Holiday Traditions

Ioulaus had never celebrated Christmas.  He was from a time before Christ and knew the old gods, personally.  So he and Luke celebrated their major winter holiday on New Year’s Eve and Day.  It was in the wrong time of year, but Iolaus loved the fireworks, and of course, the dionysian libations.

Luke booked a B&B upstate and they drove through a couple hours of snow on the 30th to avoid traffic.  Everything was covered in white except the red dot of their rented suv.  He hadn’t been able to find pomegranates, so he purchased beautiful red apples fresh from the market and caramel for dipping.  Besides, going out for meals, or leaving their room at all, wasn’t part of the plan.  So they packed a one suitcase full of breads, sausages, cheeses, fresh and dried fruits, pastries, and chocolate.  The other contained just enough clothes to protect their case of champagne.  Toiletry kits were stuffed into a small carryon with two boxes of condoms and a variety of lube types and flavors.

The television played a NYE countdown program that provided cover for any noises they might have been making right up until the local fireworks started and Iolaus got completely distracted.  Luke laughed and opened another bottle of champagne.  They did manage to kiss at midnight, for luck, of course.

Drunken celebrants in several nearby rooms knocked and insisted that the couple join them in new year traditions like running around the house for travel, throwing furniture out a window to make room for good fortune, banging bread on the walls for prosperity, and wearing red for love.  Most of them were regular holiday visitors, so the owners were prepared with several old chairs.

Each thought that hearing the other laugh at the unexpected activities was the highlight of the evening.

New Years Day was spent in bed, watching the Rose Parade, relaxing, and rehydrating… maybe some making out too.  Iolaus snuck out in the afternoon while Luke napped and made a reservation for the next year, joining the regulars for tea and getting a list of items to bring next time.  He would be prepared and bring pomegranates for everyone.
