Summary:
"Frost lives in his hair. It lives in the corners of his eyes. It lives in the tender places—wrists, throat, the soft skin where armor cannot help him—and it gnaws there until everything feels both numb and burning, as if his body cannot decide whether to die or fight. He shifts his weight and the ice answers with betrayal. It rolls under him, slick as oiled stone, and his boots skid. Just ahead of him, Elenwë stumbles." ... Aikanáro helps save Itarillë from the fall that kills her mother.

Canonically, Maeglin was rather well loved and respected in Gondolin, but I don't think that that necessarily means that the fandom opinion of him being a lonely, depressed nolpa is wrong. Those aren't mutually exclusive things. Having dealt with bouts of depression myself, and a particularly bad one recently, I know that you can be surrounded by friends and family, know intellectually that they do love and care for you, and still wonder if they really do.
I propose this is what happened with Maeglin. It's not that he wasn't loved, but he didn't feel it, or he didn't think he deserved it. He was in a room full of people and still felt alone.
I imagine his relationships with his blood family were strained, at best.
Turgon killed his father (even though Aredhel begged him to show Eöl mercy; maybe she wouldn't have had she known the javelin was poisoned, but we don't know that either way) and threatened to kill Maeglin himself if he wanted to leave.
Idril was likely nice, and it actually makes sense as to why Maeglin would develop a crush on her (first female in his life who isn't his mom, pretty, spent a lot of time around each other), but the Silm claims she was the only one to know about his crush cause she poked around his brain or something (sounds fake but okay, Jirt, cause that seems like something other people would notice), so that probably hurt their relationship, assuming she spoke to him again. Fun fact: ignoring the problem only makes things worse. So rather than talking about it and getting over it, it only got worse. Honestly, that tracks for Valinorian Elves.
The only other person mentioned to have any sort of relationship with Maeglin is Salgant (which leads to the question of if Maeglin had any close friends - being praised and listened to doesn't mean you have real companions), and Pengolodh seems to have a real disdain for Salgant, describing him as a craven who "fawned upon Meglin". And I'd absolutely love to have a talk with Pengolodh about that, but that's not the point. Maeglin canonically has one real friend who, honestly, sounds more like a father or older brother figure than a friend - I've only ever heard of someone "fawning" over another in those contexts, never as friends. Maeglin's relationship with Salgant, while it was the closest he had, also seems like it was rather complicated with the whole friend-father figure-subject angle.
Also, is it Salgant or Talagand, cause it seems it was changed to Talagand later.
In conclusion, Maeglin, while he wasn't ostrisized, certainly didn't have many relationships or people who he could rely on. (And I feel like I just finished a middle school essay. 😅)
