SICARIO / 2015

Every few years a film will come along that imprints itself on your memory. From the outset of ‘Sicario’ one feels as if they are being led into a world of smoke and mirrors, shifting agendas and unclear motives. The feat that the combination of the writing of Talyor Sheridan (who since has written ‘Hell and High Water’ and more recently ‘Wind River’) and the directorship of Denis Villeneuve has achieved in encapsulating grit, fear and unnerving tension throughout in crafting an incredible atmosphere is stunning. Not since a crime thriller such as ‘No Country For Old Men’ (2007) has so much grit, ferocity and such ambiguity been so well portrayed. 

Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is an FBI Agent on the border dealing with the drug cartels and their kidnapping operations close to the borders of Phoenix. Mounting pressure and a spike in activity lead Kate being recruited into a new team with some shadier and more casual CIA-types, being Matt Graver (Josh Brolin). The main target being members of the Sinaloa Cartel, Fausto Alacorn and his family members, Manuel and Geurmo. 

On the first flight out, we meet with Alejandro (Benicio del Toro) who asks if Kate has “ever been to Juarez”, in Mexico, unbeknownst to Kate, who thought it was a interstate journey. Alejandro states that he is a ‘specialist’ on the drug cartels, after further questioning by Kate he responds “You’re asking how a clock is made, just focus on watching the time.” This response is an indication for the rest of the film; do not ask questions, simply be. From this we identify with Kate that we know as little as she does for the entirety of the film. The new team comprises of members that are a mix of marines, the CIA and Colombian ‘consultants’, who we slowly realise are not doing things by the book, simultaneously with Kate. We are warned again from Alejandro, “Nothing will make sense to your American ears, you will doubt everything we do. But in the end, you will understand.” Del Toro somewhat steals the limelight from Brolin and Blunt in a fine return to form as an outsider within a film it feels was written for him. 

The films most impressive scene begins with a downright evil bass tone (the score by Jóhann Jóhannsson) in a long, drawn out orchestral theme, visually accompanied by helicopters flying into Mexico as the team cross the border. This sweeping shot is a testament to the cinematography of Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption, No Country for Old Men). We are then set on course in a convoy to extract Guermo, one of the leading members of the cartel. What follows is a brutally bungled attempt of cartels members retrieving one of their leaders from the team, which is nothing short of striking in its execution and content. From this event, Kate realises just how out of her depth she is. 

The rise in tension and suspense is masterful as we feel the characters are constantly in environments that are potentially hostile. The extremely complex situation of the cartels, their drug running capabilities and the extent that the American government will go to in halting this is the main crux of the film. 

For me, ‘Sicario’ has the same gritty content as the crime thrillers of the 90′s, comparable to ‘Heat’ and ‘Se7en’ and if it was released at this time, believe it would be held in the same esteem. In my opinion it deserves to be mentioned when movie lovers are discussing great crime thrillers, being an instant classic that is completely re-watchable. ‘Sicario’ has set a magnificent standard for getting the combination of writing, directing, casting and the accompanying music score perfected. It has left me wanting much, much more of the Sicario universe that has been created.

      Why did people complain about Scarlett Johansson white washing Motoko from Ghost in The Shell when the character she's portraying isn't any race at all?Motoko is a machine/cyborg and can have any appearance she wishes. (In the original movie IN THE END her body is that of an appearance of a child...)

 Also, the reason why they chose Scarlet for the role is because she is a notable actress and hardly anyone outside the anime community has even heard of Ghost in the Shell before the movie was announced! Her name alone is what would make people go into theatres! Star Wars is alot different hiring less notable actors since Star Wars is a name that most people recognize.

Johansson Family Facts

Tor was known as one of mewni’s strongest upcoming warriors alongside Hody until Astro appeared.

All the Johansson siblings seem to have an unexplainable sense of cohesiveness in battle. Even Breeze can team up flawlessly with her brothers when it’s called for.

While not as famous as his brothers or sister as a warrior, Gus’ aim with a bow is quite well known. He’s won numerous archery contest throughout mewni.

Twister was the first friend Hody made on the surface. His is the only weapon made from the Waterfolk kingdom as a gift from his friend.

While they aren’t incredibly close, Breeze has a much closer relationship to Gus than she does with the rest of her brothers due to him being the ‘runt’ before she was born. He never bullied her and tends to look the other way when she does something that would piss Tor off.

Gale runs a food blog where he tracks down rare foods and ingredients in mewni. He’s surprisingly popular. He’s also a skilled chef, though he can never quite beat Moon in the annual mewni cook off.

