A (false) color image I made of Messier 51, using the iTelescope network and the SalasJ editing program. Messier 51 is made up of two galaxies, M51a- the Whirlpool Galaxy and M51b also known as NGC 5195.
Did you know: all color images from telescopes are “false color” images? Telescopes only take pictures in black (no light) and white (light). Pictures are taken using different wavelength filters then each filter is assigned to a color- red, green or blue to create a color image.
