The pilot of 1990's The Flash premiered on September 20, 1990. The character of Iris West (Paula Marshall) didn't crossover to the ongoing series. The TV movie showed the origins of Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) becoming the Flash. Shipp would also cameo as the Flash in Arrow (2018), Supergirl (2018), and the Flash (2014 - 2023). Echoes and flare.

So I've been watching the old Flash TV show. The one that came out in 1990.

Some thoughts:

I cannot believe more AU fic does not reference Jay Allen, Barry's older brother, a police officer tragically murdered in the first episode.

These villains are extra. I figured the Trickster would be a wacky outlier. Instead, the pilot shows a pre-Flash Central City dealing with a motorcycle gang called the Dark Riders with a secret lair lead by a dramatically scarred man named Pike who deals with people trying to quit by  * talking about how Genghis Khan handled disloyalty,  * tying them to a motorcycle,  * adding a bomb, and then  * starting up the motorcycle and sending it off to explode. (I have the sneaking suspicion that tv!Axel Walker is really sad he wasn’t old enough to effectively break the law in the early ‘90s.)

There are passing resemblances between Tina McGee and Caitlin Snow. I mean, there's the style, the restraint, the working for STAR Labs, the medical training, the objection to superheroics, the partner who died in a STAR Labs experiment...

First victim of Barry's super-speed is a coffee cup. I am curious to see if it will be a recurring motif in the original series.

Incumbent Democrat Chellie Pingree of Maine is facing Republican challenger Jay Allen, for her 1st District seat in a couple of weeks. On Tuesday night, the two faced off in a debate. Many issues were covered in the debate: public health, where Allen blamed nursing homes for not following the “rules” of public health, while also trying to say that mandating mask wearing was not a good public health policy. Rep. Pingree mentioned that wearing a mask was, at the very least, “a benevolent act for everyone else,” and wondered aloud why anyone would refuse to wear one anyway. She also explained that the concept of “low risk,” during these times is relative and therefore mask wearing is very important for everyone to participate in.

This was the tenor of the First Congressional District Debate. Oh, Jay Allen also wore a tie with an American flag pattern all over it, talked about creating a social security sliding scale that would get rid of some people’s social security benefits, and was not able to give an actual replacement solution to getting rid of the Affordable Care Act. Super classy stuff. But this was all overshadowed when race and law enforcement’s relationship to race came up.

Everyone took a slight pause there, trying to compute the confusing racist man with the American flag tie. Later on Allen called into question the science behind climate change. Just more of the Grand Old Party’s stale greatest hits.