Queen Flutter Johansson is known to be a rather silent and dainty figure. Though on the battlefield she’s a notoriously violent and feared figure.

Gus is actually fairly popular with the the girls in his kingdom, but due to his shy nature he tends to avoid the dating scene.

Queen Flutter was a former members of the assassin’s guild.

Breeze Johannsson Facts

1. Breeze was considered the runt of the litter being the smallest and youngest of five. Originally she tried using her family style of brute force and savagery in battle. It wasn’t until training with Queen Margo she began taking advantage of her speed and agility. Now she is considered the strongest of all the Johannsson heirs.

2. Breeze’s magical ability is known as “Impact”. She can increase the impact force of her attacks, so even a small poke could prove devastating to an opponent. Combined with her speed and tactics, she’s considered the “Glass Canon” of the group. While her durability is lacking, most can never land a hit on her anyway.

3. While Breeze doesn’t share the same hatred of monsters as her family does, she holds a strong dislike for the septarians. After losing her knight, an uncle, and two cousins to septarian rebels, she’s reluctant to trust any of them. She only attempted to help Amber get into the royal court on Astro’s requests.

4. Breeze was originally going to graduate as a knight alongside Astro, but the stress of losing her knight prior threw her off. She passed easily the following year, and was quickly promoted to second in command.

5. Breeze’s riding animal is a giant eagle named Peck. She hatched her from an egg as a child. Her brothers were all given eggs to hatch as well, but they’re were not lucky enough to survive the rather brutish routine the Johannsson’s go through.

6. Breeze is by far the most intelligent of her siblings. So much so that her parents are actually considering passing her brothers up and giving her the throne. Breeze doesn’t really want the crown, but looking at her brothers makes her think she has little choice.

7. Breeze tends to act very motherly towards Fum. She sees him like a younger brother. Slick is more of an annoyance to keep in check. She respects Astro, but knows he can be very reckless. She is usually the one to call him back and reel him in when he gets too into his job.

8. Breeze got her nickname “The Impact” when she broke down the reinforced gate of a rebel stronghold with a single punch. They soon surrendered afterwards, as their strategy had banked on waiting the guard out.

9. She is the most feared of the Four Calamities because of her demeanor and power. She’s gives one warning, and only one. On the rare occasions she does have to fight seriously, there is rarely anything left of her opponents.

10. She is regarded as the best student of Queen Margo, even above Astro. She’s never been the most popular among the prince and princesses of mewni, but she is by far one of the most respected.

Four Calamities Facts

1. Astro, Breeze, Fum and Slick were officially dubbed the “Four Calamities” after just the four of them took on and destroyed a rebel stronghold. It was so thoroughly crushed that everyone originally assumed the base was hit by a series of natural disasters.

2. Though they all serve in the Queensguard, the Calamities rarely ever work together on the same missions. On the rare occasions when all Four Calamities are sent to battle, it’s usually an extreme emergency.

3. Slick is the only member of the Calamities who has no magical ability whatsoever. Though few people know this, so it makes him ideal for sneaking past strongholds who try to detect them by magic.

4. Though Astro is the leader, he usually counts on Breeze for strategy and maneuvers in battle. It’s said she may be the greatest tactician in mewni, and her strategies have saved countless lives.

5. There was a time when Hody Kelpbottom was being considered as a fifth Calamity by the general public. After Astro thrashed him in a tournament the rumors were quickly dispelled.

6. The Calamities have never lost a single battle as a group. Even though they’re used to working individually, their teamwork is flawless.

7. Some consider Amber to be an unofficial fifth Calamitiy. They nicknamed her “The Scorch”. Fum is excited at the prospect, while Breeze is far from enthusiastic. Slick is indifferent, but claims she’s “Not quite there yet”.

I get the feeling Astro and Breeze’s relationship with Sarasim the Brave was similar to Ed and Alphonse’s relationship to Izumi Curtis (please tell me you get the reference). Also how would they react to knowing she faked her death?

So I’ve never watched FMA all the way through, just bits and pieces, but I’m guessing Izumi is their mentor/mother figure. (The one who met her husband when she dropped the bear, which is hilarious btw)

And if so, yeah, that’s a good way to describe it. I’d say it’s more big sister than mother figure though. Sarasim was one of the first to see potential in Breeze even though everyone else thought of her as just the runt of her family, and she also had a knack for talking sense into Astro when he got too crazy. (Like Breeze does now)

Breeze would probably be so relieved she just wouldn’t care, and Astro would be glad but also angry since he felt a lot of guilt over her death.

Also feel I should just point out she’s the @thepaladincosplays character so this is just based off of what I’ve seen from his stories.
