doesn’t need to hear the smile in her voice to know that she’s glancing over at him briefly with that ever-knowing look in her eye. “Thank you, love. You should have one too, chase those nerves away with chocolate-y goodness.”
“I’m not nervous,” he lies, pointedly ignoring the weight of his mum’s gaze—the heaviness thankfully lessened due to the fact that she’s mostly focussing on the road. “...Okay fine, I’m a little nervous,” he admits, not that he needed to, given that the two of them already knew it, but it’s nice to speak the words out loud to an actual human for once. Up until now the only ‘person’ he’s admitted it to has been his favourite stuffed toy in the nights leading up to his departure, which, no matter how many different ways he thinks about, makes him feel ridiculously childish, despite the fact that he’s currently on his way to start university. He knows that lots of people his age and older still have stuffed animals and plushies of all varieties but he’s never met anyone that still talks to them in the way that he does. It doesn’t bother him much usually, but the fact that he’s going to be sharing a room with someone he’s never met before—someone who might judge him—is beginning to affect him more and more the closer he gets to campus.
“I can hear you thinking over there.” His mum’s voice breaks through the beginnings of his internal spiralling. “What’s going on, hun? Talk to me.”
“I’m just nervous about meeting my roommate,” he says quietly. “It’s nothing serious.”

Aeon returns from the scavenger hunt exhausted. Simply pushing the door to his dorm open and lifting his aching leg to step over the threshold feels like a monumental task. He bypasses everything, leaving his shoes and backpack on as he faceplants onto his bed, huffing out a sigh of relief as he gives his feet and back some respite.
From somewhere in the room—presumably his desk or his bed—Dewdrop chuckles at him. “You tired?”
Aeon groans, the sound muffled by his bedspread.
Dewdrop snorts. “I’ll take that as a yes, then.”
“My entire body hurts,” Aeon complains, wondering faintly if Dewdrop can even hear anything he’s saying through the fluff of his pillow.
“Ah, the wonders of the first year scavenger hunt,” Dewdrop reminisces. “I don’t miss that shit at all.”
Aeon grabs his other pillow and throws it in the direction of Dewdrop’s voice, so far beyond tired and sore that he doesn’t care if it’s impolite. “Stop taunting me, I’m dying.”
“Aw, kid, it’s alright,” Dewdrop soothes, and Aeon startles when he feels his roommate’s hand rest gently on his shoulder. The pillow he threw at him gets placed next to his head and Aeon rolls over to see Dewdrop staring down at him with an expression full of pity, but that doesn’t stop Aeon from noticing the small smile quirking at the corner of Dewdrop’s lips as he fully takes in Aeon’s predicament.
“I’m one year younger than you, asshat,” he groans, sitting up to sling the backpack off of his shoulders and drop it on the ground. “I’m not a kid.”
Dewdrop suppresses a laugh, which Aeon quickly discovers is a preemptive one in preparation for a truly terrible joke that his roommate is about to impart onto him. “Feisty little baby child,” he patronises, patting Aeon on the head and pouting as he makes eye contact. Aeon glowers at him, but any malice behind the expression is tainted by his own suppressed laugh.
Is this what Rain meant when they said Dewdrop was capable of being a menace? Whether they were referring to this side of his roommate or not, Aeon can’t deny that he likes it. He knows the two of them have really only just met, but he wouldn’t have guessed that Dewdrop’s sense of humour would be like this at all. He’s fun.
They both bite back another round of chuckles as both their stomachs rumble, but Aeon’s laughter quickly fades out as he remembers that he has to move to get up and go to dinner.
Dewdrop, miraculously seeming to know exactly what Aeon is thinking, pipes up with an offer. “Do you want me to go down and bring you up some dinner?”
Aeon sighs, immediately tempted. He’s silent for a moment, weighing the benefit of not having to move versus the cost of putting the responsibility of his dinner on Dewdrop. He groans and stretches as he stands. “No, I s’pose I should head down. Thank you though.” He smiles appreciatively at his roommate and heads towards the door, opening it for him. “We can head down together though, if you want?”

