You're Taking Me Higher - Chapter 5: Something That I've Been Chasing

One slip and it all could spiral out of control. Now was not the time for either of them to be getting distracted.

The more days that passed, the more difficult it became. Avoiding Martin just made him think about him more. Thinking about him in ways nobody should be thinking about an employee that reports to them. He felt empty without being near Martin, seeing his smile, hearing his laugh. It was for the best, he reminded himself again and again, but it felt more hollow every time he did.

The guilt of using his powers to track Martin's movements started getting to him, though. It seemed, well, creepy, even though he was trying to avoid Martin instead of follow him. Jon made an effort to stop doing it intentionally, and rely more on his normal human perceptions instead. Which is why he was completely blindsided when Martin finally caught up to him.

He had just gotten in the elevator to bring some documents up to Elias's office. Martin seemed to be heading up to the library at the same time, carrying a stack of folders. Unable to find a means of escape that didn't make things more awkward, Jon gave him a curt nod of acknowledgment as he stepped into the elevator, and then stared at the floor.

Martin stood a polite distance away, but just barely. This was the closest he had been to Martin since their last dinner. His presence had Jon reeling, his heart racing. An unexpected surge of happiness rose up in his chest, and he found himself suppressing a smile. No matter how much he tried to stay away, Martin's mere proximity still had that effect on him.

It was only a few floors. He could handle this.
