"Home is a notion that only nations of the homeless fully appreciate and only the uprooted comprehend." Wallace Stegner, Angle of Repose I moved into an apartment this past weekend, only to be told today that the apartment is now being repurposed and I have two weeks to move again. As I went to leave for work, I started to watch this sunrise but was redirected and watched as police escorted a group of people from their makeshift houses behind the apartment building. The ways in which we individually and socially place value on things and appearances, rather than on human beings makes my heart ache. Last year as a counselor for housing first, I experienced the way individuals that are homeless are continually pushed further and further. The strength so many people have to stay alive even when all odds are placed against them is baffling and inspiring. If I generalized the cause of homelessness, if would be the profound lack of connection. Many of us have privileges that allow us to never contemplate the experience of those living on the fringe, we keep a separation. But that doesn't make us any better. It keeps us all fragmented. Obama's speech and his call to action for human rights, was moving. I hope we can find ways to unite, to recognize our shared humanity, and move in a way that is inclusive, even in a time let by divisive and self-centered tactics.
