I know I've addressed mischaracterization here more than once, but I've been seeing so much on internet that maybe I should be more obvious.
I've held this in for too long, and I need to say it clearly: Canon Remus Lupin has been completely erased by much of the Marauders fandom. And I’m done pretending it doesn’t hurt.
Let’s be honest: the version of Remus Lupin popularized by fics like ATYD is not Remus. It’s a whole different character wearing his name. And it’s painful for those of us who have loved him deeply, for years. Not as a teen heartthrob, not as a ship vessel, but as the thoughtful, complex, kind man we actually met in the "Harry Potter" books.
Here’s a list of everything the fandom has changed about him (and why that matters);
1. “Drug Dealer” Remus
Yes, in their headcanons, Remus sells drugs at Hogwarts. This is completely non-canon, totally out of character, and offensive to who he is: a deeply responsible man who already feels monstrous because of something he didn’t choose. He’d never risk hurting others that way.
2. Raised in an Orphanage / Abusive Father
Canon tells us Lyall Lupin loved Remus dearly and tried to protect him. Turning Lyall into an abuser and Remus into an angry orphan is a classic fandom move to "grit-ify" him, stripping away the tenderness that shaped his restraint and gentleness.
Let's make it clear: Remus grew up watching his beloved parents suffer and being outcasts because of him. That's what made him keep everyone (including Harry and Tonks) at arm's length.
3. Anger Issues
This one is especially frustrating. Remus Lupin is arguably the most emotionally self-controlled characters in the entire series. If anyone had anger issues, it was Sirius (impulsive, reckless and explosive). Remus? He was calm even in unbearable pain.
4. Emotional Instability Before the Full Moon
Book Remus is never said to be affected by the moon unless it’s full. That’s something the 6th film implied, in a 90% non-canon sequence where the only canon thing is the conversation he has with Harry about Snape.
5. Hypersexualized and Over-Romanticized
Remus in fanon is often portrayed as highly sexual, jaded, or emotionally dependent. But canon shows the opposite. He didn’t believe he deserved love. He thought he was too dangerous. He only fell in love once (with Tonks) and even then, he tried to push her away to protect her. That is love born of restraint and selflessness.
Remus was more likely to be a virgin before Tonks than the Casanova the fandom makes of him.
6. Addiction and Self-Destruction
Canon Remus was depressed, yes, but he was incredibly rational. He was poor, discriminated against, and alone, yet he never turned to substances, recklessness, or despair. He got up. He tried. He taught. He loved. That's strength. Quiet, unwavering strength.
7. Crude Language & Swearing
Fandom Remus often talks like a foul-mouthed rebel. Canon Remus? He was one of the most polite, softly-spoken, and articulate characters in the books. He chose his words carefully. Even when angry, his language was never rough. It was respectful, thoughtful, precise.
8. Teaching & Purpose Erased
Canon Remus was an incredible teacher, maybe the best DADA professor Hogwarts ever had. He encouraged, protected, and believed in his students. That doesn’t come from nowhere. He had a calling. He lived with purpose, even when the world gave him none.
9. Replacing Him with a Ship
Let’s be clear: the Remus/Sirius ship not only doesn’t make sense in canon but it completely overwrites his life. It reduces him to a love interest for someone who in canon treated him more like a boring older brother than a real friend. Sirius distrusted him, weaponized him (the Snape prank), and left him nothing in his will. That is not a healthy relationship. It’s not even close.
Remus Lupin is the man who:
Fought for good even when he had nothing to gain.
Spoke gently in a world that treated him like a monster.
Took a cursed, painful life and chose to live it with grace.
Loved only once, deeply, selflessly, and became a father knowing he might not live to see his child grow.
Was wise, measured, and heartbreakingly human.
He wasn’t a rebel. He wasn’t edgy. He wasn’t reckless. He was good. Not perfect. Human. But good. And the fandom needs to stop rewriting that goodness out of him.

I was just on TikTok and I saw a picture (the one from DH part 1) of Remus and Tonks right after the Battle of 7 Potters (I think) where he’s got his arm around her, and someone edited it to make it look like Sirius.

I HATE Wolfstar. Well, maybe 'hate' is a bit strong of a word but , I just can't ship it. I can't even see Sirius and Remus as brothers. Not after everything that happened to them. Like, Sirius tried to use Remus to kill someone and didn't even think about what could happen if Remus really didn't kill or turn Snape into a Werewolf. Then they both thought that the other was the spy in the Order. I really don't understand the ship. This isn't me attacking anyone it's just my personal opinion.
Many people ship canonically straight characters and that's fine. Everyone has their fantasies, fetishes and favourite tropes. But when it comes to Remus Lupin, some people — Marauders fans again, of course 🙄— say he's implied to be gay or bi in canon.
