Matsukawa’s laughter sounded almost cold, echoing out of his car window and across the dim parking lot. You couldn’t see what was so funny. You’d just been left behind a third time this month at a date, without a clue what you were doing wrong.
“Well, are you gonna get in, or what?” Mattsun asked you, raising his eyebrows.
You grimaced. “Why are you laughing at me? This sucks ass. I’ll never get into a relationship at this point.”
“None of them can stand how blind you are,” he teased you. The obnoxious way he raised his eyebrows and half-shut his eyes did no favours to your mood, and you huffed, walking around to the passenger side.
“I dunno what you mean by blind. I think I have pretty good taste. I don’t know why none of them like me.”
He said something, and you opened the passenger door, leaning in. “What was that?”
“I said, ‘you’ll figure it out sooner or later.’”
You swung yourself into the seat, spreading your legs out comfortably after a night trying to make a polite impression and staring at the dashboard. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“See, I’m about to leave you too if you’re gonna keep being like this. Seriously?”
“Seriously what?”
“Those people were jealous of me.”
You guffawed. “What, of you and your fancy ‘80s car? Our ‘history’?”
“You always talk about me, you know.” He said it like he was revealing your deepest secrets. He always knew just how to get on your nerves. “Makki mentioned it to me.”
“I talked to Makki the most about you because you guys are best friends. You’re the only subject we had in common. Actually, now that I think about it, he and I shouldn’t have even bothered with a date.”
Matsukawa snorted.
“But the other two,” you complained, “had no reason to just storm out like that!”
“You did the same thing to the other two.”
“What makes you think that? They barely know who you are!”
“Yeah. And I’ll bet that before the date, they knew nothing about me.”
“You’re just self-obsessed. Stop acting like that.”
“Sure. But you know I’m right.”
Well… he wasn’t wrong. Self-important ass.
He turned off the engine, leaning back into the driver's seat. It was dark outside, and with the headlights now off, it was even darker. You could barely see the boxy outline of the front of the car ahead of you. The nearest lights were streetlights on the road.
“I guess you’re right.” You knew he had begun to smirk, so you corrected yourself. “Partially. I mean, it’s not like I talked about you the whole date. I just mentioned you.”
“To both of them?”
“Yeah. All I said was… things like… that you were the only person I trusted in my life right now. And…” You lifted your legs on top of the dash, crossing the ankles. Matsukawa made an offended noise. You laughed a bit. “You’re the only person I feel comfortable with. Of course, I mentioned that that could change and I was prepared for that, which was why I was looking for someone I could learn to trust.”
“It doesn’t have to change,” he said. “We could just stay like this.”
“Yeah, but, Mattsun, I wanna have a relationship. Kissing ‘n’ stuff. It’d be nice. But I know that you and I wouldn’t have that. So I guess I have to keep looking.”
“What, you’re gonna replace me?” he asked, sounding half-offended.
“No, I’ll just keep you as my side hoe. The side hoe is always more important, anyways.”
“Facts.”
“I know.”
You knew he was looking over at you with something on his mind. This wasn’t rare, and it got on your nerves how often he chose not to say it.
“Well? Spit it out.”
He cleared his throat. “Nothing.”
“It’s obviously something.”
“Alright.” You could hear a mischievous glee in his voice. “Alright. What if I’m the relationship and the side hoe?”
You glared over at him in confusion. “What, like, platonically?”
He laughed again. The same cold laughter.
“You’re not serious. Seriously, Y/N, are you gonna keep this up, or are you gonna let me be honest with you?”
“Honest? What the hell do you mean?”
He inhaled through his nose. “I know you said you trusted me the most, so I hope this doesn’t break anything. But holy hell, Y/N, I’m in love with you.”
You could have sworn your heart stopped. What?
Matsukawa?
Matsukawa Issei?
“Right,” you said sarcastically, trying not to let yourself believe it. Because if it was true — what then?
You had the sudden urge to be near him. Nearer to him.
“I’m not kidding. How many times am I going to have to say it? It’s always been you, Y/N. I’m sorry. I know you see me as a friend but it gets really damn frustrating keeping this a secret.”
What?
“You’re not kidding?” Your voice cracked glamorously. You winced, trying to find Matsukawa’s eyes with your own in the dark.
“No.”
“Really?”
His eyes locked with yours. Your chest tightened as you watched his lips creep up into a smirk. “Why?”
“Can I— can—” You froze, trying to remember how to speak. “Is— can I?”
“Kissing ‘n’ stuff, right?”
You nodded, hoping that he’d be able to see it.
“Alright,” he whispered, and you could feel him leaning towards you.
You’d kissed Matsukawa before. At a party. One of you was drunk, although you couldn’t remember which of you. It hadn’t been bad. You had forgotten about it.
It was the same, but a hundred times better.
He held your jaw securely, his full lips not shy to kiss you deeply. You could have sworn he was smiling as his long fingers found their way into your hair. Cocky bastard.
You hummed, your lips parting. And you were completely at his mercy.
Matsukawa Issei was the only person you trusted. You knew he acted arrogant and enigmatic sometimes, but he really was a simple guy with a personality that meshed with yours perfectly. You’d thought of him as handsome on many occasions, but had you allowed yourself to worry about it? No. Not until now.
Now, in his stupid old car he so prided himself in, in a dark parking lot after getting dumped for the third time in one month, nineteen feet from a convenience store, you realized just how incredibly attractive he was, and how fantastic of a kisser he was.
When he finally pulled back, you licked your lips several times, chest heaving, before you finally managed to get some words out. “Okay. Relationship and side hoe it is.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. I love you too. I think. I haven’t thought about it much but you’re a nice kisser. And you’re hot. You’re—”
“You don’t have to decide right now,” he said. “Sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you like that.”
“N— no, it was—” you stuttered. “It was okay. It was good. Very good.”
“I’ll give you time.”
You paused. “Okay. Thank you.”
Something had settled over the two of you.
Something was changing. And it wasn’t just because of the kiss. It was because every second more, you were realizing just how important he was to you. A thousand emotions were still exploding inside you. You didn’t know exactly where you were headed. Or how long the journey’d be.
Mattsun started the car.
You were headed into the unknown, but you’d figure it out. No matter where you’d end up, with Matsukawa by your side, the journey would be worth it.
