It's Too Hot, so I'm doing some ice dyeing.

When you take a batch of newly ice dyed shirts out of the dryer, and your son falls in love with his and immediately asks you to screen print it with a glow-in-the-dark fistful of birds, you don’t say “no”.

I'm going to blame the cold weather for fall down into obsessive fiber crafting. Today I have a long sleeve shirt under snow and various purple and blue dyes. I also finished my merino silk blend and ran out of empty bobbins, so I need to swap the the plying wheel. I was tempted by a weaving class at the local store, but I'm out of practice. To do so, my friend returned my table loom that's lived at her apartment for years. She hadn't woven much on it, but she did return it warped. The purple weft is what I've done this morning.

Critical Yarns: Deanna

125 yards, about DK weight, 100% mohair

You know I had to do something special for Deanna.

The mohair is because of the goats, of course. I bought it from three older women who seemed to have a vague idea of running a booth and just gave me a garbage bag with a little bit more than four ounces of fiber and a teenaged relative that didn't quite know how to count money back. I don't know, it seemed appropriate for Deanna.

It was actually a lot easier to spin than I expected, and had an extremely lovely sheen pre-dyeing. I ice dyed it, because I'd snow dyed Chetney, and also Deanna had been 'on ice' for a couple hundred years. But I also liked the idea of dyeing her using something that had also been used to make a casserole, so I used a disposable blue apron pan for the ice dyeing. I also picked up this fry basket (mostly because it'd fit in the smaller blue apron pan).

I really liked using it - it allowed me to transport the yarn without jostling, so I could get rid of the melt easily. And it also looked kind of like the sun, so I got another sun motif in! I started out dyeing it pink and green, and then after considering whether Deanna would have been a sorority sister, added some gold ochre. But the thing is that ice dyeing is kind of like painting with water colors - stuff's going to bleed together and also the colors are going to lighten. So I accidentally ended up with a bunch of florescents (it'd looked like I painted it with highlighter colors). I did a little bit of glazing with some silver to desaturate and darken it - which, well, it desaturated it.

The gold doesn't come across very much in the end result, but I do like it!

Next up: Morrigan is actually done, I just need to post her. And FRIDA is about 1/3 spun up already. Then maybe Prism? Ame? We'll see.

DIY 2 Types of Ice Dyeing: With Bleach and Dye

For the DIY Bleach Ice Dye project you only need:

100% cotton fabric

bleach crystals

ice

For the regular DIY Ice Dye project you need:

fiber reactive dyes

fabric (see post)

textile detergent

soda ash fixer

ice

Out in Oregon my aunt showed me how to ice dye clothes!

The clothes are soaked in a solution of soda ash (sodium carbonate), ice is put on top, and then the dye is sprinkled onto the ice. As the ice melts the dye is pushed through the fabric resulting in a lovely variation and intensity of colors.

I loved watching the powdered dye change color once it hit the ice
