Today was cloudy, chilly, and rainy in #NewJersey. So here is a bright and sunny memory from 2015 when I visited the Gamble House in Pasadena, #California. It was designed by Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene of the architectural firm Greene and Greene. It was constructed 1908 - 1909 as a winter home for David B. Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. It is considered an Arts and Crafts masterpiece, featuring a strong traditional Japanese influence. Inside the house, it was built using multiple kinds of wood; teak, maple, oak, Port Orford cedar, and mahogany. In 1966, heirs Cecil and Louise Gamble turned the house over to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California School of Architecture. Today in history: @joshuatreenps in Riverside County and San Bernardino County, #California was declared a U.S. National Monument #OTD August 10, 1936 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It was redesignated a National Park on October 31, 1994. After boundary expansions in 1950 and 1994, today the park covers 1,235.37 square miles, slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island and is named for the Joshua trees which are native to the park. The park encompasses parts of two deserts: the higher Mojave Desert and lower Colorado #Desert. If you are wondering how the Joshua tree was named, according to legend, Mormon pioneers in the mid-nineteenth century considered the limbs of the Joshua trees to resemble the upstretched arms of Joshua leading them to the promised land. #tombstonetuesday The final resting place of Bette Davis (April 5, 1908 - October 6, 1989 at at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) in Los Angeles, #California. During the course of her career, Davis appeared in over 100 films and received two Oscars and three Emmy awards. A few of her major motion pictures include, "Dangerous" (1935), "Jezebel" (1938), "The Virgin Queen" (1955), "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" (1962) and "Hush, Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte" (1964). She was the co-founder of the Hollywood Canteen, and was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1962, Davis became the first person to secure 10 Academy Award nominations for acting. From my trip to San Francisco, #California last May. Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began January 5, 1933 and it opened May 27, 1937. The well-known engineering company of John Roebling and Sons, with factory sites in Roebling and Trenton, #NewJersey, oversaw the cable construction. The historical image shows Presidio soldiers at Battery East in 1936, while the bridge was being built. #tombstonetuesday The final resting place of William Boyd (June 5, 1895 - September 12, 1972) at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (#Glendale), in Glendale, #California. He is most fondly remembered for his role of Hopalong Cassidy in numerous Westerns movies and the popular 1950s TV series "Hopalong Cassidy." His started in Hollywood in 1918 and became a leading man during the silent film era, starring in a number of films.
