special thanks to the Rusty Quill Gaming podcast for saving my sanity while I spent over a week so sick I could barely move. and also distracting me during my IV treatment yesterday
Possibly(?) easy question if you're inclined: Beyond saline, are there some common IV nutrients/supplements a person might be likely to be given if they've been in a physically stressful situation for a while (where they haven't been able to take good care of themself/have lost some weight) and have now reached medical care but are going to need to be going into surgery in the near future?
We don't typically give nutrients IV. If a person can't use their mouth to eat we typically give them an NG tube into their stomach so we can give tube feed. If they can't use their whole digestive system, we might give TPN (total parenteral nutrition) via IV but TPN is somewhat dangerous and very expensive, so we'll exhaust a lot of options prior to this method.
What we might do is if the person has very low protein in their blood, we can give protein in the form of human albumin. It is important to have protein in the blood to both maintain blood pressure and to be able to use certain medications. Human albumin is a blood product, meaning it is derived from donated blood.
We may also give an IV solution called lactated ringers. This is kind of like an IV sports drink, and it replaces many lost electrolytes. If there are any particular electrolytes (like potassium or magnesium) that need replaced, those may also be given, either orally or in IV form.
Are diets for cats *burp* different in your dimension? Can you even drink *burp* coffee?

Note to self: do NOT drink coffee!! (I had to get my stomach flushed out… I think Rickitty is mad at me too..)
But um.. to answer your question, we can digest lactose and taste sweetness! That’s about it though..
my favorite way to drag around iv bags connected to my literal heart is to just drag them across the floor behind me like some abnegated shadow.
hey if anyone has had their pulse and blood pressure sharply rise during ferric derisomaltose (iron deficiency anemia) IV therapy, please reply, or message me, with what happened in detail and what conclusions were drawn, if any.
i went from a completely normal BP and pulse to super low then super high asymptomatically (i looked and felt fine then), and it did not stop rising until i had to be sent to the ER downstairs because the nurses who had seen everything had not seen this reaction to this specific iv therapy before. i was literally playing a game on my phone so relaxing that it regularly puts me to sleep (pocket camp) and sitting next to a calm rainy window in a recliner under a blanket. i was zen'd out. this should not have been remotely happening!
nor had the manufacturer heard of this, as their advice was unhelpfully about people experiencing the exact opposite of my case.
i was tested and tested, and nobody could figure it out. well, not beyond a big shrug, and pointing to a completely unrelated major health issue, which made no sense as it had no connection to my pulse or BP. i need any answers or suggestions, at all, from people with firsthand or secondhand (friends, family) experience
(also i welcome any kind thoughts, appeals, offerings, rituals, or prayers from any faith or belief as long as they are well-intentioned and kept private. i myself am agnostic and humanist and am grateful for anyone thinking of me as they try to solve this)

sorry if you've answered this already but what are infusions?
infusions are a form of IV therapy or treatment; my multiple sclerosis med (ocrevus) is administered this way every 6 months in addition to other meds :-)