Let me just correct you right there: No. he's not. He's actually heavily implied to be grey aroace. I'm sorry, ship what you want but this is not a matter of Interpretation. It is what it is. Full stop.
So, let’s sit down, pour some tea, and straighten out a few things (pun not intended, but I’ll take it):
Remus John Lupin is canonically straight.
• He had a mild crush on Lily Evans (stated by J.K. Rowling in an interview).
• He fell in love with and married Nymphadora Tonks. He had never fallen in love before! Never.
His romantic arc is exclusively with women.
His official biography states that he had never fallen in love before Tonks. If you’re still arguing, you’re not arguing with an interpretation. You’re arguing with a direct statement. That’s not canon-adjacent. That’s just canon.
David Thewlis is a brilliant actor — and a notorious joker.
He’s witty. He’s playful. He cracked a joke about Lupin being gay because Cuarón (the director) told him to play the character like a “gay junkie.”
Everyone on set laughed. Because it was a joke. It was behind-the-scenes direction and performance.
The metaphor of lycanthropy is about stigma.
Specifically, J.K. Rowling said it represents “the stigma surrounding blood-borne diseases such as AIDS.”
That’s about how society treats people, not a metaphor for queerness.
(Side note: Not all people with AIDS are gay, and not all gay people have AIDS — let’s not regress 40 years in our public understanding.)
Remus as queer representation
You know who else is emotionally repressed, guilt-ridden, touch-starved, and awkward around romance? Aroace people.
If anything, canon leans toward grey aroace, not toward any gay or bi reading.
He spent most of his life avoiding love, never fell in love until his mid-30s, and struggled with intimacy due to trauma and internalized stigma. That’s aroace spectrum, baby.
So... Just write your fanfics and be happy. But let people who apreciate canon and who seek true representation be happy too.
Someone on TikTok commented under a post about Tonks: “I hated her relationship with Remus. W*lfstar made much more sense.”
Hmmm... More sense? Really??!
How can a fanon ship built entirely on projection make “more sense” than a canon relationship that showed emotional growth, mutual sacrifice, and real consequences?
Ok, let's brake this down:
Canon Sirius never gave much thought to Remus’ well-being.
- In Prisoner of Azkaban, we learn that Sirius literally used Remus as a weapon against Snape. That wasn’t a joke. If Remus had attacked Snape, he wouldn’t just have been expelled. He could have been executed. Sirius didn’t care.
- Sirius openly wished for a full moon when he was bored in Order of the Phoenix. Remus answered him dryly, because Sirius was being inconsiderate again.
- Sirius didn’t even trust Remus during the war.
He advised James to make Peter the Secret Keeper instead, specifically because he didn’t trust Remus. He says so himself in Book 3, and he even apologizes for it later (so no, it's not a headcanon that he didn't trust him, it's canon, it's his own words).
- Sirius left Remus nothing in his will.
Not a thing. Remus was poor, homeless, grieving, and Sirius — supposedly his best friend — didn’t leave him so much as a spare room in Grimmauld Place. That doesn’t scream “deep emotional connection” to me.
And the go-to argument?
"But Sirius became an Animagus to help Remus!"
So did James. So did Peter. They were teenagers, it was exciting, and for Sirius, it was probably more about doing whatever James was doing than any grand act of loyalty. Sure, Remus saw it as a huge act of friendship, but Remus was a lonely kid with no friends. Of course he idealized them. Even JKR says in his official bio that his biggest flaw was cutting his friends far too much slack because he was afraid of losing them.
Meanwhile, Tonks:
- Lost her powers and her Patronus changed because Remus tried to protect her by pushing her away.
- Fought for his love despite prejudice, danger, and family disapproval.
- Was nearly killed multiple times because she chose to be with Remus — Bellatrix targeted her because she married him. Guess what? Yes, Tonks actually DIED because she married Remus!
- Left her newborn baby behind to go fight beside him, because she 'couldn’t bear not knowing" (her words) if he was okay.
JKR’s own canon bio for Remus confirms: he had never fallen in love before Tonks. As for Sirius? He always got the women.
And don’t get me started on fandom reaching:
• “Remus was living with Sirius!” — So were a dozen other Order members. Including Tonks.
• “Remus looked at Sirius for 40 lines!” — Because Sirius was unstable, and Remus was bracing to intervene. Which he did. Like the responsible adult he was.
Remadora is not just canon. It’s about unconditional love in the face of prejudice. About two people who chose each other even when the world said they shouldn’t.
And for the record? I’m not even a hardcore Remadora shipper. I’ve always written Remus with my OC, before Remadora was even a thing. But saying "Wolfstar makes more sense" is not only ignoring canon. It’s ignoring character dynamics, consequences, and context.
Ship whoever you want. Really. But don’t pretend fanon is more "logical" than the canon story about love, sacrifice, and growth.
