So, I get that there are some legit concerns with how the Internet Archive handles books, but it’s a truly amazing resource for one specific thing—titles that are out of print but not out of copyright, but they haven’t been reprinted either digitally or on paper, and aren’t likely to be.
Obscure scifi anthologies from the 70s. Trashy 80s middle grade and YA paperbacks. Kids’ science books from the 50s and 60s. Stuff like that.
I’m happy to buy things when I can, but my apartment has limited space and it’s not like me buying it used does anything to support the author. In some cases the actual author was probably paid a flat work for hire fee, and the rights belong to a publisher that got subsumed 5 mergers ago.
It’s also great as a historical book cover gallery, though unfortunately a lot of times there isn’t any cover artist credit in the metadata (and depending on the age of the title, there might not be any in the actual book—think of the recent mystery of the Wrinkle in Time cover artist…)
So, yeah, I might have a new hyperfixation…
