For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. —Proverbs 2:6 (NKJV) It's that traditional time of year—September—when kids used to start school. (So says a girl raised in the 80s...) School began in July for our house this year, so we've had weeks of books and backpacks littering the entryway at home. We're shuttling kids to practices and struggling to help with math homework. (So says the writer-gal mom who never "got" math...) We're washing clothes like mad. Making PB&J lunches for an army, it seems. And all the while, in the prep-work and prayer that the school year goes well, it's easy to forget the purpose of sending out future generations to classrooms -- to grow in wisdom and stature. Here's what I love about this verse. If you go back a few lines, we find the key to this whole "wisdom" thing. In verse 2: "...turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding." Just sitting in class isn't enough. Just flipping through pages in a Bible or reading a devotion here or there, or giving Him a God-nod on Sunday mornings isn't enough to grow in wisdom and understanding. We can hear His Word as plainly as hearing a teacher speak in the classroom -- but it's our job to turn our ear to hear, and our heart to apply. I love photo because of the potential it holds. Potential for our prayer journals and study Bibles to be worn in all the right places. We should have a stack of them for our #storyroads with God, to continually grow in wisdom and understanding, because we've made the choice to turn our ear and open our heart every day of the week. Yep... we're officially in school. All of us. If we're walking with Him, we should be learning whether we were a child of the 80s or we're in our 80s. So in this #WednesdayWisdom, here's to the school-goers, the ear-turners, the heart-openers, and the wisdom-chasers! But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. —Luke 10:33 (NIV) I love, love this parable. Yes, because of the story we all know (the Good Samaritan) -- but also because of what came first... the #storyroad. The Good Samaritan was already on a JOURNEY somewhere. The verse says: "...a Samaritan, AS HE TRAVELED..." Think about that. This man of compassion was already on a journey somewhere. Maybe he was late to the office. Or had a meeting that couldn't be missed and was speeding along to get there. Or, maybe he was just wrapped up in his own troubles and might not have noticed someone struggling by the road... It's not just the stopping, the helping, or the compassion that gets me in this verse... it's that the Good Samaritan was already on a journey with a destination in mind, and he did a quick-pivot in his own plans with no questions asked. I LOVE that!!!! How often do we stop to the "unscheduled" in our lives? How willing are we to quick-pivot in the destinations we had in mind, to instead go all-in on something God wants to use us for -- and maybe change our story road forever? See the photo? This gal is ready for the quick-pivot diversion. She's got a stuffed pack on her back... she's tucked her hair in a pony for the job ahead... and she's looking out, ready to charge into the next steps -- whatever they might be. We, too, can do that this mid-week, or in this new month of August. Wednesdays aren't meant to be the hump in a long, passionless slog through a work week. They're for strapping on a pack, tying the hair up, and going all-in to abandon our wants AS WE TRAVEL. Because we might miss the appointment we originally had scheduled, but trust that God's got something better in mind... Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. —2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) The book that has most shaped me (outside of the Bible), is Elie Wiesel's NIGHT. It's become a classic in my life -- the easy definition meaning: it continues to create a sense of the new out of what's old. Every time I open the cover, thumb through the pages, absorb the heartbreaking beauty of the words, I'm made new again. That doesn't mean finding, or creating, or reshaping something into a classic is at all easy -- just that the outcome is remarkably different from the who and what and how of a starting point. The definition of a classic in our faith walk? SANCTIFICATION. It's the setting apart of who we once were, now that we've surrendered all to Jesus. The making us holy. Refining by fire. Changing and molding and renewing, time over time. It's the Christ-follower's sense of new out of the old. And because we're talking truth here... let's be real that it's not at all easy. The process has us facing some pretty hard truths. Confronting doubts. And maybe, just maybe, finding that valley-walking takes us closer to Him than we ever imagined possible. The end point (and points along our Jesus-chasing journey) is remarkably different when we consider the who, and what, and how we've changed from where we started out and placed our trust in Him. That's the beauty of what it means to RENEW. To be Renewed.
