June 19, 1982. Detroit native, Vincent Chin was beaten to death with baseball bat by Ronald Ebens & Michael Nitz because he was Asian. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 3 years probation because the judge said they were “good guys”. 6/19/82 Vincent and his friends were out celebrating his bachelor party. I am Vincent Chin. #neverforget On the night of June 19, 1982, a fight occurred at the Fancy Pants strip club on Woodward Avenue in Highland Park where Chin was having his bachelor party. The group was thrown out and after a heated exchange of words subsequently parted ways. Murderer Ronald Ebens allegedly instigated the incident by declaring, "It's because of you little motherfuckers that we're out of work!" referring to U.S. auto manufacturing jobs being lost to Japan, particularly referring to sales of Chrysler's rebadged Mitsubishis as captive imports, having mistaken the Chinese-American Chin as being Japanese. Chin taunted Ebens to keep fighting after they were all thrown out. Ebens and his stepson and fellow murderer Michael Nitz searched the neighborhood for 20 to 30 minutes and even paid another man $20 to help look for Chin, before finding him at a McDonald's restaurant. Chin tried to escape, but was held by Nitz in a bear hug while Ebens repeatedly bludgeoned Chin with a baseball bat until Chin's head cracked open. When rushed to Henry Ford Hospital, he was unconscious and died after four days in a coma on June 23, 1982. The murders Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 3 years probation. The case became a rallying point for the Asian American community, and Ebens and Nitz were put on trial for violating Chin's civil rights. Ebens was convicted of violating Chin's civil rights and was sentenced to 25 years of prison, but the conviction was overturned on appeal. Vincent Chin (1955 – 1982) was a Chinese American man who was murdered in a racially motivated hate crime in Detroit. Ronald Ebens, a Chrysler plant superintendent, and his stepson, Michael Nitz, fought with Chin outside a Detroit bar and reportedly shouted “It’s because of you little motherfuckers that we’re out of work.” The fact that Chin was a Chinese American was apparently of little consequence to Ebens and Nitz, who had connected Japan's recent global dominance in auto manufacturing to their own economic woes. The men attacked Chin with a baseball bat, delivering several blows to his head, hard enough that Chin fell into a coma, and four days later he died. The Asian American community expressed outrage when the two men were received lenient sentencing for the crime. The men pleaded to manslaughter, which was reduced from the original charge of second-degree murder, and they were ultimately sentenced to only three years of probation and fined $3,000.

Vincent Chin has been on my mind a lot lately. It's not just because he passed away 32 years ago Monday, or that I'm the same age now that he was when he was murdered. It's not just that we both have deep ties to the Detroit area, and that ever since I heard his story I wondered what he and his family thought and felt about race here. It's not that I was born just five years after he was killed, to a Chinese father and a white mother, the daughter of auto workers. It's not even that Detroit News columnist Neal Rubin wrote a revisionist editorial not two months before the anniversary of Chin's death this year.

Yesterday, June 23, marked the 32nd death anniversary of Chinese American, Vincent Chin who was beaten to death by Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz. I went to Vincent Chin's grave today, cleaned it, left fruit and incense at both his and his parents' headstones. I've been thinking a lot about you lately, brother. I'm the same age now as you were when you died, and as I grow and change, I think a lot about the impact Detroit has had on my life, and on yours. You didn't expect to be an icon for a generation of struggle, and you certainly didn't deserve to become an icon like this. I just want you to know that we remember. And to Lily Chin: thank you for your heart and your organizing. You are missed. I hope you see that we remember your son, and you, and everything you gave us. Rest in power. - CM