As time went on and the earth ghoul still hadn’t returned, Rain found that his eyes kept flicking back to the plant mischievously, tempted to pour at least some of his water into the pot, just to see if Mountain would really notice, or if the earth ghoul was just using Rain’s lacking knowledge of earth ghoul magick to his advantage. Unfortunately for Rain’s ever-present sense of mischief, the calmer and at least vaguely rational side of him told him to suck it up and finish the glass; if not to avoid the worsening of his headache, then at least to avoid Mountain’s inevitably disappointed shake of his head. He drained the remaining water in the glass and set it on a side table, more than happy to wait by himself for however long it took Mountain to come back. Before he had the chance to sit with himself for very long however, the sound of running footsteps in the hallway startled him. Excitement sparked in him at the thought that Mountain would be back so soon, along with confusion as to why the earth ghoul would be running to return now that he knew Rain was safe. When he heard a voice call out however, it wasn’t Mountain’s.
“Rain? Baby?”
Rain froze, heart beating as his breath caught in his throat and unshed tears began to sting at the corners of his eyes. Not now. Please not now.
Not when he’d just started to feel better.
“There you are, mi renacuajo.” Rain turned his head towards the door slowly, inhaling sharply at the sight of Swiss standing there, breathing heavily, a relieved smile on his face for having found his love. “I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to find you, Rainy.” Rain could feel his chest heaving faster and with less and less rhythm the more Swiss talked. No matter how hard he tried to control his breathing, his body shook with the force of it and the tears were now threatening to spill down his cheeks.
The second Swiss noticed this however, the smile dropped off his face, immediately replaced by a concerned slant to his mouth and a worried furrow of his eyebrows as he scanned Rain up and down, no doubt taking in the signs of distress. He walked over and crouched on the floor in front of Rain, careful to avoid contact with the water ghoul. “Are you– Are you alright?”
Rain opened his mouth to tell Swiss he was fine, to tell him not to worry, to tell him to go away and leave him alone, but all that came out was a choked sob. Once he started crying again, Rain quickly realised he couldn’t stop himself. It wasn’t the multi ghoul’s fault, it never was, but the sight of Swiss had brought back every single turbulent emotion Rain had been experiencing that day. Despair and dysphoria washed over him knowing that Swiss would, inevitably, say the wrong thing and there was nothing the water ghoul could do about it. This was only followed by waves of worthlessness that took immense delight in reminding Rain that he’d be able to stop these horrible situations if only he could suck it up and tell swiss; if only he could stop being so fucking pathetic. At Mountain’s appearance, Rain had thought the worst of his day was over, but now, with Swiss’ return and remnants of his thoughts from earlier coming back in full force, he wasn’t so sure.
Who was Rain to keep such sensitive information about himself, one of the multi ghoul’s packmates, a secret from him? Who was he to use Swiss as a means of making himself feel worse without his knowledge; to force the multi ghoul to fuck him while neglecting to tell him the full details of Rain’s situation and identity? And who was he to be able to do nothing but cry at the mere sight of Swiss, his friend; his partner? He wasn’t even able to pull himself together enough to pretend he was fine, to relieve Swiss of his worries and reassure him that he’d done nothing wrong. Sathanas, Rain was a fraud. A burden. How dare he let himself break down like this in front of Swiss? All he had to do was smile, hold back the tears, and nod serenely in order to convince the multi ghoul that he was okay.

but ! without further ado, 2.2k words of rain trying to hide his regression from dew and having a breakdown about it under the cut.
“Rain?”
The water ghoul looks up from his bass at the sound of Dewdrop’s voice, carefully schooling his expression into something typical of how he acts when he isn’t regressed; when he’s normal, his brain unhelpfully supplies. He clears his throat, giving himself a little more time to prepare himself for the conversation ahead. “Hey, sundew. What’s up?”
The words come out easier than he expected them to, but it still feels so wrong. He’s not supposed to talk like that, he’s not supposed to direct the conversation. He’s supposed to crawl into Dewdrop’s arms and let himself be held and loved, but he can’t. Can’t, because he has so much to do today. Has so many assigned duties on top of everything else he’s wanted to get done all week. He can’t focus on any of it if he’s regressed, so if he pretends to be fine—to be normal—then maybe he’ll be able to do what he needs to.
