I just got out of what must have been the longest, most tedious and frustrating class, but something struck me: fanfiction fucked up how I read

And I mean that in a good way, as weird as it sounds. I don't mean fanfiction ruined novels and whatever, not at all. Actually, it hasn't influenced that at all. It's my reaction before even jumping to a reading that fanfiction fucked up

Well, out with it already: we were discussing trigger warnings. And on the 7 people in that class (professor included), I was the only one advocating the necessity of trigger warnings, and warnings in general. I was the only one saying that you can't really have too many warnings when jumping into something. The others were convinced that trigger warnings were tedious and used excessively now days, to a ridiculous extent. And I??? Don't get it??? And that's how fanfic has fucked with me.

When we publish fanfics, it's so heavily based on tagging and warnings. Tags are so important, mostly to be found, but they're also such a big part of the fic itself? A lot of the time, people reading fanfiction want something specific. Be it a fluff fix, some comfort after a long day, some angst to get the emotions high, smut for you know the reasons, or a specific au that you're just feeling that day. Fanfiction is a picky consumption; readers know what they want. So tags are necessary; they tell the story before hand. Or at least, they say what's in there. And I've grown so used to that. I'm used to that now and I really like having that option. With all the tags, I know what I'm getting into.

Confession : after reading a book, I make fake little ao3-like cards and stick them into the books. I put an approximate word count, i put the relationships, the characters, and some commentary tags. Because if someone picks something up from my shelf, I want them to be able to know what they're engaging with

So why did 6/7 people hate trigger warnings and tags? I don't know. I honestly have no idea but there's one thing I'm convinced of: they aren't consumers of fanfiction. Because I don't think anyone who consumes fanfiction would be so against trigger warnings and tags and warnings in general. Because even if you don't personally want to know what you're engaging with, you should know they're utility, no? And the thing with things like ao3's tagging system is that if you really want 0 spoilers, you don't have to read them. But people like me, people who don't want to be caught off guard by something that might not be **triggering** in a traditional sense but that still gets a reaction, those tags save a life. Or at least, you know what you're engaging with. You know what to expect. And I find that very useful.

TL;DR: fanfic fucked up how I consume books now because I want to know what I'm engaging with and I don't get how my entire class was shitting on them and I didn't like being singled out as "that one person who needs TW" like it's some weakness
