So uhh, a few days ago, I met Johnny Depp. Twice. They're filming pirates of the Caribbean here in australia where I live so there was a really awesome opportunity where he took the time out of his filming days to do open meet and greets with anyone who showed up. He spent an hour with us and I got to hug him twice and got a kiss on the cheek. I got to tell him how excited I am to see him in Black Mass and he laughed and said "ohhh I don't know if you'll like that one". I should mention that for the entire time he spent with us, he was completely in character. He came and saw us just after filming so he was still in costume and he was staggering like a drunk and talking in jack's accent and making witty remarks left, right and center. At one point, he was standing in front of me and his security tried to get him to move along but he grabbed onto the fence between us and just said "NO! You can't make me!" And when his security tried to lift his hand from the fence, he just grabbed the fence with his other hand, and every time he swapped hands he was like "haha!! HAHA!! I'M CONFUSING HIM!! HAHA!!" It was hilarious and he did it right in front of me omg. And just ugh. His hugs are the BEST. I got a hug from him and a sneaky kiss on the cheek that I almost didn't notice, but his HUGSSSSS. We just wrapped our arms around each other and he squeezed me really tight and I rested my head on his shoulder and whispered thankyou to him and I think he said "that's alright, love" or something and ugh he's wonderful. The next day, the second time I met him, someone drew on my face accidentally when they reached past me to get Johnny to sign something, and Johnny thought he was the one who drew on my face (which was surprisingly probable due to him waving his hands everywhere) and he got so worried and was like "did I sign your face?? I'm sorry!" And I told him that someone else did it and he just sighed in relief, smiled and rested his hand on my collarbone and I NEARLY DIED. Then my best friend and I got him to sign our arms, and we told him we were going to get them tattooed and he looked shocked but was so careful writing his signature and he even lined his signature up with a previous tattoo that I've got. And then I got another hug from him! AND THEN WE SANG BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY TO HIM BECAUSE WE FELT THE FIRST VERSE WAS ACCURATE TO HOW WE WERE FEELING AFTER MEETING HIM, AND HE LOOKED UP AND WAVED AT US AND THEN STARTED GIGGLING WHEN HE REALISED WHAT WE WERE SINGING YAY AND WE ALSO SANG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HIM, EVEN THOUGH HIS BIRTHDAY IS TODAY AND HE JUSY STOOD ALL EMBARRASSED AND PULLED HIS BANDANA OVER HIS EYES GUYS JOHNNY DEPP IS WORTH HIS WEIGHT IN GOLD AND HE IS AN ADORABLE SWEET HUMAN BEING AND HE LOVES HIS FANS AND ANYONE WHO DISLIKES HIM IS SILLY. So happy birthday Johnny! Thanks for being awesome enough to meet your fans and get to know us, you're absolutely quintessentially beautiful in every sense of the word and I can only hope that I meet you again sometime. 💜

Just saw the post bout how Mortdecai didn't do well, and people are like what happened to Johnny Depp's career??.. but the answer is nothing's happened to it, because that's how it's always been.

Johnny has always picked interesting projects, projects that are unconventional and less than likely to be fawned over by the mainstream audience, but everyone's forgotten about this because of Disney, and Tim Burton, and the magic of franchise films. 

Tim Burton plucked Johnny from the masses for the first time back in 1990 for Edward Scissorhands, and people ate it up because it was different. It was fairy-tale like, and a little dark, and it had quirky characters etc., but it wasn't 'til 3-4 years later that he chose him again for Ed Wood. So what was Johnny doing in between? You probably couldn't name the films he made during those years, and I'm not saying that like some snobby elitist fan, but because their pretty outlandish and indie elements have more often than not have gone straight over your head unless you were truly compelled by them; again no offense inferred here. 

What I'm trying to say is that before his union with franchise film making, Johnny Depp was a pretty casual actor. I mean he was good, he was damn good at what he did - he still is - but he was definitely under the radar.

If you asked people about his early career, they'd probably say 21 Jump Street, Nightmare on Elm Street, maybe CryBaby, because those roles were/are iconic. Shit, they're making 21 Jump Street movies right now so you get where I'm coming from. But in the 90's he was more noted on his image, mostly due to his relationships with Kate Moss, Sherilynn Fenn, and Winona Ryder (everyone remembers that). He was the shy, brooding, smoker type with a pretty face that only truly bloomed when infront of a film camera; it wasn't until 2003 when Disney snatched him up for POTC that people finally started to focus more of his talent and less on his aesthetic, and the doors started to open for him.

From then he managed 5 or so independent films, some of which did fantastically in comparison, before resigning to his fate in 2005; a Burton/Disney ping-pong match for the remainder of his career. And although Johnny totally enjoys being the pawn among the players, and I 100% support that 'cause he's making everyone else happy by doing so, it seems he's become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

For those unaware of the phrase:

A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior.

By returning to these roles, people have become accustomed to Jack Sparrow, and Burton's creative stylings, and in turn been conditioned to perceive those roles as familiar, and exciting, and therefore successful; and in no way am I saying they aren't because they are and he's phenomenal at what he does. But, seeing Johnny in anything outside of those two positions is then automatically deigned foreign and, due to said conditioning, won't be half as good or successful. Thus concluding why Mortdecai didn't do as well as some, and disproving the supposed downfall of his career as complete bollocks.

If you don't believe me, go back and compare his more recent non-Disney/Burton films with that of Alice In Wonderland, Lone Ranger, hell, even Dark Shadows. 

And this is where I stop before I end up creating a conspiracy theory.. but if you read this, you get what I mean right?