He’s jolted out of his head by Dewdrop’s voice. “Want a practice partner? I– I’m kinda struggling with some of the solos…”
The hesitation in the fire ghoul’s tone immediately sets Rain on edge. Dewdrop needs comforting, he thinks, but that’s not something the water ghoul is able to do when he’s regressed; not well, at least. Still, Rain tries. He smiles what he hopes is a regular, reassuring smile and reaches an arm out, ushering Dewdrop to sit down next to him. The gestures come to him easily. It’s a relief, but he can’t help the small voice in the back of his mind telling him the reason he’s able to pretend to be normal is because he pretends to be regressed.
(Which isn’t true. He knows it’s not. It’s proven by night curled up in Swiss’ arms, unable to murmur even a single word because he’s just too small to do anything else. By all the times he hasn’t been able to function without someone holding his hand, guiding him through the day. Alas, it’s never been something he can stop thinking. That he’s a fraud; so desperate for the attention of his packmates that he’s resorted to lying, deceiving them, in order to gain a shred of affection, a kind word here and there.)
The fire ghoul grins happily and sets himself up quickly, eyeing the music on Rain’s stand to gauge where he should flip to in his own music. “Rats, eh?”
“Mhmm, wa– Rats.” He turns away from Dewdrop, cheeks burning as he clears his throat and attempts to brush the slip off as something catching in his throat. “Good bassline. Hard when you haven’t played it in months, though.”
Dewdrop hums in agreement. “Mmm, I can imagine.” He fidgets with the tuning pegs, tilting his head in Rain’s direction, silently asking for a note to match. Rain obliges. “D’you wanna start from the start, or…?”
“Start’s fine,” Rain smiles. He knows the start best, he’ll be able to do it, he’s sure. He can ignore the brain fog. He can pretend. For Dewdrop, he can pretend. The fire ghoul seemed insecure and burdened enough when he asked to run through the solos. He doesn’t need Rain’s regressed headspace making anything more difficult for him. “Uhm…” he begins, unsure; failing already. “B– Backing track?” He stutters on the B and the K is over pronounced in compensation of his difficulty with the letter, but Dewdrop understands—and more importantly, he doesn’t seem to notice.
“I think we’ll be fine, right, Rainy?” He turns to smile at the water ghoul, eyes so soft and gentle, but there’s something underneath his tone that makes Rain fumble his bass.
“W– Why are you calling me ‘Rainy’ like that? You only say it like that when I’m… small.”
Dewdrop’s smile falters slightly, but his eyes remain warm. Kind. “Well, you can tell me if I’m wrong, but I thought you might’ve been feeling a bit small, love. Am I right?”
Rain readjusts his bass on his hip, refusing to meet Dewdrop’s eyes. “N– No… I– I feel fine,” he lies. “Normal. ‘M good. Promise.” He knows Dewdrop doesn’t believe him, but he can’t help but hope that maybe he’s convinced the fire ghoul. After all, Dewdrop has things to do today as well. He can’t blow off a whole day just to help Rain. Rain can’t ask him to do that.
“Are you sure, puddle? You’re not just telling me that because you feel bad about being small?”
“...Oh. Uhm… N– No?” Rain does his best to sound convincing but he knows there’s no persuading Dewdrop now, not when he already knows.
Dewdrop fixes him with a look, still adoring, but stern. “It’s not nice to lie, my love.”
And just like that, Rain’s facade crumbles.
His eyes fill with tears as he curls in on himself, hugging his bass tightly to his body. “I– I’m sorry, Dewy,” he cries. “I– I didn’ mean to! I’m sorry sorry, I’m really, very sorry. I didn’ mean to lie, ‘m sorry!”
He rocks back and forth, doing his best to self-soothe but it’s not working. He doesn’t know how to calm down. Doesn’t really know why his reaction to Dewdrop’s gentle chiding is a breakdown. He knows the fire ghoul was only trying to nudge him out of his pretences but he can’t help but listen to the voice in his head that whispers softly, cruelly.
He hates you for lying to him. He’s never going to talk to you again.
You got too comfortable with him. Shared too much. He doesn’t want to take care of you. He only does it to have an excuse to tell you what you’re doing wrong.
Such a burden to him. To the pack. Why can’t you just stop regressing? Just stop it. Stop being so small. Stop being so fucking weak.
He lets out a panicked yelp when Dewdrop reaches out to comfort him. “Nuh uh! Don’t touch me. I– I don’ deserve it.”
