actually I've been thinking about Foul Murder lately right. So, in morrowind, the account of " Nerevar at Red Mountain " stated that Almalexia used poisoned candles to kill Nerevar, Seht used poisoned robes, and Vivec poisoned invocations when he tried to speak with Azura.
Now the Foul Murder drawing could be both literal AND allegorical. It would be very sure that they could've poisoned Nerevar, weakening him enough for Dagoth Ur under Red Mountain to beat him down enough to sort of push Nerevar out of their way to get to the heart when he was kicked down. But do remember: Each piece of Nerevar's body they removed had allegory to it.
Cutting off the face: This symbolizes the Tribunal's desire to obscure Nerevar's identity, making it difficult for him to return and reclaim his place. It also prevents him from being recognized by his people. And to come back as any race.
Cutting off the feet: This symbolizes preventing Nerevar from walking among his people or returning to his former life.
Stabbing from behind: This represents the nature of the betrayal and the lack of a direct confrontation. It also ensures that the Nerevarine will not know who struck the final blow. And also so the Nerevarine can be reincarnated as any gender.
And the only thing we know for certain us what it states in the thirty six lessons, " He was not born a god. His destiny did not lead him to this crime. He chose this path of his own free will. He stole the godhood and murdered the Hortator. Vivec wrote this. "
They make it purposefully vague HOW Nerevar died, though in both accounts they do say he succumbed to his wounds.
MY theory is that they used the poisoned ritual to weaken him to assure that they would get what they wanted, hoping that the poison and Dagoth Ur's fight would kill Nerevar. Though, after the fight, Nerevar was at the end of his line and they may have taken it upon themselves to enact the final blow.
Thankfully, the whole point is that we aren't supposed to know. I also believe that people OFTEN FORGET that Sotha Sil was the one who studied the tools and found they could obtain godhood through it, and my theory follows therefore that Seht was the one who had the idea to take the heart for themselves. Which is exactly why he carries so much guilt in the future.
