My first time opening paleoart commissions! Species Profile: Dire Garm

The Garm (Hyaenobarath dirus furiosa) is known by many names by many people groups, across Europe it is called the Garm, across North America the Dire Brute and Graah. This very late surviving and very derived Hyaenodont is a domesticated animal of the Furiosas.

Pictured here are the “Wild type” muts of the average Garm breed. These animals are great runners fast enough to catch a ridden horse and with high enough stamina to hunt all day, these beasts can climb and swim and dig and will not stop at anything to catch their prey. Garms are very vocal and protective animals especially of Furiosa young, but can be raised and trained by humans much the same like a dog, though without allowing it to hunt the Garm will likely leave.

Garms generally come in rusty reds and browns to almost black coat patterns. Furiosas generally breed them for a purpose not colour and the currently most common “breeds” can be mostly considered land races. The Garms pictured here are actually lore relevant! The upper one is called Rascal, a female and the lower one is Koba, a male. Both belong to the Furiosa Marder Woods, the main character of the first Palubolígolian lore story, but Koba later on bonds more closely to Marder’s best friend and partner James Oxton.

There used to be a second species of Garm domesticated in Siberia called the Hyaenobarath maxdirus brutalis, this animal was extremely aggressive with very high prey drive. Furiosas crossbred these into their domestic Garms to make them better hunters of humans (the purpose of Furiosas is to slow human population growth and collapse). Nowadays the only thing this species contributes to modern Garms is the ability to travel through the Umbra, as shadow travel is very useful to all Garms.

On Palubolígo you can currently find two main groups of Garms - on the right are the War Garms originating from Koba and Rascal, which are used by the Apokalypsa and Yss militaries and the Cabra Garms on the left which are mostly family companions/herding dogs. It is likely that among the Furiosas found living with the Hvostaku there might very well be other breeds of Garm.