“Wh–” Dewdrop flounders.
That means it’s true; Rain doesn’t deserve it. He curls in on himself even further; he shouldn’t have said anything. Should have kept it to himself. Should have left the room the second Dewdrop entered it. Should have thought about someone other than himself and his own pathetic, useless needs for once.
“What makes you think that, Rainy?”
“Liar get punish,” he parrots as accurately as he can manage. “Only good boy get to be touch.”
“Oh, love…” Dewdrop sounds so disappointed. Rain braces himself for the inevitable. “That’s our rule for when you’re big and we, uhh…” He trails off, clearly unsure of how to phrase what he needs to say. Rain wishes he could rid the fog from his head enough to be able to reassure Dewdrop that he’s okay; it was just a slip of his mouth that made him say that, it’s not what he really thinks. But if he says that, it’s only fuelling the fire, and he’ll be punished more for lying; he’ll punish himself for lying. “Look, Rainy, love,” the fire ghoul tries again. “My point is that those rules don’t apply to you right now. They’re only there for when you’re big and we have our… Our special playtimes, yeah?” Dewdrop cringes at the words special playtimes and Rain knows exactly why; the phrase sounds so forced. He hates that Dewdrop feels the need to mince his words around Rain when he’s like this, as if the water ghoul doesn’t retain his understanding of the world and his own life when he regresses.
“You– You don’ like special playtime?” Rain’s goading Dewdrop into giving him an answer that he’ll hate, that will make him feel worse, he knows he is. But as long as the fire ghoul doesn’t notice, Rain doesn’t care. He deserves to feel bad, he knows that much. But he doesn’t feel bad enough, and it’s going to be hard to sink himself down to the level of bad that he deserves with Dewdrop watching his every move.
“No, no, Rainy,” he disagrees quickly. Too quickly, Rain thinks. “I love our special playtimes. I love them a lot, I promise. But… I don’t think this is something we should be talking about when you’re little, okay? We can talk about it when you’re big again if you want to, though.”
“O– Okay…” Rain’s heart sinks. It’s always like this. The very nature of their ghoul pack results in him being left out of most things when he’s little. Sometimes he doesn’t mind, and he’s more than content to sit with one of his packmates and fill some colouring sheets with bright pencil markings or curl up in their arms and drift off to sleep. But other times? His pack’s refusal to include him in certain activities or conversations feels less like protection and more like a poor disguise of their hatred of him, of their unwillingness to involve him in pack affairs. He understands, really, he does. He knows that when he’s regressed, there are things he shouldn’t be exposed to. Knows that when his pack are frustrated with him, he’s rarely the one at fault, just the one unlucky enough to bear the brunt of their frustration, no matter how much they try to hide it for his sake. But he also knows that the pack’s exclusion of him is because they don’t like him. Don’t enjoy his presence in any of the forms it takes. Don’t care about him enough to hide their annoyance, despite knowing their frustration directed at him can cause him to spiral so intensely that he barely remembers the rest of the day. He knows all of this, but nothing makes it hurt any less.
If he were in a better state of mind, he might reach out to Dewdrop and ask to be held for a while. Might sob and scream and cry until there aren’t any tears left but it would be okay, because he’d be safe in the fire ghoul’s arms. As it is, he can’t. He tells himself he doesn’t want to, which is true, in part. There’s a part of him desperately fighting to run away from Dewdrop, to refuse to ask for comfort, to never be a burden, never show weakness because otherwise he won’t love you anymore and you’ll be all alone all over again. The other part longs for comfort, regardless of the negative impact he knows it will have on his relationship with Dewdrop. He wants to be held, wants to be reassured that it’s okay to cry, that it’s okay because Dewdrop’s got him and he’s never letting go, never leaving. And so, he finds himself at an impasse and so angry at himself that he wants to punch something. Scream. Break his arm. Kill one of Copia’s rats. Kill himself.
The only benefit to being regressed that he can think of right now is that if he screams, no one bats an eye; all too accustomed to toddlers throwing tantrums that they don’t seem to care. And so when Dewdrop tentatively reaches an arm out, testing the waters to see whether Rain is ready for touch, the water ghoul screams. And he does it properly.
