Dawson’s Creek: Joey Potter - Type 6w5
Joey is skeptical, snarky, insecure and helpful. Joey has always wanted to have stability in her life and make it on her own because she has had a tough upbringing.
At her best, Joey becomes calmer and feels less worried at the beginning of her relationship with Pacey. Joey is also a kind and loyal friend in her relationships.
At her worst, Joey can be very cruel to outsiders as we see in her interactions with Jen. She tries to ice Jen out because she is jealous of her relationship with Dawson.
Joey has a strong sense of loyalty and feels like she needs to stand by her family, despite the town’s perception of her father. When her father comes back, she is happy to have him back but is always worried that he was going to go back into his old ways. Dawson confirms these suspicions and strongly encourages her to cooperate with the police and turn in her father. Joey has a strong reaction against this as she feels like she has done the wrong thing by betraying her father, despite him breaking the law. This is the catalyst for her breakup with Dawson as she feels like she can never forgive him for making her be disloyal.
Joey has always felt like she has had to be responsible as her life has been a bit tumultuous. As a result, Joey tries her best to get the best grades in high school so she can get a scholarship and make something of herself. i believe her main driving force behind this is the fact that she wants to be independently successful so she doesn’t have to rely on anyone for anything (which can happen to unhealthy 6s). However, as the series progresses, she realises that she can let people in and let them help her.
For much of the series, Joey has contradicting feelings and is very indecisive in her relationships. In particular, she spends the beginning of the series being obsessed with Dawson, yet when they begin their relationship she has so many doubts and insecurities about it. Then, she develops feelings for Pacey but feels like she shouldn’t act on them for fear of Dawson’s reaction and for fear of the unknown. As the series ends, she begins to have a clearer idea of what she wants and ends up with Pacey.
Joey shows her wing 5 as she is more reserved and introverted than a 6w7.
Tri-type: 6w5 - 1w2 - 3w4
Some quotes to describe Joey’s motivations
“In many ways, I feel like you’ve partially invented me, Dawson. And that scares me so much.”
“I’ve always had this tendency to assume that change, when it happens, can only be for the worse. You know? And lately, I kinda feel like that’s not true, like whatever waiting for me out there may not be that bad. And even if it is, then not knowing about it might actually be the good part.”
“Pacey, I love you. You know that. And it’s very real. It’s so real that it’s kept me moving, mostly running from it, never ready for it.”
“I just wish I were more like you. You feel things, you act on them. Pacey’s like that, too. Fearless.”
“How dysfunctional do you think I am?”
“Well, you know, if I blow off the paper, then I’ll probably fail the class, and if I fail the class, well, that could be the beginning of a long and tragic downward spiral that dooms me to wait the tables of Capeside’s greasy spoons for eternity, so… count me in.”