He doesn’t know how long he screams for before stopping, but once he stops, his throat is raw and aching in the silence of the room. He’s curled in on himself on the floor—bass discarded somewhere off to the side, hopefully in one piece—surrounded by pleasant warmth and pressure. Slowly, he realises that he’s wrapped up in Dewdrop’s embrace, and he begins to panic all over again, throat refusing to make another sound dispute his frantic attempts.
A warm hand cards through his hair, soft voice shushing him gently. “If you really want me to let go, Rainy, I will,” Dewdrop reassures him. “But I don’t want to let go, love. I want to help you, and I don’t want to leave you alone like this, okay?”
Rain turns his head and buries himself against Dewdrop’s chest, sobbing quietly. His emotional regulation for the day has been used up, and he knows that any and all emotions he feels for the rest of the day—or week, probably—will be on full display for everyone to see, no matter how much he wants to hide them. He finds himself nodding along to the fire ghoul’s words without his own brain’s permission. It’s impossible to deny for any longer that he wants comfort—he needs it so desperately it may as well be oxygen at this point—but he can’t bring himself to ask for it. He knows he doesn’t deserve it, and he knows that he’ll only feel worse later as a result of talking to Dewdrop and receiving his love and affections, but for now, that’s a problem for future Rain. Right now, all he really cares about is curling up in Dewdrop’s arms and soaking in the gentle comfort that the fire ghoul seems to be so good at providing him when he’s like this.
He doesn’t feel better about it, and he knows he’s not going to. To be honest, he doesn’t even want to try to feel better about it. But now that he’s here, he’ll accept the comfort of gentle caresses and chaste forehead kisses that Dewdrop seems intent on gifting to him. He’ll work on not feeling even worse about the fire ghoul’s affections another time.

Aeon turns around smiling and almost jumps out of his skin when he sees Dewdrop looking at him. His reading glasses have fallen down his nose and Aeon has to fight the urge to go and push them up for him.
Luckily for him, Dewdrop pushes them up unprompted, but he won’t stop staring.
“What?” Aeon doesn’t like the way he’s looking at him.
“That your girlfriend?”
Aeon has to stop himself from laughing in surprise. “What? No, no. Nothing like that. That’s just Rory. Aurora. We’ve been best friends since we were little kids.”
Dewdrop hums and turns back to his desk. “Cute.”
Now that Aurora has gone, Aeon’s curiosity has returned. “When did you get back? It’s early.”
“About six.” He replies without looking up from his writing. “Rain had to get up early for a shift.”
He has no idea who that is, but presumably they’re Dewdrop’s friend with the spare bed. “Cool.” The conversation is stilted and awkward but the silence feels somehow more awkward. “Um, I’m probably going to help Rory decorate her room today. I mightn’t be around much.”
Dewdrop finally looks up from his notes again, smiling at Aeon. “That sounds nice,” he says, as earnestly as one can manage at seven in the morning. “Have fun.”
“Thanks! I won’t leave for a while yet but I’m excited,” he grins. “I haven’t seen Rory in forever.”

“I– I’m trans too.”
If Dewdrop is surprised he doesn’t acknowledge it and Aeon is grateful for that. He knows he’s not like a lot of other trans people his age, knows how lucky he’s been to have a supportive mother and a competent doctor. “Oh. Well, that’s good then.” He nods, mostly to himself, Aeon thinks. “I’m Dewdrop.”
“Aeon. I’m first year.”
“I know,” Dewdrop says. “It said on the slip.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I’m in my second year. Biomed, you?”
“Um, psychology.”
Dewdrop nods thoughtfully. “Sounds interesting. I’m majoring in neuroscience, all that freaky brain shit is cool.”
“Yeah,” Aeon agrees, lapsing into silence. He’s not sure how to move the conversation on from here. Luckily for him, Dewdrop speaks next.
“I was planning on heading out with a few friends. Do you want me to stay and help you unpack or do you want some time alone?”
“Alone time would be nice, if that’s okay.”
“Yeah, of course. Moving away from home is scary. So’s sharing a room with a stranger. You unpack and shoot me a text if you need help. Here’s my number.” Dewdrop scribbles his phone number down on a bit of loose paper and hands it to Aeon on his way out the door. “I might stay in my friend’s room tonight, give you a bit of space. I’ll let you know either way. Have fun unpacking.”
